Misunderstanding at the party

Misunderstanding at the party

On the night of the graduation party, the auditorium was brightly lit. Lin Weixi, wearing a light blue dress, stood by the curtain backstage, her palms slightly sweaty. She looked at herself in the mirror, who was wearing light makeup, and could hardly recognize this slightly mature reflection.

"Wei Xi, it's our class's turn!" Shen Siyu ran over with her skirt lifted up, her cheeks flushed with excitement.

Lin Weixi took a deep breath and followed the team to the side of the stage. From her angle, she could clearly see the first three rows of seats below the stage. Chen Wang sat in the middle, wearing a fitted white shirt, looking down at his phone.

The music started, and she followed her classmates onto the stage. The moment the spotlight shone, she instinctively looked in that direction. Chen Wang looked up, his eyes meeting hers. At that moment, time seemed to slow down.

The performance went smoothly until the last note fell. As the applause roared, Lin Weixi saw a girl in a pink dress quickly walk towards Chen Wang and patted his shoulder affectionately. Chen Wang smiled, stood up, and followed the girl out of his seat.

That smile was the most brilliant that Lin Weixi had never seen before.

The backstage atmosphere suddenly erupted. "Did you see that? Xu Ying from Class 3 actually came to see Chen Wang!" "When did they become so familiar with each other?"

Lin Weixi quietly retreated to the corner, her fingers unconsciously twisting the hem of her skirt. She recognized that girl—the champion of the campus singing competition, always as bright and dazzling as a butterfly.

Throughout the entire evening, her eyes couldn't help but follow those two people. Xu Ying would occasionally lean over to Chen Wang's ear to speak, and Chen Wang would always have a gentle smile on his face. For a moment, Lin Weixi even felt as if their eyes seemed to cross the crowd and briefly meet for a second.

"Wei Xi, let's take a photo!" Chen Siyu pulled her towards the stage.

When passing the rest area, Lin Weixi saw Xu Ying stuffing a note into Chen Wang's hand. The action was so natural, as if it had been repeated countless times.

The evening drew to a close, and the principal began handing out graduation certificates. When Chen Wang's name was called, the audience erupted in applause. He walked onto the stage, accepted the certificate, and his gaze swept across the audience, lingering for a moment in one direction.

Lin Weixi followed his line of sight and saw Xu Ying holding up her phone to take a photo. At that moment, she suddenly understood something.

"So that's how it is..." She whispered to herself, a bitter smile appearing at the corner of her mouth.

During the final group dance, Lin Weixi quietly retreated to a corner of the auditorium. She looked at the center of the dance floor, where Chen Wang and Xu Ying were swaying gently to the music. Their figures looked particularly well-matched under the rotating colored lights.

"Don't you want to go dancing?" Zhou Xu appeared beside her at some point.

She shook her head, her eyes still fixed in that direction.

"Xu Ying is Chen Wang's cousin," Zhou Xu suddenly said, "She came back from university today just to attend the graduation party."

Lin Weixi was stunned. This turn of events caught her off guard.

"They grew up together and had a very close relationship." Zhou Xu smiled, "But many people misunderstood their relationship."

The music switched to a slow tempo, and people on the dance floor were in pairs. Lin Weixi saw Chen Wang politely reject the invitations of several girls and walked towards the beverage area alone.

Courage suddenly surged in her heart. She adjusted the hem of her skirt and walked in that direction. However, just when she was only a few steps away from him, Xu Ying appeared again, holding Chen Wang's arm and walking towards the photo area.

"Brother, Mom and Dad asked us to take more pictures!"

This name made Lin Weixi stop in her tracks. It turned out that she was really her cousin.

She stood there, watching the brother and sister interact naturally in front of the camera. Chen Wang's occasional doting smile was a look of ease she had never seen before.

The whistle signaled the end of the party, and the crowd began to surge toward the door. Lin Weixi stood there, watching Chen Wang surrounded by his classmates, taking photos, getting autographs, saying goodbye...

She didn't go forward in the end.

When walking out of the auditorium, the early summer evening breeze with the fragrance of flowers blew on her face. Lin Weixi looked up at the starry sky and suddenly felt that the moonlight tonight was particularly gentle.

"Are you waiting for someone?" Chen Wang's voice came from behind.

She turned and saw him standing alone on the steps, his diploma tucked casually under his arm.

"No," she whispered, "just looking at the stars."

They walked side by side on the path back to the dormitory, neither of them speaking. As they passed the basketball court, Chen Wang suddenly asked, "What are your plans after graduation?"

"Maybe I'll go to University B to study media." She answered honestly.

"Excellent choice," he nodded. "Your talent for photography shouldn't go to waste."

The words made her heart skip a beat.

When they arrived at the girls' dormitory, Chen Wang took out a small box from his backpack: "Graduation gift."

Lin Weixi took it in surprise, opened it and found it was an exquisite lens-shaped brooch.

"I hope you will always keep your eyes open to discover beauty." He smiled, turned and walked into the night.

That night, Lin Weixi drew a small stage in her diary, with two little people holding hands on the stage. She wrote next to it:

"I didn't realize misunderstandings could be so beautiful. It almost made me give up, but it also made me rediscover him. Perhaps youth is like this, always between misunderstanding and understanding, allowing us to slowly understand each other."

She picked up the brooch and pinned it on the front page of her diary. The silver lens shone faintly under the desk lamp, just like the starlight tonight.

This night, because of a beautiful misunderstanding, some things became clearer.
