September, new deskmate

September, new deskmate

The September sunshine, still carrying the lingering heat of summer, shines brightly through the classroom window, casting mottled light and shadows on the brand new textbook covers.

The air is filled with the smell of ink from new books, as well as a faint sense of tension and anticipation for the new semester.

Lin Weixi sat in the fourth row by the window, her fingers unconsciously scratching the edge of the English book she had just received. The classroom was noisy, and the students gathered in groups of three or four, excitedly chatting about their summer vacation experiences.

Her eyes always drifted involuntarily and quietly towards the classroom door.

My heart is beating a little fast, like a restless little rabbit in my arms.

The classroom instantly quieted down as the homeroom teacher walked in with the roster. After the routine opening speech, the most important step came: assigning seats.

"I'll read out the seating arrangement. Everyone, listen carefully and take your seats according to your numbers."

Lin Weixi held her breath.

As names were called out one by one, the students stood up, moving their desks and chairs with a rasping sound as they found their new seats. She pricked up her ears, afraid of missing her own name, and even more afraid of missing the name she had silently recited so many times in her mind.

"Lin Weixi."

She responded immediately, but in a low voice.

The head teacher pushed up his glasses, his eyes moving across the roster. After a pause, he read out the next name: "Chen Wang. You sit together."

Buzz——

Lin Weixi felt as if something had gently hit her head.

It's really him.

Chen Wang.

Chen Wang, the one who spoke on behalf of the freshmen on the first day of school because of his outstanding academic performance. Chen Wang, the one who always attracted countless attention on the basketball court. Chen Wang, the one whose name was often on the lips of the girls, discussed with a hint of shyness and envy.

She watched the tall figure stand up from the back of the classroom, easily pick up his schoolbag, and walk towards the empty seat next to her.

Her hands subconsciously clenched the hem of her school uniform.

It's over. She wailed in her heart. How could it be him?

Chen Wang walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat down with a swift movement. A faint scent, like laundry detergent mixed with sunlight, gently drifted over.

He stuffed his schoolbag into the desk, turned his head to look at her, and the corners of his mouth seemed to curl up as a greeting.

Lin Weixi quickly lowered her head, pretending to organize the books in front of her, her heart beating like a drum. She could feel the warmth and presence of another person coming from the seat next to her, so clearly that she could hardly think normally.

The head teacher continued to read out names, but Lin Weixi could no longer hear clearly. All her senses seemed to be occupied by the new deskmate next to her.

She glanced at him secretly out of the corner of her eye.

He wore the same blue and white school uniform as the other boys, but he looked exceptionally tall and clean. His dark hair had grown a bit long, slightly covering his eyebrows. He was looking at the podium, his profile clear and his jaw set in a serious curve.

It seems...it's even better looking than when I saw it from a distance. This thought popped up in Lin Weixi's mind, and she was startled by herself, her face getting a little hot.

"Okay, this is how the seats are arranged for now. I hope everyone will help each other and make progress together in the new semester." The head teacher finished his words.

The classroom was filled with the sounds of chattering and moving tables and chairs again.

Lin Weixi was frozen in place, not daring to move, even breathing lightly. The textbooks in front of her were already arranged as neatly as possible.

"Hello." A voice came from the side, clear, with a little hoarseness unique to teenagers.

Lin Weixi raised her head suddenly and met Chen Wang's gaze. His eyes were bright, like a clear spring.

"Classmate, is there something wrong?" She was so nervous that she almost bit her tongue.

Chen Wang seemed to find her reaction a little funny. The corners of his mouth curled up again and he pointed at the corner of her desk: "Can you lend me your math book? I think I got the wrong version."

"Ah? Oh! Okay, okay!" Lin Weixi hurriedly picked up the brand new math book, and when she handed it over, her fingertips accidentally touched his.

It was very light and fast, like being passed by a weak electric current.

She quickly retracted her hand, feeling a burning sensation from her fingertips to her ears.

Chen Wang seemed not to notice. He said thank you and lowered his head to flip through the pages of the book.

Lin Weixi hid her hand under the table and used her other hand to tightly hold the fingers that had just been touched. Her heart was in a mess, but she also felt a little inexplicable and subtle joy.

The sunlight outside the window became stronger, and the cicadas were chirping tirelessly.

This September, when my senior year of high school began, things suddenly became different because of my new deskmate.

Lin Weixi thought, this is destined to be a semester that will be difficult to calm down.

She secretly took out a pencil from her pencil case and lightly drew a tiny star mark in the corner of the title page of the new book.

No one knows what this means.

Only she herself knew that this star was lit up because of the person sitting next to her.
