Chapter Fifty-Seven: The Fictitious King Gan

Song Yunming stayed close to Chen Zhennan, his eyes fixed on the assassins around them.

"Brother-in-law, everyone says you are the God of War of the Martial Kingdom. Let me see what you're capable of today."

Chen Zhennan chuckled, a hint of smugness appearing on his face.

"Alright, brother-in-law will show you today that only those who can fight and win deserve to be called war gods."

The assassins were enraged to see the two chatting away, taking turns saying a few words and completely ignoring them.

"Kill them both!"

Chen Zhennan sneered: "Hmph, like an ant trying to shake a tree, overestimating your own strength."

Having said that, Chen Zhennan moved like lightning, suddenly rushing towards an assassin. With lightning speed, he snatched the assassin's curved knife, and with a backhand swing, a flash of cold light appeared, and the assassin's hand was cleanly severed, blood gushing out.

Seeing this, the other assassins shouted to bolster their courage and then swarmed forward.

Chen Zhennan showed no fear, wielding his curved blade with impenetrable speed, like a dragon emerging from the sea. He would sometimes dodge to the side, sometimes counterattack with his blade, every move precise and displaying the demeanor of a master.

Song Yunming was not idle either. Although his martial arts skills were not as good as Chen Zhennan's, he used all his strength to snatch a curved knife and assist Chen Zhennan from the side.

Just as the two sides were locked in fierce combat, Chen Zhennan spotted an opening and shouted, "Take this!"

He leaped high into the air, like a roc spreading its wings, and slashed his curved blade toward an assassin's head with a sharp whistling sound.

The assassin stared in horror, trying to dodge but it was too late; he could only watch helplessly as the scimitar fell.

Just as the curved blade was about to strike the assassin, Chen Zhennan suddenly twisted his wrist, and the blade grazed the assassin's scalp, shaving off a patch of his hair.

The assassin was so frightened that he collapsed to the ground, wet his pants, and mumbled something unintelligible as he trembled.

Seeing this, the other assassins felt a chill run down their spines. But they were unwilling to give up so easily, and after a moment's hesitation, they gritted their teeth and charged forward again.

Chen Zhennan's lips curled into a disdainful smile, "They really won't shed a tear until they see the coffin."

Chen Zhennan charged into the group of assassins once again. They refused to leave even when given a way out, so the only option was to send them to their deaths!

"Yunming, follow me and fight your way out!"

At Chen Zhennan's command, the two charged straight into the enemy ranks like arrows released from a bow.

Amidst the flashing blades, Chen Zhennan's curved knife moved like a serpent emerging from its hole, each swing bringing with it a chilling wind, while Song Yunming's was like a dragon churning the river, its tip sweeping away all who touched it.

"Like a mantis trying to stop a chariot, utterly overestimating one's own strength!"

Chen Zhennan sneered, turned around, and his curved blade flashed like lightning, severing the throat of an assassin.

Song Yunming was not to be outdone; with a flash of his blade, another assassin fell into a pool of blood.

The battle was extremely fierce. Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming moved through the group of assassins like two whirlwinds, each strike a fatal blow.

Finally, through their combined efforts, the remaining dozen or so assassins were killed one by one, leaving only two survivors.

"Don't move, or you'll die!" Chen Zhennan's voice was deep and powerful, and the assassin had no choice but to obediently stop struggling.

On the other side, Song Yunming also easily subdued another assassin.

Only then did the Imperial Guards arrive late. Their leader, Bai Dongrui, clad in silver armor and wielding a long spear, strode over menacingly, his eyes fixed on the two surviving assassins.

"Chen Zhennan, Song Yunming, how dare you two act without authorization within the palace! Hand over the prisoner to me at once!"

Song Yunming looked him up and down, frowned, and asked, "Who are you? Why are you pointing and gesturing here?"

Bai Dongrui slightly raised his eyes and said solemnly, "I am Bai Dongrui, the commander of the Imperial Guards. Assassins who broke into the palace at night should be taken away by me. Is that not right?"

Chen Zhennan's eyes were sharp, and he suddenly noticed something strange in Bai Dongrui's eyes. Something was wrong, so he immediately refused.

“These bastards are here to assassinate me, and I must interrogate them myself.”

After saying this, Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming ignored the Imperial Guards' obstruction and left with the two prisoners. Bai Dongrui dared not make any rash moves and could only watch helplessly as Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming left with their men.

"Brother-in-law, are we going to find Wang Gan?" Song Yunming asked.

“Exactly, this is no small matter. These bastards must be Song Xuan’s men. There should be Song Xuan’s spies around Wang Gan. I have to find them for him,” Chen Zhennan replied in a deep voice.

Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming walked side by side. Behind them were two bound prisoners, their faces pale, their eyes filled with fear and unease.

Inside the Imperial Study, the lights were on and the atmosphere was heavy. Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming led two prisoners into the Imperial Study and threw them in front of Wang Gan.

Wang Gan sat upright on the dragon throne, his eyes sharp as he scrutinized the two uninvited guests.

With a wave of his hand, Chen Zhennan forced the two assassins to their knees, their knees striking the cold marble floor with dull thuds.

"Speak, who are you? Why are you breaking into the imperial city at night?" Chen Zhennan asked coldly.

The two assassins looked at each other, and finally answered through gritted teeth, "We...we just broke into the imperial city at night to rob it."

Upon hearing this answer, not only Chen Zhennan and Song Yunming scoffed, but even Wang Gan couldn't help but let out a cold laugh, as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.

A cold glint flashed in Chen Zhennan's eyes. He suddenly reached out and grabbed one of the assassins by the neck. His fingers tightened like iron clamps, and the assassin's face turned from red to purple. He was almost suffocating to death.

Just as the assassin was about to die, Chen Zhennan slowly released his grip. The assassin was reborn, panting heavily as if he had just escaped death.
