Chapter 244 You have to grant me one request

When Hong Xiaoduo sat up, Feiyan had already gotten up and lit the candles.

Pushing open the door, one sees several people outside: Quan Jinghuai with a furrowed brow, an apologetic innkeeper, and the guard from the evening who looks haggard and anxious.

"Young lady, I tried to stop him, but he..." the waiter quickly explained.

Before the waiter could finish speaking, the guard clasped his hands and knelt on one knee before Hong Xiaoduo, pleading, "Please, young lady, save my mistress. I know this is very impolite, but right now, only you can save her."

“But I’m not a doctor.” Hong Xiaoduo frowned as she replied. She knew that the person was there to ask for help, not to seek medical treatment, so there was no misunderstanding that she was a doctor.

She frowned not because she was sleeping soundly and had been disturbed, but because she sensed that the matter must be quite serious. Otherwise, why would such a grown man come to kneel down and beg for help in the middle of the night?

"Please, young lady, just let that young master see my lady. He's the one who was frightened by my lady this evening," the guard said with great difficulty.

It was so presumptuous and difficult to ask, and he really couldn't think of any other solution.

"What happened to your wife?" Hong Xiaoduo asked.

Even though it was an urgent matter, since the other person seemed to know everything for no apparent reason, I naturally had to ask.

"Tell me where she is now?" Hong Xiaoduo asked again, seeing his anxious expression.

"It's right outside the inn." The innkeeper had just finished explaining to the other guests who had been woken up when he turned around and heard Hong Xiaoduo ask, so he quickly told her.

"Take me to see this place first," Hong Xiaoduo said to the guard.

Upon hearing this, the other person opened their mouth as if to say something, hesitated for a moment, and then got up and walked out.

Hong Xiaoduo gestured for Quan Jinghuai to stay upstairs, while she went over to see what was going on. She didn't know anything, so she couldn't just take Kaiyang with her.

As they walked out, the guard briefly explained that the lady had been put to sleep by him in the evening and taken back to her residence. After waking up, she cried and made a scene, refusing to eat or drink. Not only that, she even broke the bowl containing the medicine soup, picked up a piece of porcelain and held it to her neck, threatening to kill herself to force her to come out and find Kaiyang, whom she had met in the evening.

No amount of coaxing or deception from those around her worked. If anyone got even slightly closer, she would actually slit her throat. Her servants had no other choice but to bring her out to search for someone.

They searched for him at every inn, but fearing that he would disturb the peace of the entire inn, after discussing it, his wife finally agreed to wait outside.

As they were talking, Hong Xiaoduo followed them to the outside of the inn. Under the hanging lanterns, a carriage was parked in the middle of the road, with a coachman and the maidservant she had seen in the evening.

When the coachman and the servant saw Hong Xiaoduo, they all looked behind her. Seeing that there was no one there, they immediately showed worry on their faces.

The guard didn't bother to explain to them and went straight to the carriage window, whispering, "Madam, the child's family has arrived."

After saying that, he pulled back the curtain of the car window, signaling that Hong Xiaoduo could come forward.

Hong Xiaoduo stepped forward. Lanterns hung in front of the carriage, and the carriage was also lit up, so Hong Xiaoduo could see the situation inside very clearly.

The lady inside looked even worse than she had been in the evening. Hong Xiaoduo looked inside, and she stared back at the outside.

A thin, veiny hand gripped a shard of porcelain tightly against his throat. His fair neck was cut, though not deeply, but his clothes were stained red.

"Please, please, let me see the child, okay?" The lady's lips trembled for a while, her voice hoarse and stammering as she pleaded, her eyes instantly turning red.

"Let me think about it." After saying that, Hong Xiaoduo took a few steps to the side, gesturing for the guard to come over as well.

"What's going on? Why is she so determined to see my child?" Hong Xiaoduo asked in a low voice.

"It's a long story," the guard said, unsure where to begin.

Hong Xiaoduo frowned and interrupted, "Make a long story short, get to the point."

“My wife’s only son passed away unexpectedly before he even turned one year old,” the guard replied after a moment’s thought.

Even though I'm at least half a decade older than her, why do I seem like her junior?

Hong Xiaoduo understood. This lady's heart condition and mental breakdown were due to the loss of her son. No wonder!

Turning back to the carriage window, her voice softened involuntarily as she said, "I can agree to let you see the child, but I have conditions."

Upon hearing that she could see the child, the woman's eyes lit up: "Tell me."

“It’s definitely not appropriate for you to see him like this. It will frighten him. Children are timid, and you should know that better than I do, Madam,” Hong Xiaoduo said, pointing to the woman’s collar.

The woman immediately looked down and saw the bloodstains on her clothes.

"If you want to see the child, throw away what you're holding first. Let's find a clinic to bandage the wound, tidy up a bit, and change our clothes, okay?"

"Of course, you can refuse, and I can refuse to let you see the child." After Hong Xiaoduo finished speaking, she looked at the other person.

"You really agree? You're not just trying to fool me?" the woman asked in disbelief.

Facing the pitiful woman, Hong Xiaoduo showed no impatience whatsoever; "If you don't believe me, then pretend I didn't say anything, and I'm going back to sleep."

After saying that, she made a move to leave.

The guards, servants, and even the coachman standing nearby all pricked up their ears to listen. All three of them realized that Hong Xiaoduo was saying this on purpose. While they breathed a slight sigh of relief, they also marveled at how kind this unfamiliar young woman was, willing to help with this matter.

"I believe you." A hurried reply came from inside the carriage, as if afraid that Hong Xiaoduo had really left.

Seeing their mistress throw the porcelain shards out of the carriage, the three men finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Alright, let's find a clinic quickly," Hong Xiaoduo said to the guard.

"And you, young lady?"

Hong Xiaoduo understood his meaning and immediately declared, "I will go with you."

Upon hearing her words, the guard immediately relaxed, quickly looked around the streets, and told the driver to drive towards the nearest clinic.

The clinic was closed at night. After knocking on the door to ask for medical help and having his neck wound bandaged, he returned to his lodgings and helped the woman wash up and change into clean clothes.

Hong Xiaoduo was present while she was doing these things, which put the woman at ease.

"Don't worry, young lady. Even when my mistress has an attack, she only hurts herself and never attacks anyone else," the maid said to Hong Xiaoduo in a low voice after glancing at her mistress looking in the mirror after washing up.

Hong Xiaoduo nodded: "I know, otherwise I wouldn't have agreed."

After looking in the mirror, the woman turned to look at Hong Xiaoduo with an urgent gaze.

"Let's go then," Hong Xiaoduo said.
