Chapter 30 Frustrating Connection

"Ahem, actually I regret it now. In my family, three generations, my grandfather passed away at the age of ninety-six with regrets, his eyes were not even closed. Although my father was never interested in this research, he devoted his whole life to it. As for me, you can see, I am also this old. I finally met you, and I didn't think too much. I was just too excited at the time. I thought that no matter what, the safest thing to do was to send you there first."

The old man wasn't worried about running out of time, and suddenly went offline because he felt guilty and was a bit incoherent.

"Heh, yeah, it's finally here. If you don't hurry up and deliver it, what if I die in an accident later? You might die with regrets, your son, your grandson," Hong Xiaoduo sneered.

So it's just that she's unlucky. Even if the old man was rational this time and didn't rush to send her over, he must still be keeping a close eye on her. Otherwise, when the purpose of the experimentation chamber is realized and she can be used, where will he find her in a short time?

"You're only thinking about getting me here to be safe, that I can't escape. But have you considered that I'll also encounter all sorts of unexpected dangers in this place, and I'll die too? In the end, you'll still have nothing to show for it, and you'll still die with your eyes wide open in disbelief," Hong Xiaoduo warned in a harsh tone.

Hong Xiaoduo repeatedly mentioned that the old curator would die with his eyes open in disbelief, although it was unintentional and not a malicious curse.

However, every time she mentions it, the old curator is reminded of the time he was a child when he saw his grandfather off at his deathbed. His grandfather's eyes were wide open after he breathed his last, and his father tried to stroke them several times but couldn't close them, so he had to give up in the end.

He has dreamed of this scene many times over the years; when he was a child, he would wake up crying in fear.

Even after he became a father and is now a grandfather, he no longer cries when he dreams of this scene, but he still feels fear in his dreams and wakes up covered in cold sweat.

It was as if his grandfather was warning and reminding him from beyond the darkness that he must fulfill his last wish.

That is why, no matter how slow or monotonous the research was, he never gave up.

Upon hearing Hong Xiaoduo's suggestion, he quickly waved his hand, "No, since you fit the criteria for this research, you are the protagonist, the most important person. Even if you encounter any danger, you will turn misfortune into good fortune."

Look, aren't you perfectly fine now?

Hong Xiaoduo pointed to her face and asked the person on the screen, "Me? I'm fine? Oh, right, I'm not injured, crippled, or dead. Anyway, let's not waste any more time on this. I have a suggestion, you can listen to it and see if it works."

"Are you suggesting that I bring you back first, and then contact you later when I've cracked the file's password and know the ultimate purpose of this experiment?" Being a researcher, his mind works incredibly fast.

Hong Xiaoduo nodded. Yes, that's exactly what she meant. At that time, it's easy to talk things over, and she might not necessarily object. She might even be very cooperative.

"Huh? Oh no, the system is acting up again, Hong Xiao..." The old curator was a little nervous, and disappeared before he could finish speaking, leaving the wall bare and white again.

Hong Xiaoduo frowned. She felt that the disconnection this time was not a system problem, but more likely caused by that old man because he did not accept her suggestion.

But she had no evidence!

"Hmph, will running away solve the problem? You can hide forever, but you can't hide forever. If you're so capable, then don't contact me again." Hong Xiaoduo was angry, so all she could do was utter some harsh words to the bare wall.

With a thought, she left the space and sat on the bunk, becoming increasingly agitated.

This video call with the old man felt worse than not having connected at all. They talked a lot and learned a lot, but none of what she learned made her happy; it just made her depressed.

She had initially worried that her parents would be anxious and heartbroken because of her disappearance, but it turns out they've both started their own families; one is a loving father, and the other a devoted wife and mother. She was an extra, unloved by her parents, and her existence or non-existence made no difference to them.

What's even more tragic is that the old man at the science museum didn't even know the password to the original research data. Does that mean that if he can't crack the password, she won't know the purpose of being tricked?

I don't know how or when I can go back.

The successive blows left even the usually composed Hong Xiaoduo unable to recover for a while, and she sat motionless on her bunk for more than an hour.

She heard the innkeeper's mother, Granny Lanhua, asking why the children were all standing outside. Only then did she sigh softly, stand up, rub her cheeks, open the door, and go out.

"Young lady, are you feeling unwell? You look so pale. Should I call a doctor to take a look?" Granny Lan asked worriedly as soon as she saw her.

Is it that obvious? Hong Xiaoduo thought she had concealed it quite well.

"No need, it's okay, it's just, it's just..." For a moment, she didn't know what reason to give.

After hearing what Granny Lanhua said, Tian Shu and the others looked at her nervously and worriedly. No wonder she had rushed back and was alone in the house; she must have been feeling unwell.

Upon hearing this, Grandma Orchid stepped forward with a smile and gently patted her hand: "No need to say anything, Grandma understands. It's not easy being a woman."

Remember not to catch a cold. I'll have the kitchen make you some mugwort and brown sugar water later.

Huh? Hong Xiaoduo finally understood. It turned out that her stammering and inarticulate speech had made her mother-in-law misunderstand that she was having her period.
