Chapter 337 How did it become "maternal grandfather"?

"Your humble servant Wei Junpei greets Your Excellency." The person walking behind stepped forward to pay his respects.

Dong Xiang was still lost in thought about when and how his youngest son had become an uncle when Wei Junpei's voice pulled him back to reality. He nodded somewhat perfunctorily.

As a high-ranking official, he was completely bewildered by the scene before him and didn't know how to react.

Fortunately, he knew that the man in front of him was an upright official who never engaged in any sycophantic behavior towards his superiors. Although they had served in the same court for many years, they only interacted in terms of political affairs and rarely visited each other. Occasionally, when they met outside the court, they would simply exchange a few words of greeting.

"Kaiyang, it really is you! What brings you here? Oh my, the little guy is so different from the last time I saw him." Inside the fence, Dong Yuefan, who had been in low spirits, was overjoyed.

"Uncle Yuefan, you are so different from when we last met." Kaiyang felt relieved to see his uncle's excitement. His mother was right; even if people you care about are far away or haven't seen each other for a long time, you will still be just as affectionate when you meet again, and you won't become strangers.

After hearing this, Dong Yuefan reached out from behind the fence and gently patted Kaiyang on the shoulder: "You little Kaiyang, you dare to tease your uncle?"

"I never imagined you were Minister Wei's grandson!"

"Kaiyang never expected that you, Uncle, are the Prime Minister's son," Kaiyang replied happily.

Then, the two, one big and one small, burst into unrestrained laughter through the fence.

When Dong Xiang and his second son saw how happy their sixth son was to see a stranger, even more affectionately than when he saw them, they couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. Anyone who didn't know better would think that he and this little kid were family!

"Ahem, Kaiyang, don't be so presumptuous. Quickly come over and pay your respects to the Prime Minister." Wei Junpei, noticing the change in Prime Minister Dong's expression, quickly coughed lightly to remind him.

However, just now, the intimacy between his grandson and Dong Xiang's good-for-nothing sixth son was so natural that he couldn't help but feel a little envious.

Having already learned from Hong Xiaoduo and Kaiyang how they met Dong Liu and how he had helped them out of kindness, they found the man locked in the fence quite pleasing to the eye.

It seems that one really shouldn't listen to hearsay or believe rumors.

Reminded by his grandfather, Kaiyang quickly straightened his robes and bowed respectfully to Prime Minister Dong: "Kaiyang greets Your Excellency, and wishes Your Excellency good health and longevity."

The movement, the angle of the bend, the clasped fists—there's not a single flaw to be found.

Prime Minister Dong had heard about Minister Wei finding his grandson, but he was a little curious. The family the child had been with before returning to the Wei family must have been of unusual status, otherwise, how could the child's behavior have been so well-mannered in just a few days?

However, because of his good-for-nothing son, he had never heard anything about his grandson, Minister Wei.

"Child, no need for formalities. Very well, Lord Wei, you are destined for good fortune." Prime Minister Dong reached out to help the child up and sincerely said to Wei Junpei.

Wei Junpei quickly smiled, bowed, and said, "Thank you, Prime Minister."

He didn't specify what he was thanking them for, after all, the person in question had a son imprisoned in front of them. Too much talk could lead to mistakes; keeping it simple was best.

“Father, Kaiyang is my nephew. It’s your first time meeting him, and you haven’t given him anything as a gift? That’s not appropriate!” Dong Yuefan said with a grin from inside the fence.

Upon hearing this, Prime Minister Dong clenched his fist under his sleeve and looked at his son, thinking to himself, "You good-for-nothing! Don't you even know where we are? Where am I supposed to prepare a gift for our meeting?"

She watched as her son's gaze fell to her side, and he even winked at her.

Dong Xiang gritted his teeth, trying to keep himself calm and not get angry. He thought that if he was going to fight, he should do it in a place where there were no outsiders.

But is there really still a chance to teach this son a lesson? Oh well!

Dong Xiang's eyes welled up with tears. He took off the jade pendant he had worn for many years from his waist and handed it to Kaiyang: "Child, since this is our first meeting, I don't have anything good to give you, so I'll just give you this."

Although he is just a child, he is completely different from the good-for-nothing friends his good-for-nothing son has. His son cares about this child!

Kaiyang didn't take it, but looked at his grandfather.

"Your Excellency, this is unacceptable!" Wei Junpei quickly said.

The jade pendant that the Prime Minister wore has been around for many years, which shows how much he liked it.

"I cannot refuse a gift from an elder." Dong Xiang ignored Wei Junpei's refusal and spoke kindly to Kaiyang.

"Xiao Kaiyang, hurry up and take it. I'm your uncle, and he's practically your maternal grandfather." Dong Yuefan urged Kaiyang to take the jade pendant.

Upon hearing this, Kaiyang immediately accepted the jade pendant with both hands. Then, his next move surprised even Dong Yuefan inside the fence.

After accepting the jade pendant, Kaiyang knelt down before Prime Minister Dong, saying, "Kaiyang thanks my maternal grandfather for bestowing the jade pendant. I kowtow to my maternal grandfather." With that, he kowtowed deeply.

Dong Yuejie was a little dumbfounded. What? How did he become her maternal grandfather?

None of the shady friends my sixth brother made were so eager to climb the social ladder!

Wei Junpei was at a loss for words. His embarrassed old face looked around, and he regretted that he should have followed his grandson in. Couldn't he have waited outside?

After recovering from his shock, Prime Minister Dong was also somewhat amused and exasperated. Seeing the child raise his head, his forehead red from kowtowing and his clear eyes, his heart softened and he bent down again to help the child up: "Good child, from now on in the capital, I'll have your grandfather take you to his mansion to play."

Kaiyang nodded happily, then turned to Dong Yuefan inside the fence and said, "Uncle Yuefan, Grandfather and I brought you some delicious food and wine."
