Chapter 34 She accepted it

The person quickly arrived, and the servant handed her a brocade pouch: "My master is Dong Yuefan. He said that you, young lady, know this. Because he has important business to attend to, he cannot come to see you off in person, so he sent me to deliver this. He said that our acquaintance is fate, and he asks you to accept it."

My master also said that if the young lady isn't in a hurry to travel, she should try to find a place to rest as early as possible during the day, and take the main roads whenever possible, avoiding taking the shortcuts along remote mountain paths.

Hong Xiaoduo smiled and took the brocade bag. It was heavy, and she knew without looking that it contained silver. "Please thank Brother Dong for me. Tell him that we will meet again someday. I also wish him a bright future and a smooth official career. And thank you, young man, for making this trip."

Why say "again"? Because they've already done me a huge favor.

After Hong Xiaoduo finished speaking, she turned around and walked away.

The servant watched her turn around, then looked down at himself, his hands now empty. He looked up again, seemingly in disbelief. Shouldn't he have been a little more polite, declined a little, and then accepted the money?

Seeing the servant's reaction, and noticing that he was looking over, Tian Shu quickly turned around and continued driving the donkey.

After taking a few steps, I secretly glanced at Hong Xiaoduo. She looked perfectly normal!

At this moment, in Dong Yuefan's courtyard, looking at his good brother who had already packed up but hadn't immediately mounted his horse and left, he grumbled inwardly.

If I had known this would happen, I would have gone to see Little Duo off first.

"Brother Dong, where's Sanjin?" Dong Yuefan looked around at the guards leading the horses, and it seemed that one of them was missing. He didn't know where he had gone.

My good brother came with several guards. They usually stay in the next courtyard and don't eat together. Now that he's leaving, why is one missing? Have they developed bad habits from being left to their own devices all this time?

Or has he found a lover in town? Haha, doesn't your good brother always brag that none of his men are womanizers? Well, there's one who can't control his belt!

Before he could get a response from his good brother, the servant he had sent out to escort Little Duo back returned.

Seeing that he came back empty-handed, she immediately laughed: "Well done, what did you say that made her accept it?"

"Hmph, only a fool would turn down money that's been handed to him like that," Mu Zitao said, looking at him as if he were an idiot.

Dong Yuefan rolled her eyes at him and continued looking at her servant.

After hearing his master's good brother's words, the servant looked at his master and didn't know how to respond, because telling the truth would seem to confirm what General Mu had just said.

"I just said what you instructed, Master, and didn't say anything else." He glanced at his master and didn't dare to lie after all.

Others might not understand, but as his personal servant, he knew his master's temperament better than anyone else. It was alright to make some minor mistakes, but if he tried to be clever and lied, his master would not forgive him easily once he found out.

"Look, this is the kind of person who gets along with me. If I want it, I want it; if I don't want it, I don't want it. Isn't that much better?" Dong Yuefan was very pleased.

"Well, whatever makes you happy, Mr. Dong. I'll take my leave now. Before I go, I'd like to offer you some advice: if you want to return to the capital as soon as possible, you should behave yourself as before and stop acting recklessly and arbitrarily."

Looking at his subordinate Sanjin outside the door, Mu Zitao reminded his good brother as he walked out.

Several of his men led the horses and followed closely behind.

Watching the group mount their horses and ride away, Dong Yuefan covered his mouth and nose with his sleeve to shield himself from the dust kicked up by the horses' hooves, waiting for his good brother to turn around and wave back. But no one came.

A sigh, slumped shoulders, and a sorrowful gaze made even the servant feel a little sorry for her.

Once they left the town, Mu Zitao slowed down and began to regret his decision. Now that he knew which direction she was heading, why had he set off so early? They were just a donkey cart; how fast could they possibly go?

Should we leisurely follow behind? Or should we overtake them first...?
