In the mountains and forests, the three men were getting impatient.
I've been waiting here all morning, and yet not a single suitable target has appeared.
A caravan passed by, looking quite lucrative, but they had actually hired bodyguards. Looking at the emblem on the guard flag fluttering in the wind, it was clear they were not to be trifled with.
Then another group of horsemen arrived, each carrying a weapon. Of the six, only one looked scholarly, while the other five appeared even more formidable than the previous bodyguards.
"Don't rush, wait a little longer. It's still early before sunset. Logically speaking, there should still be pedestrians passing by at this time, and they might just be easy targets," a burly man reassured his brother.
"Boss, I've been feeling uneasy and uneasy all day. How about we call it a day and head back?" A slightly shorter man suggested hesitantly.
Upon hearing this, the man sitting next to him kicked him, saying, "Qu Ba, you useless thing, you're flustered because you didn't eat anything at noon, and you're uneasy because you saw those groups that went there today, and they were all tough guys, so you're scared."
"Brother, am I right?" the man said, then asked the one who had spoken first, trying to please him.
The man called "Big Brother" glared at Qu Ba: "I've already led you through so many cases, but why haven't you developed any courage? Instead, you've become more and more cowardly. Don't come with me next time. Just stay in the nest and do odd jobs. Just don't be envious of the silver and good stuff I give to Lai Tou."
Upon hearing this, Qu Ba became anxious and quickly said, "No, brother, I'm not scared. It's just that you always say that we have to be careful in our business and never be careless."
"Tch, does the boss need your reminder? If he were really careless, would he have waited until now? He would have made his move when the previous groups of people came over." The bald-headed man said disdainfully.
I've always disliked this kid. He's not very capable, but every time he succeeds, he gets the same delicious food as me.
Lai Tou genuinely felt that having this underling made little difference; at most, it just added up the numbers and provided an extra laborer to move things afterward.
"Alright, all of you shut up. Your chatter is giving me a headache," the eldest brother hissed irritably.
Although he has been in this line of work for several years, it is common for him to wait all day without finding a suitable target and return empty-handed. He is used to it. However, as he is used to it, he does not like this feeling.
So what? The world has been in chaos these past few years, which is why he dared to do such a thing.
He could never have enough men under his command because highway robbery was risky. If he misjudged a tough guy, he might lose his life instead of the loot.
So whenever he lost a henchman, he would find a suitable one to recruit.
He always kept the number of his underlings to around three to five.
Having more people makes things more reliable and provides more targets to choose from. However, a large number of people can easily attract the attention of the authorities, and they might be wiped out if things go wrong.
Other robbers from other places also wanted to recruit him, but he refused them all. He felt more comfortable, powerful, and had more authority as the boss. He could decide how much of the loot to give his underlings each time he succeeded, depending on his own whims.
Why become someone else's lackey? Not only will you be subject to their control, but you'll also risk your life for them. After you succeed, you'll have to depend on the boss's mood to see how much you get. Why give up your freedom?
He knew that Lai Tou disliked Qu Ba, but he couldn't be bothered to do anything about it whenever Qu Ba tried to bully him.
Everyone says that unity and cooperation are essential, and that their strength can break metal, but he doesn't think that way. The deep brotherhood among his subordinates isn't all good for him.
If one day they get jealous of him taking the lion's share as the boss, and feel resentful, they could team up to cause trouble and destroy him.
Hmph, although he is a martial artist, he considers himself to be quite shrewd; otherwise, how could he have remained so peaceful until today?
Meanwhile, not far from the three robbers, some of the six men, growing impatient, couldn't help but mutter, "This donkey cart can't be this slow, can it? Why hasn't it arrived yet at this hour?"
The others remained quite calm. Was their master trying to play the hero and save the damsel in distress? Otherwise, in the past, when they encountered similar situations on the road, they would usually take care of the villains before they even made a move.
Two groups of people, hidden in the woods, were waiting.
The people on the donkey cart had no idea that someone was thinking of them. They had snacks when they were hungry, water when they were thirsty, and could rest for a while by leaning on their companions when they were sleepy.
Tian Shu, who was driving the cart, was biting into a sesame seed cake in one hand while driving the cart.
I was initially worried that I wouldn't be able to drive the cart properly, but this donkey was so easy to handle. I didn't have to do anything at all; as long as I didn't pull on the reins to make it stop, it would just keep going.
As the donkey cart drew closer to the woods, the two groups hidden inside became more alert.
"Boss, this is sure to work, right?" the bald-headed man asked excitedly.
The eldest brother nodded and analyzed in his mind that this target was someone he could take action against. The driver was a boy, and judging from his clothes, he didn't look like a coachman. Although it was just a donkey cart, the cart looked brand new.
Regardless of what the owner of this donkey cart does, he must be making some money.
Besides, it's already this late; if we miss this chance, we might really go home empty-handed.
Thinking of this, he waved his hand, and his two henchmen, as he had instructed, pulled the black cloth around their necks, covered half their faces, and spread out to both sides while bending over.
On the bus, Hong Xiaoduo, who was resting with her eyes closed, suddenly heard a voice from ahead: "This mountain is mine, this tree is mine, if you want to pass, leave your toll."
