Chapter 5 The Wild Game is Roasted

After the man revealed his fierce expression, he kept a close eye on Hong Xiaoduo's expression. He originally thought he had finally intimidated her, but to his surprise, she just curled her lips in disdain and didn't react at all. What was wrong? Was she scared?

The seven little beggars, however, left the fire of roasting meat and gathered around the young woman.

Seeing the seven children around her, all of them, regardless of their age, with the same expression on their faces, clearly terrified, yet clutching stones and sticks (small twigs), as if they were ready to fight to the death with her.

Hong Xiaoduo looked quite surprised. Shouldn't these seven little ones be protecting their own flesh and blood?

The hungry men in front of them starved intently at the roasting game, their eyes glued to it as if they feared it would fly away and they would have nothing to eat if they blinked.

She felt something was touched inside her, but she didn't know if it could be considered being moved.

"Don't be nervous, it's okay. Look at this stick you're holding, what can you do with it?" Hong Xiaoduo gently comforted the children who were extremely nervous and panicked, while looking at the little girl closest to her and asking.

The little girl looked to be only five or six years old. She was thin from prolonged hunger, and her small body was trembling slightly with tension.

Hearing Hong Xiaoduo's question, he looked down at his hand.

Hong Xiaoduo gestured for her to see the stick in her hand, and only then did the little girl loosen her tightly clenched hand.

Hong Xiaoduo picked up the small wooden stick and gently broke it apart. The stick, which had been corroded by wind and rain, was broken in two.

Uh, the little girl's face immediately turned a little embarrassed, and she didn't dare to look at Hong Xiaoduo, as if she had done something wrong. But when she saw her brothers looking for weapons, this was all she had.

Hong Xiaoduo looked at the oldest child and asked, "Are those almost done roasting?"

The young man wasn't sure why she asked that, but he nodded.

Hearing him say that, Hong Xiaoduo looked up at the person on horseback.

The man on horseback wasn't far from Hong Xiaoduo, and she had overheard her question to the older boy. She thought to herself, "Why didn't you know better earlier?"

According to his guess, the young woman would probably appease the beggars and then have them bring over the roasted game.

He could smell the aroma of roasted game long ago while on horseback, and he couldn't help but swallow hard. It wasn't that he had never eaten it before, but he was just too hungry.

And also, these little beggars, their skills in roasting wild game look pretty good just by looking at it.

He imagined that he would feed his master first, and then he would get to eat the fragrant roasted rabbit and roasted pheasant. One bite would fill his mouth with deliciousness. It was a pity that he had to keep on his journey and couldn't drink alcohol.

He glanced smugly at his companion beside him, thinking, "Little rascal, you got lucky today because of me!"

Huh? What's with that expression? You don't want the barbecue anymore, huh? Seeing the ambiguous smile on Fan Wu's face again, the man was quite dissatisfied, but since he was with his master, he couldn't act like a woman and start arguing.

Hmph, I'll have no trouble getting my hands on him later!

"It's done baking? Okay, go and distribute it to your younger siblings, but be careful not to burn them." Hong Xiaoduo looked at the man on horseback, but spoke to the older boy, deliberately speaking loudly as if afraid someone wouldn't hear her.

What?

Aside from not being able to see the expressions of the people inside the carriage, the only one present who didn't show any confusion or surprise was Fan Wu.

"Hurry up, or it'll burn and won't taste good." Hong Xiaoduo knew what was going on and slowly urged him on.

"Oh." The older boy understood her meaning. Although he was quite surprised and a little worried, he still obediently led the younger ones back to the campfire.

As the little ones walked that way, they secretly glanced back at the man on horseback. Oh my, why does that villain seem to have gone mad?

Hong Xiaoduo looked at the big boy and took out a bamboo dagger from the tattered cloth bag that looked like a treasure chest. The other children next to her handed him the large leaves that they had prepared as usual.

The big boy skillfully divided the rabbit into two pieces, gesturing for one of them to be carried over to Hong Xiaoduo.

"You guys divide yours first, and give me the last one," Hong Xiaoduo said loudly, seeing through the boy's intention.

The boy paused only slightly after hearing this, then continued distributing the food to the other children.

Finally, the older boy himself carried a whole rabbit and half a pheasant in leaves and brought them to her.

Hong Xiaoduo gestured for him to take another half of the rabbit. Then, she tore off a leg of the roasted rabbit, held it to her nose and smelled it dramatically, then nodded with satisfaction.

The seven children, each holding their share of wild game, went behind Hong Xiaoduo, found seats, blew on it with their little mouths, and tentatively took small bites.

It smells so good, it's so hot, it tastes so good! Let me blow on it and eat it quickly.

The children were both afraid of getting burned and eager to eat, and they kept looking ahead, as if worried that the people on horseback would come and snatch it away. It looked a bit funny, but Hong Xiaoduo couldn't laugh.

Seeing the man on horseback looking as if he had been struck by lightning, Hong Xiaoduo was very satisfied. She took a bite of the rabbit leg meat and thought, "Hmm, it's cooked just right, and the salt is just the right amount."

"Children, is the meat delicious?" she asked loudly, not only eating it.

The seven little ones were eating with great relish when their mother asked them a question. They all stopped and loudly replied, "Delicious!" Then they continued eating the meat, oh, it smelled so good.

Only the largest one, after responding that it was delicious, glanced at the statue on the horse's back.

Then, I looked at the "Mother" on the stone. So that's what Mother was like. It felt so good!

"Eat slowly, it's okay," he whispered to his companions.
