Chapter 50 Night Walk

Regardless of his rank, he was accompanied by more than twenty guards when he went out, and even the driver was armed with a sword.

Does this also suggest that the old man himself might be in danger?

Although she had already considered this, she still followed the other party. In fact, she knew that if there was danger in the mountains ahead, the risk would be the same whether she traveled through the night or waited until daytime to set off with these seven children.

In the eyes of the robbers, she was nothing more than a young woman with seven children.

Since no matter how we analyze and weigh the pros and cons, the inherent dangers are still unavoidable, we might as well go with the old man and his group.

Thinking about all this, Hong Xiaoduo thought that modern society governed by the rule of law is really good.

If this were modern times, you could bring seven little ones along, riding in a car no taller than 1.2 meters, and you wouldn't even need to buy tickets.

This dynasty is far from peaceful; even traveling requires trepidation, especially through mountainous regions. We must find a place where these children can be properly cared for, and people we can entrust them to; we must search for them, rather than waiting in one place.

So, we can't just stay in one place because we're scared by the dangers we might encounter on the road, can we?

In the past few days, she has taught bad guys a lesson, gotten into fights, and recently even survived a highway robbery. Three times already, and she hasn't suffered a loss, which shows that her fighting skills here are quite considerable.

The only drawback is that its performance is not very consistent. For example, we still don't know if the villain we taught the first lesson is alive or dead.

So, what is the maximum level of her combat power? There's no instruction manual, and no one has told her. Does she have to find the answer through repeated practice and experience?

As Hong Xiaoduo pondered, she looked down at her sword. Her uncertainty about her own martial arts skills affected the sword's power.

Although she didn't understand swords, she knew that the sword in her hand was a good thing. It was a pity that even if she carried it, it wouldn't have any deterrent effect on others.

She wasn't stupid. From the way those people looked at her, she could tell that they didn't take her seriously at all, and that the sword was just an ornament she wore to show off.

Every time she looked at the sword in her hand, she felt guilty towards it.

Next time I go to a big place, I must find a weapons shop and find a weapon that suits me. Ideally, it should be powerful but not too bulky, so that I can both defend myself and protect the children and teach bad guys a lesson, so that they will not be able to continue to do evil in the future.

For the moment, I really couldn't think of anything suitable for me. Maybe I'll find something when I go into the shop.

If all else fails, there's always that old man at the science museum.

As darkness fell, Hong Xiaoduo began to regret her carelessness; she hadn't even thought to buy a lantern or some candles to keep on hand. While she could still see, she quickly pulled out the wooden frame from under the bench and placed it in the middle, then laid a mattress on top. Connecting the benches on both sides of the carriage created a flat, small communal sleeping area.

The children had already tried this process during the day, so now they can lie down and rest one next to another.

Hong Xiaoduo didn't lie down. The carriage was already quite small, and if she lay down, the children would all have to sleep on their sides.

"Mom, there's room." The little ones each squeezed out a space by turning to either side.

Hong Xiaoduo felt a warmth in her heart, but said with great disdain, "No, I can't sleep if we're all squeezed together like this. Besides, I'm not sleepy at all right now. You guys go to sleep first, and when we get to the inn tomorrow, I can sleep for a whole day and night and catch up on my sleep."

Upon hearing this, the children lay back down.

"Tian Shu, put on your cotton-padded coat. No one will see you at night, and no one will laugh at you," Hong Xiaoduo reminded the children outside as she covered them with blankets.

"Oh, I understand," Tian Shu replied, putting on the cotton coat he was holding.

He really wanted to tell Hong Xiaoduo in the carriage that he hadn't worn women's clothing because he was afraid of being laughed at by others, but because he had gotten her new cotton-padded coat dirty.

A sound came from outside. Peeking through the window, he saw the old man's guard bringing him a lantern.

Tian Shu accepted the lantern and thanked the guard. After the guard walked away, Tian Shu was about to put the lantern into the carriage when Hong Xiaoduo said that everyone was asleep and there was no need for it, so it was fine to hang it outside.

"Tian Shu, stop the car and I'll take over. Come in and take a nap." Half an hour later, Hong Xiaoduo looked out the window and saw that they were already passing through the mountains and forests, so she whispered to Tian Shu to stop the car.

The forest at night was pitch black, making one's heart tighten just looking at it.

When Tian Shu heard her say she was going to stop the car, he thought she was going to relieve herself, but after she stopped, it turned out that it was his turn to rest.

“Mother, I’m not sleepy or cold, so I don’t need to.” Tian Shu disagreed.

He wanted to do everything he could to prove he was a useful person, so naturally he couldn't let her drive the train.

"Listen to me and go inside quickly. I'm so uncomfortable in here, my legs are numb." Hong Xiaoduo stood to the side and 'complained' to him in a low voice.

Sure enough, Tian Shu, who had been so adamant about not giving up his position, immediately jumped down and handed her his cotton-padded coat.

As I handed her the whip, I suddenly remembered: "Mother, you've never driven one before, can you manage?"

Hong Xiaoduo reached out and snatched the whip, urging him to hurry up and get into the carriage.

"Oh, if you want it to leave, just lightly tap it twice with the whip, don't use force," Tian Shu still reminded him worriedly.

"Alright, I know, stop nagging." Hong Xiaoduo urged, both annoyed and amused.

Tian Shu was still uneasy, but dared not say anything more. He could only get on the bus, reach out and touch the empty seat before taking off his boots and carefully climbing over.

Only when they noticed that the donkey cart was moving again and quite steadily did they breathe a sigh of relief.

He could vaguely see the quilts covering his younger siblings and hear their even breathing, but Tian Shu was not sleepy at all.

This mother is very good to them and takes good care of them, but it seems she doesn't intend to take them with her forever. What should they do?

Outside the carriage, sitting on the shaft, Hong Xiaoduo thought that driving a donkey cart didn't require any skill at all.

Looking ahead, he realized that his delay had caused the carriage in front of him to stop and wait in the night. Only after seeing the donkey cart continue on its way did he set off again.

Hong Xiaoduo knew that there were several guards following her donkey cart at a distance.

Looking up at the night sky, the moon was hiding behind the clouds. Occasionally, night birds would chirp in the woods, their voices unpleasant. Combined with the pitch-black forest, it felt even more eerie.

"God, please don't add any more thrills tonight, let these poor children get a peaceful night's sleep," Hong Xiaoduo prayed softly to the night sky...
