Chapter 8 Small ones are easy to fool

Outside the carriage, after a moment someone responded: "Your Majesty, I think she must be from a wealthy family. I wonder why she ran away from home."

At this point, Fu Gang paused for a moment, then added, "I think she must be born of a concubine." A legitimate wife wouldn't be raised like this.

After being reprimanded by his master, he was afraid of saying something wrong and angering his master again. He thought that saying less would be the best course of action!

Another point is that he's not used to speaking without his front teeth, but he's feeling frustrated, aggrieved, and depressed, and there's nothing he can do about it.

It's no use being unwilling; I didn't even have a chance to sneak back and teach that little wench a lesson.

From now on, he should not only speak less, but also try not to be as proactive as before when his master has not explicitly instructed him to do certain things.

If he had known this trip would turn out like this, he would have preferred not to have come out with his master. It would have been better to stay in the manor and train with the instructors, even if it was a bit boring!

"Fan Wu?" The person in the carriage didn't respond after hearing this, but instead asked another person, "Why are you so quiet now?"

"Your Majesty, I am too dull to see anything," Fan Wu replied.

Upon hearing this response, the people in the carriage snorted: "You and that young lady seemed to be having a very pleasant conversation just now, and you looked very reluctant and worried when you left."

“From my perspective, it’s clearly Master himself who is very interested in her,” Fan Wu retorted without any hesitation.

Fu Gang, who was standing to the side, listened to their conversation and then glanced at his companion who immediately became expressionless. He felt even more upset.

They're both subordinates, so why is the master so lenient with this kid? Why does he treat me so disregarded?

What makes this kid so special? In terms of martial arts, he's not the best among those around the master, nor has he been by the master's side the longest, and he's certainly not the most skilled at scheming and offering advice to the master.

Why is his master so special to him? He takes him everywhere he goes.

However, upon closer reflection, what Fan Wu said does seem to make some sense.

Wasn't this trip quite urgent? Master has been in a hurry the whole way, only taking short breaks to avoid exhausting the horses. Just now, you had a disagreement with that young woman about buying wild game, which delayed your journey. Yet, Master didn't react at all, as if you were tired and had fallen asleep in the carriage.

In the end, it was only after he was ambushed by that little vixen and became enraged, wanting to go and kill her, that his master intervened and spoke up.

They bought wild game, but didn't even bother to clean it, make a fire, and roast it before continuing on their way? What were they going to do with it then? Just keep it in the carriage to look at?

The more Fu Gang thought about it, the more he realized that was the case. He couldn't help but admire Fan Wu. He really had to stay by his master's side. He could guess what his master was thinking.

But, would Master be interested in that little vixen? Surely not? Which type would Master prefer?

As long as the master nods, those dignified young ladies from noble families will scramble to get close to him.

“Master, if you are really interested in that young lady, then I will go and investigate her?” Fu Gang suddenly felt enlightened and couldn’t help himself, forgetting that just a moment ago he had planned to obediently keep his head down and do his job.

Before the person inside the carriage could respond, Fan Wu frowned and was about to speak.

"You? You can't even handle a small matter like buying wild game with her, and you want to investigate her? Do you think losing your front tooth won't affect you much?" The person in the carriage finished speaking and sighed helplessly.

How could there be such a stupid person under my command?

Fu Gang, who was mercilessly despised by his master, really wanted to slap himself a few times to teach him a lesson for his foul mouth and lack of self-discipline!

That's it. After this matter is settled with my master and we return to the manor, I'm afraid I'll never have the chance to go out with him again. I'll only be able to stay here and guard the gate.

Fan Wu, standing to the side, felt no sympathy for his companion, but he turned back to look at the carriage and shook his head with some regret.

Clearly, the master is interested in that young lady, probably just like I am, finding her special and interesting. But I have no other feelings for her; as for the master? That's uncertain!

The master and servants said nothing more and continued on their way.

Meanwhile, Hong Xiaoduo, who had received one hundred taels of silver, weighed the bag in her hand; it was about seven or eight jin (approximately 3.5-4 catties).

"Mother, when we get to town, we should exchange some loose silver for cash," the boy hesitated for a moment before cautiously reminding her.

Upon hearing this, Hong Xiaoduo tilted her head and looked at him. After thinking for a moment, she understood what he meant. It was inconvenient to buy small items with a whole ingot of silver, and secondly, it would make her an easy target for thieves.

“That makes sense, but now is not the time to talk about that. Have you all eaten your fill? If you have, we need to keep escaping—no, we need to keep moving. See? We can’t rest until the sun sets, understand?” she asked.

With one hundred taels of silver in hand, Hong Xiaoduo felt that she had become more calm and rational. She was not as irritable as before and could speak to the children in a peaceful manner.

The seven children nodded in unison, "Mother, we understand."

Hong Xiaoduo sensed that no matter how gently she tried to persuade them, or how fiercely she threatened them, the seven children would not change how they addressed her as "mother."

I might as well just block out that word myself.

They had all eaten their fill, and the children's voices were much louder. Without her having to tell them to stop, they covered the still-burning embers with soil.

Then, the slightly older ones led the younger ones, and the older boy carried the youngest one. They all followed behind Hong Xiaoduo obediently and continued on their way.
