Hong Xiaoduo realized from her mother's words that this must be a knot in her mother's heart, otherwise she wouldn't have brought it up now.
"Now that Mom has said it all, are you feeling any better? To be honest, I still don't know if I really do hold a grudge against you, as you say, Mom."
Before you told me about the divorce, I don't know if I was too carefree or if you hid it too well, but I didn't notice anything wrong between you.
Before that, you all seemed to have such a good relationship in my eyes. Every time I heard classmates say that their parents were arguing, I felt very fortunate. I was so happy because my parents love each other. I felt so lucky.
I thought I would continue to be so happy, but when I received my university acceptance letter with great joy, you two told me that you were divorced.
Mom, if you were me, how would you feel?
Without warning, I suddenly plummeted from the clouds into an abyss. I was completely stunned. For a long time after that day, I thought I was having a nightmare.
Later, after I was sure it wasn't a dream, and after I calmed myself down, I told myself that even though my parents were divorced, they were still my parents.
I also learned that you have each formed new families and have children, and that you are no longer just my father and mother.
Actually, I did go to see you. I saw you with your new partner, holding your child, enjoying a happy time together. I wasn't sure if my approach would affect you.
Do you remember your birthday four years ago? You were playing with your daughter in the children's play area of the supermarket. I saw that it was just the two of you, but I still didn't dare to go up to you, so I called you first.
The phone connected, and I had barely called out "Mom" when you asked me if I didn't have enough living expenses and whether I had asked Dad for some.
Before I could even react and say no, Mom, you said with a hint of helplessness, "Okay, wait, I'll transfer it to you."
Then, he immediately hung up the phone. He was in such a hurry because your daughter fell down on the thick foam mat.
I was standing so close that I could clearly see the nervousness in your eyes when you saw her.
Mom, whether it was before or after your divorce, have I ever asked you for money? Our family is well-off, and I never squander money. Others may not know this, but do you, Mom, not know it?
During my four years of university, I used up about one-fifth of the living expenses you and Dad gave me. After graduation, I became self-reliant and never used the money on that card again.
"So I don't understand, Mom, what makes you think that I rarely call you because I'm short of money and asking you for money?" Hong Xiaoduo sighed as she looked at her mother's stunned expression.
Hong Xiaoduo was a little annoyed. Why couldn't she stop herself? Did she come to see her mother today to complain and argue about right and wrong?
If your mother feels wronged, just let her talk it out. Once she vents, she'll feel better. Why should I take it so seriously?
Besides, what's the point of saying all this now?
It was clear that her mother wanted to refute what she had just said, but she only opened her mouth and seemed unsure of what to say.
"Okay, I know you're busy, Mom. This is a rare day off for me. Seeing that you're doing well lets you know that I'm doing just as well, and that's enough," Hong Xiaoduo said to her mother with a smile.
Just as her mother was about to speak, her phone rang. She glanced at it and looked somewhat troubled.
"Mom, you go ahead with your work. I'll stay a little longer before I leave," Hong Xiaoduo said with a smile.
"Are you going back to work today? How about we have a meal together after I finish what I need to do there?" the mother suggested.
My mother was referring to the two of us, which means she didn't intend for her to meet her current husband or the two children, nor did she invite her to visit her current home.
Whether it was because her mother was thinking of her and was afraid that she wouldn't want to see her or go home, or for some other reason, Hong Xiaoduo no longer wanted to know the answer.
Because it's meaningless.
Now that I'm an adult, and my parents are both living their own lives well, this peaceful and contented model is fine, so let's not change it!
"Alright, when will you take your next break?" the mother asked, having already stood up.
"I can't say for sure, maybe a few months, maybe a few years," Hong Xiaoduo said with a smile.
Upon hearing that it might be several years before they could see each other again, the mother hesitated and glanced at her phone.
"Alright, Mom, go ahead and get busy. We'll meet up for dinner again next time," Hong Xiaoduo urged.
Because if they continued talking, she didn't know what else to talk about.
"Alright, take care of yourself. Don't take your youth for granted and try not to stay up late. Sit a little longer, then wander around a bit. I'll go take care of things now." After saying that, the mother glanced at Hong Xiaoduo again before turning and leaving.
The coffee shop door blocked out the mother's figure. Hong Xiaoduo held a coffee cup in one hand and pressed the other hand to her heart. It was very peaceful here.
Ten minutes later, Hong Xiaoduo was walking on a commercial street when she realized that she had no desire to shop around.
Walk towards a pedestrian bridge and look down at the endless stream of cars, the coming and going of people, and the surrounding high-rise buildings, shops, and office buildings.
It's only been a little over two years since I left, so why can't I feel any sense of belonging here after all this time?
Was it because I lived too carefree and unrestrainedly during my two years in ancient times?
Or perhaps my personality is more suited to living in ancient times?
