Chapter 144 Heart-to-Heart Talk (1/2)

Chi's mother looked at Chi Yan with trembling eyes, and shakily raised her hand to touch his face, tears streaming down her face before she could speak.

Chi Yan knelt down and leaned his face close to hers. Her heart ached, and she hugged him, sobbing uncontrollably, "My poor Ayan, how have you managed all these years?"

She always thought her son's drastic change in temperament was due to some kind of trauma, but she never expected that the trauma came from her.

He silently endured so much behind their backs, yet they were completely unaware and almost misunderstood him!

Chi Yan's eyes were red, and he lowered his eyes and said in a low voice, "It's all over now. It's good that Mother is safe and sound."

He was also resentful. Didn't he want to make a name for himself and achieve something great?

Is he really content to be a spoiled brat, looked down upon and trampled underfoot?

But none of these are as important as one's closest relatives.

At that time, he had no power or influence and could only endure and lie low.

But it wasn't until he met Shen Tangning that he realized that rather than becoming a pawn to be slaughtered, it was better to be the one holding the pieces and take the initiative in his own hands.

Shen Tangning watched him silently from the side, her thoughts a jumble of emotions.

How much untold bitterness is hidden behind that seemingly calm tone?

She knew all too well that the treacherous nature of people in the inner quarters was no less treacherous than the unpredictable power struggles in the imperial court; the strife and intrigue among women were like a soft knife that could kill without drawing blood.

It is truly remarkable that the young Chi Yan could survive in such an environment.

What surprised her even more was that even growing up in such an environment, Chi Yan did not follow the crowd and become a scheming person. He still retained a touch of pure kindness deep in his heart, which was so rare.

"This is outrageous! I'm going to confront that wicked woman and demand an explanation!"

The more Chi's mother thought about it, the more indignant she became, and she suddenly stood up!

Chi Yan grabbed her arm, his brows slightly furrowed, and said calmly, "Mother, so many years have passed, it's hard to find any evidence now. If you go to confront her, do you think she'll admit it?"

Lady Hou was always ruthless in her actions and would not easily leave anyone with a handle against her.

She only dared to openly threaten Chi Yan because she knew he was young and no one would believe her.

Moreover, she never admitted to poisoning him; it was Chi Yan who deduced it himself.

"So, are we just going to let it go like this?!" Upon hearing this, Chi's mother was consumed by rage. A surge of anger rushed to her brain, and she suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood, leaving bloodstains on Chi Yan's clothes, which were tinged with a dark purple.

Shen Tangning's eyes widened in surprise, and she quickly took out a handkerchief to wipe her face.

"Manniang!"

When Chi's father saw this, he was shocked and didn't know what to do. But Chi Yan reacted very quickly and, together with Shen Tangning, helped Chi's mother to a chair.

The two then stepped back to allow the doctor to come forward.

With a solemn expression, the doctor took out silver needles from his bag and performed the acupuncture quickly and accurately, inserting a dense array of needles into several acupoints on the top of Chi's mother's head.

Finally, needles were inserted into each of Chi's ten fingers to draw blood.

Not long after the needles were inserted, Chi's mother's pale complexion had improved.

Seeing this, Shen Tangning breathed a sigh of relief; this was the residual toxins being forced out.

Sure enough, the doctor glanced at Chi's father and said in a reassuring tone, "Don't worry, sir. Only after spitting out this mouthful of blood can the poison in Madam's body be completely cleared."

Seeing that Chi's mother had lowered her eyes listlessly, her expression showing some fatigue.

Shen Tangning helped Chi's mother lean against the chair, and Chi's father quickly asked:

"So what's going on now?"

The doctor explained, "This is normal, don't worry." He paused and continued, "I will come for acupuncture every now and then. After several sessions, along with some medicine, the toxins will gradually be cleared away."
