Chapter 228 Attic Fire (2/2)

Liu Yi pointed in another direction: "Over there."

Chi Yan approached the terrified palace servants. Two of them forced him to kneel on the ground. Upon seeing Chi Yan and Liu Yifu, he immediately begged for mercy: "My lords, please spare my life! This servant knows his mistake, please forgive this servant this time..."

“You’ve burned so many books, and they’re all precious ancient texts. You couldn’t pay for it even with ten heads!” Chi Yan glanced at him, frowning with a troubled expression.

Liu Yifu pursed his lips and said coldly, "His Majesty is already aware of this matter. If you hadn't neglected your duties, how could the library have caught fire? How do you think His Majesty will punish you?"

In an instant, the palace maid's face turned even paler, her lips trembled slightly, and her eyes were filled with panic and unease.

The two of them, one playing the good cop and the other the bad cop, terrified him so much that he lost his composure.

Finally, Chi Yan frowned, looking troubled: "Alright, just answer my questions honestly and see if you can get His Majesty to give you a lenient sentence!"

The palace servant nodded hastily, his face beaming as if he had been granted a pardon: "Please ask, sir!"

Didn't you notice the windows were open when you were on patrol?

How could the palace servants make such a big mistake when they were supposed to patrol several times at night?

The palace maid bit her lip, looking nervous and somewhat dazed: "This servant remembers that it was clearly closed... or maybe it wasn't closed properly and the wind blew it open in the middle of the night."

Clearly, he himself wasn't entirely sure.

Liu Yi frowned again: "After we left yesterday, has anyone else come here?"

The palace attendant thought for a moment, then his eyes widened suddenly: "Yes! His Highness the Crown Prince's personal attendant came by once, saying he was returning a book."

A strange light flashed in their eyes simultaneously.

How did His Highness the Crown Prince get involved?

Chi Yan felt a chill in his heart, but smiled imperceptibly: "Did you hear anything in the middle of the night?"

Gong Xin shook his head guiltily; he had slept so soundly in the latter half of the night that he hadn't heard a sound.

The two walked to the side, and Liu Yifu's tone turned serious: "What do you think of His Highness the Crown Prince..."

“Absolutely impossible!” Chi Yan interrupted without hesitation. Meeting Liu Yifu’s suspicious gaze, he straightened his expression and asked, “What benefit would doing such a thing bring to His Highness the Crown Prince?”

"What good would that do for the Fourth Prince?" Liu Yifu insisted on fairness and refused to back down. "If that's the case, then both of them should be suspects. Are you perhaps biased because of your personal relationship with them?"

Chi Yan: "..."

While that's one reason, but...

Meeting Liu Yifu's hesitant gaze, Chi Yan sighed, "Alright, come with me."

Liu Yifu was still somewhat skeptical, but he and Chi Yan went to a corner on the first floor of the library. He saw Chi Yan use the momentum to leap onto the roof beam, and when he came down, he had a book in his hand.

Brushing the dust off the book, Chi Yan raised an eyebrow at him: "I told you there's no rush!"

Liu Yifu froze on the spot, looking at him with disbelief: "What is this?"

Chi Yan said matter-of-factly, "The book we're looking for!"

Liu Yifu's face was numb: "..."

Of course he knew, but how did he end up here?
