Chapter 27 Seeing Through Everything (2/2)

Shen Tangning took a sip of tea to moisten her throat: "What do you want to hear?"

Chi Yan looked up at him, his eyes playful: "You know that assassin?"

"We're complete strangers." She was telling the truth.

He frowned: "Then why did you help him?"

Shen Tangning pursed her lips and glanced at him lightly: "When you're under someone's roof, you have to bow your head. If I don't help him, he might kill me to vent his anger."

Chi Yan didn't quite believe this. She had acted too calmly at the time, and besides, from Xue Qing's words, it seemed as if Shen Tangning had been after the assassin from the very beginning.

His wife also had many secrets.

Chi Yan had no intention of probing her secret, so he reluctantly accepted the explanation, lazily stretched, and stood up: "Let's go back, your girl is probably going to cry."

Shen Tangning also stood up and suddenly asked, "What does my husband think of the Third Prince?"

Chi Yan turned around, pondered for a moment, and only said, "Extremely hypocritical, two-faced."

He finished speaking and then laughed nonchalantly, "I just said it casually. If the Third Prince finds out, I'll be in deep trouble! Madam, please don't put me in such an unjust position."

Shen Tangning's eyes flickered: "Then, my husband, who do you think has a better chance of competing for that position, the Third Prince or the Crown Prince?"

Chi Yan was taken aback, his gaze towards her filled with shock.

He couldn't hold back any longer. He took two steps forward, tugged at her, glanced meaningfully at the door, and whispered, "Disrespecting the imperial family? Are you out of your mind?"

Shen Tangning laughed instead: "I was just asking casually."

Chi Yan stared at her for a long time with a complicated look in his eyes, and said in a vague tone: "The outcome is still uncertain, and it is not yet known who will win."

Shen Tangning's heart sank, and she gave Chi Yan a deep look.

Everyone said he was ignorant and a good-for-nothing, but who would have thought that he had such a clear understanding of the situation in the court?

...

When the two returned to their seats and saw that the atmosphere was somewhat tense, Shen Tangning knew that the assassin's affair had been exposed.

"Miss!" Xueqing quickly came forward, her eyes filled with excitement.

Shen Tangning gave her a reassuring look, then turned her gaze to Wen Yao and Jiang Qingyue, who were following closely behind.

"Ningning, where have you been? Why have you changed your clothes? Oh, isn't that Young Master Chi?"

Chi Yan forced a smile.

Shen Tangning patiently explained, "I was originally looking for the jade pendant, but I accidentally tripped and fell, getting my clothes dirty. Luckily, I ran into my husband, who accompanied me to the tea room to change my clothes."

Wen Yao suddenly realized and couldn't help but sigh, "You're really lucky, you didn't run into..."

She fell silent halfway through her sentence.

Shen Tangning's eyes flickered slightly: "What's wrong?"

Jiang Qingyue sighed, her face filled with worry: "A servant just came to report that thieves have broken into the Princess's residence and are searching everywhere, so they told us not to wander around. Yao Yao is so worried that you might run into them!"

Shen Tangning suddenly realized, still feeling a lingering fear: "Then I was really lucky."

Chi Yan watched in awe, completely convinced.

Shen Tangning was also quite frustrated. Why was the third prince willing to risk his life and go through fire and water for him just because he saved the assassin?

He saved him, but the man didn't even leave a word.

Indeed, different people have different fates; what's said in storybooks is all false.

However, she didn't gain anything, and the Third Prince also left empty-handed, which made her feel somewhat relieved.
