Chapter 32 Does he look weak? (2/2)

Chi Yan's eyes seemed to want to say something, but he ultimately drank it with mixed feelings.

Shen Tangning glanced at the dense annotations in the book and was in a good mood: "My husband has been quite diligent lately. How about giving him a couple of days off?"

"The sun has risen in the west?" Chi Yan paused, looked out the window, and fixed his gaze on her face.

The soft morning light streamed through the window and gently fell on her face, making even the fine downy hairs on her cheeks clearly visible.

Shen Tangning smiled slightly, her red lips pursed, and her long, thick eyelashes lifted: "Husband, the way you say that makes it sound like I'm some kind of unreasonable person?"

Chi Yan was momentarily stunned, and for some reason dared not look closely. He subtly averted his gaze and cleared his throat: "Don't try to label me."

He paused, then asked about what happened at Furong Courtyard, "Aren't you worried that the old lady and the madam will hold a grudge against you and cause you trouble later?"

Shen Tangning smiled faintly: "Constant tolerance will only make people think you're easy to bully, and will only lead to them taking advantage of you and pushing their luck."

She lowered her eyes slightly and said softly, "I don't like to endure; I prefer to plan before I act."

Chi Yan paused, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes.

Yes, simply enduring it will only embolden the other party and make them more brazen.

Unfortunately, he understood this truth too late.

Shen Tangning's smiling voice rang in my ears: "I'd like to go to Putuo Temple to offer incense in a few days. Would you like to come with me, my husband?"

Chi Yan realized what he meant and looked at her with a half-smile: "Is this what you meant by giving me a vacation?"

Without batting an eye, she said, "I'll just treat it as a way to relax and also to pray for my husband's career to go smoothly."

He couldn't help but wonder: "Are you so sure I can pass the exam?"

Shen Tangning was even more puzzled than him: "My husband isn't stupid, so why didn't he pass the exam?"

She believed she had a good eye for people, and if Chi Yanruo was truly a hopeless case, she wouldn't bother putting in the effort.

Chi Yan was taken aback.

Perhaps remembering his previous failures, she spoke with more reassurance: "Perhaps we were just unlucky the last few times. Let's try again this time, we're sure to succeed!"

Chi Yan remained silent for a moment, then curled his lips into a smile: "You seem to have more confidence than I do."

——

"No, this matter absolutely cannot be left like this! Otherwise, wouldn't she, Chen Tangning, trample on my reputation? How will I be able to command respect in the future?"

Lady Hou thought it over and over, but she couldn't swallow this insult.

Money is secondary; Shen Tangning's actions are provocative, and even more so, they are an insult to her!

Just as the old woman was about to speak, a maidservant came in to announce, "Madam, the young master has arrived."

Lady Hou was somewhat surprised: "Why did you finish your shift so early today? You've come at the right time, I have something to say..."

When Chi Jingyu entered, his face was icy cold. He glanced at the still furious Madam Hou and cut to the chase: "Mother, stop asking Second Aunt for money. When did my child fall so low that he needs someone else to raise him?"

The thought of Xue Qing's sarcastic message, coupled with Shen Tangning's disdainful demeanor, made him feel a lump in his throat, unable to get up or down.

Just as Shen Tangning thought, Chi Jingyu was a scholar with his own pride, and he could turn a blind eye to the matter of asking people for money.

But when Shen Tangning tore away that veil of pretense and came directly to him, he could no longer sit still.

Lady Hou looked bewildered: "Am I wrong? Whom am I doing this for?"
