Yan Xingzhou dared not look at Shen Tangning for more than a second, for fear of revealing the murderous intent in his eyes. He lowered his eyes and declined in a feigned panic: "This servant's little injury is hardly worth troubling the imperial physician. This servant has already applied medicine and will be fine after resting for two or three days!"
He was humble and respectful, expressing his overwhelming gratitude and politely declining the imperial physician's treatment of his injuries.
Shen Tangning and Chi Yan exchanged a glance. He took a few steps forward, a smile playing on his lips, and gently pressed down on the other man's shoulder. Yan Xingzhou's face paled instantly, but he dared not show any sign of discomfort, and endured the pain as he was forced to sit down.
"Young master, there's no need for such formalities. If you refuse to accept this, my wife will probably feel so guilty that she won't be able to sleep well tonight. Please, do her a favor and grant her wish."
Chi Yan seemed oblivious, his tone as languid as ever, yet with a hint of seriousness.
Are you kidding me? The reason he got injured was all Shen Tangning's doing!
Unable to resist, Yan Xingzhou sat stiffly on the couch, glancing at the person opposite him, when a sharp pain shot through his palm.
The imperial physician approached and gently reminded him, "Please take off your upper garment, sir."
Shen Tangning walked out discreetly, staring at the fallen curtains, a dark glint in her eyes.
She heard that the arrow wound was extremely dangerous, and that it was near the heart. Not to mention a few months of recuperation, it would probably leave a scar even after several years or more.
In just a few short months, the wound has not yet faded. If this person is truly the Third Prince, he would certainly not dare to reveal anything to his cousin.
Yan Xingzhou was caught in a dilemma. His fingers touched his collar but he hesitated to make a move. Under the watchful eyes of Yan Huai and Chi Yan, sweat gradually appeared on his forehead.
He was filled with suspicion and uncertainty. Had they already discovered his mistake? But that didn't make sense. He had been so careful in everything he did. When had he given himself away?
He didn't have time to think too much; his mind was in turmoil as he racked his brains for a way to cover it up.
He did indeed still have a clear arrow wound on his chest. The wound was deep, and the imperial physician said it would probably leave a mark for life. Yan Huai would definitely be suspicious if he saw it.
How could a lowly eunuch have arrow wounds on his body?
Seeing his hesitant look, Yan Huai's eyes curved slightly: "Your Excellency need not worry. Physician Zhong's medical skills are renowned even within the Imperial Hospital. Delaying treatment would be disastrous. Let the physician take a look quickly."
Yan Xingzhou lowered his head stiffly and explained timidly, "How could my lowly body possibly offend His Highness the Crown Prince and the Commander's eyes?"
"So that's what you're worried about." A hint of understanding flashed in Yan Huai's eyes, and his expression became even more lenient. "I don't mind."
Chi Yan gave a barely perceptible smirk, then suddenly realized what was going on and, as if to offer a helping hand, raised his hand: "Is Father-in-law injured and unable to move? How about I help you?"
His hand was almost touching Yan Xingzhou's collar. He instinctively flinched away. Chi Yan raised an eyebrow slightly, about to speak, when a voice came from outside:
"Mrs. Chi, what are you doing here?"
Shen Tangning glanced at Eunuch Fu a few steps away, a strange look flashing across her face, before she quickly smiled and said, "I've come to visit my benefactor. What brings you here, Eunuch?"
Eunuch Fu stepped forward, his whisk draped over his arm. He glanced at the words and hesitated, saying, "I heard that Xiao Hanzi was injured, and His Majesty summoned him for questioning."
"I see." She lowered her eyes to hide the darkness in them, her heart filled with sarcasm.
The timing is just too perfect.
She stepped aside, her expression composed: "Then, sir, please don't delay the task His Majesty has assigned."
He answered and entered, his surprised voice ringing out, "What are His Highness the Crown Prince and the Commander doing here?"
When Yan Huai saw him, the corners of his lips slowly curved up, and he explained his purpose for coming.
