"I also have a secret."
Looking into Shen Tangning's bewildered eyes, Chi Yan suddenly said.
She was already somewhat tipsy, but upon hearing this, she immediately perked up, held her breath, and looked at him.
Seeing her focused expression, Chi Yan turned his face away somewhat awkwardly, and after a long pause, he finally spoke:
"Actually... I come from another world, a world that may be thousands of years away from now."
After he finished speaking, he paused, looking slightly uneasy, and looked up to see her reaction.
Will she think he's an oddball?
Shen Tangning propped her chin on her hand, her expression clearly stunned. A look of bewilderment flashed across her eyes as she murmured to herself, "Several thousand years..."
Although she had long suspected the mystery surrounding Chi Yan, she never expected the answer to be like this.
He didn't belong here; he came from a far more distant place, a place she could never reach in her lifetime.
A moment later, those bright eyes looked over, revealing a hint of curiosity and excitement. "What will the world be like thousands of years from now?"
Her expression showed no wariness or suspicion, only pure curiosity, which eased Chi Yan's tense nerves. He smiled and patiently began to describe it to her vividly:
"Thousands of years later, the rise and fall of dynasties no longer exists; a new system has been established there..."
"In our area, men and women have equal status, and women can also earn money to support their families and live independently."
Shen Tangning listened intently, involuntarily drawn to the world he described—a place she had never seen in storybooks.
No wonder Chi Yan grew up to be such a person—humble, well-mannered, and dislikes being restrained; it turns out he was born in such a peaceful and tranquil environment.
No wonder he knows so many strange and unusual things...
She didn't miss the sparkle in Chi Yan's eyes. When he mentioned that world, his gaze was tender and nostalgic, hiding a deep longing.
Subtle facial expressions don't lie; he really liked that world.
Her eyelashes fluttered twice, and she rested her heavy head on her hand, asking as if casually:
"Then how did you get here?"
Chi Yan paused, a hint of melancholy rising in his eyes, his expression slightly dejected: "I think it was probably a sudden death caused by staying up all night to finish a paper, and then when I woke up, I was already here."
He was a senior at the time, juggling an internship with his graduation project. The job market was tough, and the company he was interning with didn't treat interns like human beings. As the lowest rung on the food chain, he had endless work to do every day, and he dared not speak out in order to get a permanent position.
Working overtime and then rushing to finish his thesis, the intense pressure took a toll on his health, and one night while he was working on his thesis, he finally passed away peacefully.
He died in the prime of his life.
She didn't know what a thesis was, so Chi Yan explained it to her again.
Shen Tangning's consciousness was somewhat hazy, but she still forced herself to stay awake, her mind wandering:
He must have been terrified and uneasy when he suddenly found himself in a strange world.
Although she had never experienced it, she inexplicably understood what it felt like.
Just like after her rebirth, looking around at everything, nothing had yet happened, and the people she loved were still there, but for her, that painful experience was real, as if it had happened yesterday.
