Chapter 8: My Father Forced Me (1/2)

That brat, how come he has no sense of propriety at all?

Seeing Chi Yan's smug look, as if he had someone backing him up and nothing was a problem, Madam Chi almost fainted from anger.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Shen Tangning snatched the feather duster from her hand and gently comforted her, "Mother, you have misunderstood your husband. Today's incident was due to my younger brother's impulsiveness. Your husband's decision not to hold it against him is already very magnanimous."

Chi Yan swaggered behind him, his feet seemingly floating on air.

Are all educated people so eloquent?

Looking at it this way, his wife isn't so fierce after all; she's beautiful, kind-hearted, gentle, and generous.

Tsk, it seems he really did get the better deal?

Madam Chi wasn't truly angry, but she still said, "That's still his fault! On the first day of our marriage, instead of staying home to be with you, he went off to fool around in that kind of place. Where does that leave you?"

She was also unsure, knowing that the two had not consummated their marriage the night before, and she couldn't help but worry.

What if the daughter-in-law is just temporarily out of her mind, and then kicks her own son when she comes to her senses?

Even as her own mother, she couldn't go against her conscience.

Her stupid son is only good-looking; otherwise, he's a complete mess. Any girl with normal taste would never be interested in him.

She wanted the two of them to develop a relationship, but her son was oblivious to it, so how could she not be anxious?

Shen Tangning, unaware of what her mother was thinking, chuckled softly, "Mother, you don't know, my husband just promised me that he would study hard in the future, focus on passing the imperial examinations, and strive to achieve the highest honors."

Chi Yan's smile suddenly froze.

ah?

Did he say the second half of the sentence?

He suddenly had a bad feeling.

Sure enough, Madam Chi's eyes lit up as she looked over: "Is this true?"

Before he could utter a sound, his mother rushed forward, grabbed his hand, and stood on tiptoe to rub and knead his handsome face: "My good son, I never knew you had such ambition!"

Chi Yan: ...

To be honest, he didn't realize it either.

Madam Chi was extremely excited. She had thought that persuading her son to study would be a long battle, but she did not expect him to be so sensible and even want to get her the top score in the imperial examination!

"My son, is there anything you'd like to eat lately? I'll have the kitchen make it for you!"

"It's getting warmer, so we need to cut a batch of summer clothes! We'll make Tang Ning's too!"

"By the way, replace all your writing brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones. Mother will get you the best ones. We're not short of money!"

The sudden show of concern made Chi Yan feel a little giddy; heaven knows how long it had been since he had received such treatment.

He smacked his lips: "I've been craving crab lately."

It's only late spring, and the crabs are still in their breeding season. Autumn is the best time to eat crabs.

But Madam Chi readily agreed: "Okay! What else would you like to eat?"

Shen Tangning looked at Chi Yan, who was completely bewildered by her coaxing, raised an eyebrow slightly, and curled the corners of her lips.

Her husband probably has never experienced the bitterness of being praised to death.

...

"Miss, the dowry has been brought back in its entirety, not a single item is missing."

Qin Mama's eyes held a smile. "You have no idea, when I was checking the register one by one, the Lady of the Marquis's face turned green!"

Shen Tangning smiled and said, "I've always trusted you to handle things, so please put them all in the storeroom."

Madam Chi Er never even considered taking her dowry. She even set aside a storeroom specifically for her to store her dowry, and there was only one key, which was held by her.

"Returning home the day after tomorrow..."
