Chapter 20

"Did you see that? He's so handsome!" Gu Lingling gets most excited when she sees a handsome guy, and she whispers excitedly as she tugs at the two people next to her. "Why is he in the girls' dormitory so late at night? Is he one of your classmates' brothers?"

Wen Yining was pulled and swayed.

Stiffly holding her phone, listening to the whispers around her about him, she met Li Changjing's gaze from afar. She opened her mouth, "...I, I..."

Li Changjing didn't speak on the phone, but the next second, Wen Yining watched as he opened the car door.

No, no, no!

Wen Yining's eyes widened and she subconsciously took two steps back, her heart almost stopping.

Ignoring Gu Lingling and Jiang Fengqing's reactions, she quickly turned around, phone in hand, and said in a trembling voice, "I'll wait for you under the overpass."

Afraid he would refuse, she hung up the phone immediately after speaking. Looking up, she saw him close the car door, staring in her direction, but he didn't get out.

She felt a great sense of relief.

"Yi Ning, what's wrong?" Jiang Fengqing turned to look at her in confusion. "Who were you calling? Did something happen?"

"Wenwen, are you alright?"

"Oh, it's nothing. I suddenly have something to do and I'm going out for a bit. You guys go back first." Ignoring how suspicious she looked, Wen Yining quickly found a shared bicycle and unlocked it by scanning the code.

Li Changjing watched her hurried, even slightly frightened, back as she walked away. His gaze swept indifferently over the crowd outside the window. He slowly rolled up the car window and leisurely straightened his collar.

"Wait until she's far away before driving off, don't make it too obvious."

The little girl is like a snail; while others take a step forward when touched, she takes a step forward when touched, or shrinks back when she's unhappy.

He had to push her a little, but not too hard.

When he was a child, the games he played most with his peers in the compound were military games. Two groups of people played two opposing camps. He knew when to attack, when to retreat, when not to pursue when the enemy was exhausted, and when to press the attack. He was very familiar with these tactics and used them against his colleagues after he started working. But now he was using them against a young girl who had just come of age.

But so what?

The second time he saw her upstairs that day, he thought, she must be his.

Wen Yining, covered in sweat, stopped the car and, panting, turned around to look for the eye-catching vehicle. After waiting for about two minutes, she saw the car drive over from the other side of the road and stop steadily in front of her. Then, she heard a soft sound as the car door unlocked.

The spotless black car windows clearly reflected her figure, the streetlights overhead, and the street scene behind her. She opened the car door and got in. The cool air conditioning inside the car rushed out, a stark contrast to the heat outside. The doors locked, and the car smoothly drove away.

After getting into the car, Wen Yining didn't look in Li Changjing's direction once. She stared at the road outside the windshield with lingering fear, suppressing her anger and remaining silent.

She shouldn't have blocked him that afternoon; she had almost forgotten how carefree he was.

The car was very quiet. Having ridden in his car so many times, she noticed that Li Changjing never played music in his car, nor did he ever use any car air fresheners or perfumes.

She sat ramrod straight, her thin, slender back stubbornly upright, craning her neck to wait for him to speak first. But he remained silent, though she could sense that from the moment she opened the car door, his gaze had been fixed on her. The car followed the flow of traffic through a street and onto the elevated highway.

In the end, Wen Yining was the first to give in and turned to look at Li Changjing, whom she hadn't seen for a week.

The car was dimly lit, and the towering streetlights on both sides of the road rushed past as the car sped by, casting flickering shadows on his face in the dim light.

Li Changjing also turned to look at her. He wasn't wearing his glasses today, and without them to cover his face, his entire face was clearly visible. He looked like a refined young master, waiting patiently for her to speak.

Wen Yining couldn't help but get angry when she recalled what had just happened. "You threatened me!"

Li Changjing smiled, his slender fingers toying with a black phone, slowly turning it around on the seat. "That's why you're sitting next to me now."

His shameless and self-righteous attitude left her speechless for a moment, and she could only glare at him angrily.

She tried to be honest with him, reasoning with him and appealing to his emotions. She looked at him earnestly and said softly, "I shouldn't have blocked you this afternoon, but I think my attitude is very clear. I just want to study hard, graduate smoothly, and live my peaceful life. We are from two different worlds and are not compatible in any way. It's best if things stay this way."

Li Changjing tilted his head and looked at her, his phone spinning on the seat. After she finished speaking, he said, "So that's why you've been avoiding me these past few days?"

She nodded in agreement, almost pleading, "Yes, I just want to go back to a simple employment relationship, or, to terminate that contract."

As soon as she finished speaking, she realized her mistake and secretly regretted it, fearing that he might do something angry if he heard her words.

Sure enough, he smiled slightly.

Wen Yining carefully raised her eyes to observe his expression, but she still couldn't understand his emotions. Now that the light was dim, she could see even less.

Li Changjing suddenly moved closer to her, sitting so close that his knees touched her legs. The warmth and touch were transmitted through the thin fabric of his pants, and she felt squeezed into a small space by his cool and domineering aura.

The distance felt too intrusive; her breath caught in her throat, and she instinctively shrank back.

Li Changjing stared intently at her face in the dim light. "Ningning, you've given so many reasons, but not a single one is because you don't like me."

Her heart skipped a beat. Even though she knew Li Changjing couldn't see clearly, Wen Yining's eyes instinctively darted away, looking at the neon lights rushing past the car window behind him, suppressing the intense bitterness in her eyes. "Feelings can change."

You may like something now, but you might not like it later.

Li Changjing spoke slowly and deliberately, pressing her relentlessly until she admitted it: "So, you admit that you like me."

Outside the window, the car turned onto another elevated road, the buildings on both sides showcasing the city's exorbitant land prices. One high-rise after another rose from the ground, towering beside the elevated road, their lights almost all on, creating a completely brightly lit scene. The car drove closer and closer, as if it were about to drive directly into the building, and the building seemed as if it would collapse on it at any moment.

It almost gives you a strong feeling of suffocation.

Wen Yining unconsciously gripped the hem of her dress, the sour feeling finally bursting forth from her eyes.

"Yes, I like you! I know it's wrong and I shouldn't, but I still fell for you. Are you satisfied now?"

After saying that, she couldn't hold back any longer and let tears soak her entire face.

Li Changjing paused, "Ningning, are you crying?"

Wen Yining didn't speak; even when she cried, it was silent.

The sound of rustling paper came from inside the car. Li Changjing was about to wipe her tears, but she turned her head away and tried to push his hand away, only to have her wrist forcibly gripped.

"Let me go!"

Ignoring her struggles, Li Changjing forcefully grasped both of her wrists and used his other hand to wipe away her tears.

Wen Yining no longer had the energy to dodge, so she let him do as he pleased.

His gesture of wiping away tears was earnest and gentle. If it weren't for the fact that his hand was still firmly pressing down on her wrist, and if his actions weren't so forceful, she might have truly mistaken him for a gentle person.

She looked at him with teary eyes, almost pleading, "Li Changjing, can you please let me go?"

His gentle movements paused, and at the same time, a streetlamp flashed past the window, illuminating his eyes. Li Changjing's long, narrow, and exquisite phoenix eyes looked at her quietly, his gaze seemingly calm and tolerant, but his eyes were full of coldness. He raised his hand and gently touched her hair, "Ningning."

Wen Yining understood.

She fell silent, her body gradually losing strength, and she slumped weakly into her seat.

She closed her eyes resignedly, "Li Changjing, let's be together."

The car circled around on the elevated highway of the North City First Ring Road and then turned back.

The car stopped where Wen Yining got in, and the driver got out.

Sitting in the car, Wen Yining's fair face and eyes were slightly red. She looked ahead as if she were making a last-ditch effort. "We need to make a three-point agreement: no interference in my life, no more threats to me, no more appearances at my school like this, and we absolutely cannot expose our relationship to my classmates and teachers, including Aunt Liu."

Upon hearing the last sentence, Li Changjing raised an eyebrow slightly but said nothing, nodding in agreement.

He's unusually good-tempered right now.

Seeing him nod, she breathed a sigh of relief, turned around to open the door, and said, "It's getting late, I'm going downstairs."

Her hand was suddenly pulled, and the warmth and touch made her turn around immediately, struggling instinctively.

Li Changjing looked down at her hand, his smile unchanged, though it seemed to have faded slightly. He didn't press her too hard and released her hand.

Give me your phone.

Wen Yining, not understanding why, took it out and handed it to him.

He held the screen up, "Password."

She typed in her password, lost in thought.

I went back like a sleepwalker, and only when I got to the dormitory building did I remember to take out my phone to see what he had just done. When I opened the contacts, I found that he had been pulled back from the blacklist.

She opened WeChat and found a new contact on her chat message page.

The profile picture is like a casually taken landscape photo. In the middle of winter, the ground is covered with snow, a tree as tall as a person is covered with snow, and the ground next to it is also covered with white snow. The sky and earth are the same color, and the air seems to be a clean and cold blue. Through the photo, it seems that you can smell the fresh air after the snow if you take a deep breath.

She clicked on it, and his WeChat name was just a simple hyphen "-". His Moments were completely blank, and his WeChat account was as cold and clean as he was.

Wen Yining looked up at the streetlights, then gazed at the dark sky, remembering how she and Li Changjing had ended up together.

Boyfriend and girlfriend.

Couple.

It's such a strange feeling; she doesn't feel like it's real at all.

I felt strange and uncertain, not knowing what would happen next. Subconsciously, I had a bad feeling, like the panic of standing on the edge of a cliff and about to jump off.

That's settled then.

She looked away, cheered herself up, and strode forward.

That night, Wen Yining thought that this was just a romance. She was only 18 years old, and this was just an insignificant journey in her long life, which would not affect her entire life.
