Chapter 6

Two newly sprouted poplar trees in the dormitory courtyard swayed in the spring breeze under the bright sunshine, casting swaying shadows on the old cement wall.

After finally finishing the reception, Wen Yining opened the dormitory door to find that her roommates were not there. Exhausted, she leaned against the stool for a while before getting up.

The dormitory was a bit messy, and the floor was obviously dirty, clearly because the person on duty hadn't cleaned it in time. Wen Yining glanced at the duty roster and saw that it was Gu Lingling's turn.

Gu Lingling is the only daughter in her family and is somewhat spoiled by her parents. Although she is lively and cheerful, she is like a little princess who never lifts a finger and always procrastinates on cleaning.

Wen Yining couldn't bear to watch, so she would sometimes help her clean.

She stood up, tidied up her things, changed the trash, and then mopped the floor. Looking at the clean and tidy dormitory, she breathed a sigh of relief.

When Wen Yining went downstairs to take out the trash, she bumped into her roommates Gu Lingling and Jiang Fengqing. Gu Lingling caught a glimpse of the trash in Wen Yining's hand, excitedly exclaimed, ran over, grabbed Wen Yining's arm, and rubbed against her arm while pouting, "Goddess, Goddess! My dear goddess! Did you clean for me again!?"

With her arm pulled across her chest by Gu Lingling, Wen Yining could clearly feel herself squeezing the soft, surging waves of Gu Lingling's breasts. Her arm stiffened, her ears suddenly burned, and she dared not move, half of her body stiff.

Although Wen's parents were happy and harmonious, they were both honest, taciturn and not good at expressing themselves, so Wen Yining was also an introverted person who was shy about expressing affection.

And perhaps because she seemed too quiet, she didn't have many close friends growing up. Every time she saw other people sleeping in the same bed with their best friends, holding hands and strolling down the street, she felt very envious of these intimate and beautiful things.

Although she envied her, she had gotten used to this kind of light-hearted social interaction. However, after entering university, she suddenly encountered Gu Lingling, who was lively, playful, and always ready to say sweet nothings. Even though she had been roommates with her for more than a semester, Wen Yining was still not used to it.

"Ahem." Wen Yining was pulled to the side, her ears red as she looked away and coughed, nodding. "It's okay, I don't have anything to do right now."

Gu Lingling clung to Wen Yining's arm like she had no bones, leaning half her body against her as she walked forward. Wen Yining was a head taller than her, but weighed about the same. She was being pulled halfway by Gu Lingling, but she didn't push her away. Her slender little body struggled to drag Gu Lingling forward.

"Wenwen is the best, I want to treat you to milk tea!"

Jiang Fengqing couldn't stand it anymore and complained, "Gu Lingling, you never clean up! Wen Yining has helped you so many times! You just take advantage of her good temper. You might as well ask her to take care of you in your old age."

"Hehehe!" Gu Lingling hugged even tighter, and Wen Yining felt like her arms were about to break. "I don't want to call you Mom, I want to call you Wife. I like Wenwen. My ideal type is someone like Wenwen who is fair-skinned, good at studying, has a good temper, is quiet and introverted, blushes easily when teased, but secretly dotes on me! Wife, wife!"

Several female students on the stairs looked over with smiles.

Wen Yining's face turned even redder. She coughed and smiled helplessly.

"Yes, yes, yes! That's the kind of helpless yet indulgent smile!"

Wen Yining: "..."

"..." Jiang Fengqing rolled her eyes.

Gu Lingling: "By the way, Wenwen, I heard that when you were receiving Senior Chen today, was there a super handsome guy with great charisma? I heard that you and Lin Haoran received him alone? Everyone who went there said he was like a celestial being descended to earth. Tell me what he looks like!"

Suddenly, the image of Li Changjing's enigmatic, half-smiling eyes flashed into Wen Yining's mind, causing her smile to freeze and her steps to pause almost imperceptibly for a moment.

Even if she resisted, she couldn't go against her conscience and say anything bad about Li Changjing.

"What does he look like?" Gu Lingling shook her. "They said his bone structure is amazing, but what exactly does a handsome guy with great bone structure look like?"

Under their gazes, Wen Yining hesitated for a moment, then mumbled, "She's quite fair-skinned, with a high nose bridge, but I didn't notice the rest."

Gu Lingling let out a disappointed "Ah".

On Thursday, Professor Xu taught the class. After class, Wen Yining was about to rush to the next classroom as usual when Professor Xu suddenly stopped her. Professor Xu held a very important position in the education field, but he was always kind and approachable. He was serious and easy to understand when he taught, and he was very fond of talent and took good care of Wen Yining.

After finishing her class, Wen Yining went to Professor Xu's office, completely bewildered.

This wasn't the first time she'd been to Professor Xu's office.

"Xiao Wen, please sit down." Professor Xu went to pour some water.

Wen Yining sat down, puzzled.

Professor Xu first asked about her studies, then about her life, which Wen Yining answered one by one. Professor Xu knew she was working part-time, but Wen Yining only replied that she was afraid it would affect her studies, so she resigned.

Professor Xu then recounted his journey of learning and working, starting from his first time leaving his hometown to take the college entrance exam when he was young.

He's talked about these things many times in class before, hasn't he?

Wen Yining was even more confused, but she listened attentively and patiently until Professor Xu earnestly talked about the female students who had "gone astray" in the school over the years.

Such incidents are common in every university, but some are exposed while others are well covered up. Two years ago, their school had a sensational suicide case where a female college student went astray, was kept by a wealthy man, was then abandoned, and couldn't bear the gossip, so she jumped off a building.

Wen Yining was incredibly clever. Upon hearing the teacher's explanation, she instantly understood what it meant. Her face turned pale, then red, and then deathly pale.

She knew that adding her name to something so prominent would definitely require the involvement of school leaders, and it would definitely...

Professor Xu was one of the organizers of the last event, so it's not surprising that he knew about it.

Wen Yining had always thought of herself as mature, composed, and fearless, unlike those immature teenagers who cared about how others perceived them. But now, facing the misunderstanding look of her beloved teacher, she suddenly realized that she was just a kid who had just turned 18 and wasn't as amazing as she thought.

I wonder what those deans and professors think of her.

Wen Yining from the School of Literature appears quiet, but she is quite shrewd and is being kept by someone outside the school.

Wen Yining, her face pale, raised her head and, with a tone neither humble nor arrogant, looked directly at Professor Xu without flinching, and explained the whole story.

She clenched her hands, and a feeling of suffocation rose in her heart as she thought of Li Changjing.

Professor Xu nodded. "I believe you, Xiao Wen. You are my student. I don't say I know you 100%, but I know about 70-80% of your character. I know you are a good kid. I'm just afraid you'll go astray, so I spoke up this time. As your teacher, please don't blame me for being so straightforward."

"He came here last time as Chen Yu's secretary. Do you know who this Mr. Li is?"

Wen Yining lowered her eyes and shook her head. She didn't know the specifics, but she knew that she couldn't afford to offend them, her school couldn't afford to offend them, and Chen Yu couldn't afford to offend them either.

Professor Xu sneered, "They must have an extraordinary background."

"He didn't contact any of the many people, only me. It seems he did his research beforehand."

Professor Xu pointed to the table, and Wen Yining looked over. On the table was an unfurled painting.

"They can be very generous."

"However, he still considered your reputation and did not make a fuss. This matter was handled by me, and only I know about it. His secretary even specifically hinted that I should keep quiet."

Wen Yining was stunned.

After leaving the office, Wen Yining frowned and walked to a quiet spot by the lake with complicated emotions. She sat down, calmed herself down, and checked the time.

My mom told me that my grandma had another check-up this morning, and the results must be in by now. She was thinking of calling home today to ask about it.

The call was answered after a while, and Wen Yining asked about her grandmother's condition.

Liu Jingzhen said cheerfully, "I didn't dare tell you before because I was afraid you would worry. The doctor said that your grandma's cerebral infarction was very serious and she might not be able to leave the intensive care unit. She was declared critically ill twice. Moreover, the doctor said that even if she was cured, there was a high probability that she would be in a vegetative state. Those few days scared me to death. Your dad and I were going to tell you so that you could rush back to see your grandma one last time."

Wen Yining knew nothing about any of this she was talking about, and every sentence made her legs weak, but hearing the cheerful tone in her voice, Wen Yining patiently asked, "And then?"

The father's voice can be heard in the background, "Don't scare the child."

Liu Jingzhen quickly said, "Don't worry, it's alright. The surgery is all done, and it was very successful. It was performed by an expert from Beicheng!"

Experts from the North City?

Wen Yining tilted her head in confusion.

From Liu Jingzhen's rambling conversation, she learned that an international expert from a major hospital in Beicheng had come specifically to perform the surgery, and surprisingly, they hadn't been asked to pay a fee for the surgery.

The Wen couple didn't know that the surgeon was an expert from Beicheng until they saw the car and welcome banner at the door and heard the doctor mention it.

Wen Yining felt something was wrong. After asking for the expert's name in detail, she opened Baidu to search for it. The screen emitted a cold white light, illuminating the complex expression on Wen Yining's face.

That expert was so famous that no prefix was needed; so famous that he was extremely busy; so famous that there was no way he could possibly come to their completely unrelated place to perform surgery for them free of charge.

The mastermind behind this is obvious.

So that's what it meant.

My parents were just surprised and puzzled, but they didn't think too much about it and just considered it a stroke of luck.

Even if Wen Yining herself was unaware, she would never have imagined that someone was manipulating things behind the scenes.

She didn't want to get involved with him, but this time she truly owed him a huge favor.

They used both threats and inducements, employing both soft and hard tactics.

A gust of wind blew by, and Wen Yining looked up. The sun had already set, and only the last rays of light remained on the horizon. One by one, the dim streetlights along the path lit up.

She suddenly realized that Li Changjing was a master at manipulating people's hearts, and his control and insight into people's minds frightened her.

She seemed transparent to him, yet he was the most unfathomable person she had ever met.

Since their last meeting, he hadn't appeared in her life for more than ten days, as if he had vanished into thin air.

She wondered if he had forgotten her because he was a busybody, or if he had a new target in mind, or if he had lost interest in her after their last meeting because he found her dull and boring.

Every result thrilled her, but she quickly interrupted the thought. She dared not think about it, for fear that if she did, he would appear.

But she always remembered the favor she owed him. She didn't want to get involved with him, but she really did owe him.

Several more days passed, and Li Changjing seemed to have truly forgotten about her.

Wen Yining has been busy with part-time jobs for the past ten days or so. Although her parents don't say anything, Wen Yining knows that given their family's financial situation, they can manage to support her through university, but her grandmother's hospitalization will require a large sum of money. This amount may not be much to others, but it is a huge sum for a family like theirs.

But the uncle refused to contribute a single penny.

Therefore, she needs a part-time job even more, so that she can at least take care of herself.

After staying in the hospital for another ten days or so, my grandmother was finally able to be discharged.

As soon as Grandma was discharged from the hospital, Mom had some free time and sent Wen Yining some homemade local specialties and some of her clothes.

Wen Yining went downstairs to pick up her package and helped her two other roommates carry it up as well.

While I was unpacking a package on the balcony, my phone suddenly rang.

Wen Yining held a utility knife in one hand and pressed the courier box with the other, then peeked out. On the screen was an unfamiliar number, with the location showing as Beicheng.

With scam calls and telemarketing calls rampant these days, Wen Yining hesitated for a moment and didn't answer, planning to wait for the second call before answering.

The phone rang once and then automatically hung up. Wen Yining waited a few seconds, but it didn't ring again.

It really is an advertisement.

Just as I finished unpacking the package and getting ready to go inside, that phone call suddenly came through again.

Wen Yining tentatively answered the phone, but no one spoke on the other end. However, she could vaguely hear some noisy voices and music coming from afar. It was hard to make out clearly, as if the person making the call was hiding in a quiet, deserted corner amidst the glitz and glamour of a noisy, decadent place.

Wen Yining had a premonition in an instant, and subconsciously slowed her breathing, tightening her grip on the phone slightly.

Li Changjing's voice and tone are very distinctive. His tone is clear, but his speech is slow and deep, giving off a sense of calm and nonchalant confidence.

They were already strangers, and after almost a month apart, Li Changjing's face and voice had become somewhat blurry. When Wen Yining suddenly heard his deep voice coming through the phone, she was momentarily dazed.

He didn't introduce himself, as if he was certain she knew who he was.

"Ningning, the moon is beautiful tonight, can you see it?"

Standing on the balcony, Wen Yining subconsciously looked up.

Spring night, no wind.

In the tranquil night sky, a bright moon hangs in the sky, radiating its clear and bright light, illuminating the white clouds that drift by and giving them a touch of color.

The cool night air, carrying the scent of grass and trees, slowly flowed in through the wide-open windows of the balcony. Wen Yining held up her phone, looking up at the moon, while she could hear Jiang Fengqing and Gu Lingling playing games together.

Take a gentle breath, and your nose will be filled with the tranquil and refreshing scent of spring.

The moonlight is indeed beautiful tonight.
