Chapter 63: The First to Lay Down Their Weapons

Chapter 63: The First to Lay Down Their Weapons

Chapter 63

Wen Yining's face turned pale, and she habitually whispered back at him, "What am I afraid of? I think you're the one who's afraid."

Li Changjing hugged her tightly, his voice trembling and hoarse as he admitted, "Yes, I was afraid."

Wen Yining was taken aback.

He didn't even retort to her sarcastic remarks; instead, he simply laid bare his inner fears and gave in.

She thought he would be angry and scold her for running away.

Looking up, she could only see his tense profile, his brows furrowed, and the blood from her body still on his face. She had never seen Li Changjing so distraught before.

He was genuinely afraid something might happen to her.

A strong feeling of bitterness welled up inside me, my heart felt like it had been twisted hard, and my eyes instantly welled up with tears.

Wen Yining buried her face in his neck, choking back tears as she said, "I'm fine, I'm really fine, don't be afraid."

Li Changjing hugged her even tighter.

At this moment, Yue Feng rushed over. He was horrified to see the two men covered in blood. "Sir, how are you? Where are you hurt?!"

"Go open the door!" Li Changjing carefully picked up Wen Yi and quickly walked towards the car.

Seeing that he didn't seem to be in any trouble, Yue Feng frowned, gritted his teeth, and quickly went to get the car.

Li Changjing gently placed Wen Yining in the back seat, straightened her skirt, closed the car door, and quickly walked to the other side to get in the car.

Fortunately, the morning rush hour had long ended, and with police cars clearing the way ahead, the road was clear and unobstructed, allowing the car to speed along the road.

Her calves were resting on the seat. The bleeding had almost stopped, but the blood from earlier had still soaked through his suit jacket, turning his black coat a dark stain. Some of the blood had also stained the seat, and the car was filled with a strong smell of blood, which was almost unbearable to smell after a while.

Li Changjing held Wen Yining tightly, his face tense. The thought that this was Wen Yining's blood made the smell of blood feel like sharp knives drilling into his brain, cutting his nerves again and again.

Wen Yining leaned against Li Changjing's chest, watching the street scene rushing past the window and the sound of police sirens. She suddenly remembered when they weren't together yet. Back then, she had a crush on him and didn't want to take leave casually. She endured menstrual cramps to go to class just to see him, but the pain almost made her faint. It was during that time that he carried her and took her to the hospital.

She rarely reminisces about the past, so this sudden thought evoked a sense of the swift passage of time and the vicissitudes of life.

She sighed silently without realizing it.

Li Changjing, who was focused on Wen Yining, immediately lowered his head and gently kissed her between the eyebrows. He then held her in his arms and comforted her softly, "Don't be afraid, we'll be at the hospital soon. Everything is ready there. It should just be a superficial injury, nothing serious. Don't be afraid."

He had lost his temper for a moment, but once he calmed down and his thoughts became clear, he immediately determined that her injuries could not possibly have damaged her internal organs or bones; they were merely external wounds.

Wen Yining nodded.

If she had encountered this situation herself, she would have been somewhat flustered, but because she knew he was nearby, she was never afraid from beginning to end.

His aura was so reassuring; it was as if with him around, she wouldn't have to be afraid of anything, no matter how big the problem, because she knew that Li Changjing would handle everything perfectly and properly.

But this time, Li Changjing seemed even more afraid than she was.

For the first time in a long time, Wen Yining gently and proactively took his hand, her voice weak, "Yes, I'm not afraid, and you shouldn't be afraid either."

Her cold, blood-stained hand gently grasped his, like a feather. Li Changjing was startled and gripped her hand tightly in return.

They arrived at the hospital quickly, and Wen Yining was immediately taken into the operating room.

The hospital leaders who rushed over were shocked to see Li Changjing covered in blood. "Secretary Li, why don't you go get checked out too?"

Yue Feng nodded, "You should still go get checked out."

If anything were to happen to Li Changjing, he really couldn't bear the responsibility.

"I'm fine." Li Changjing raised his hand, which was covered in red and white marks, with traces of blood still wet on his fingertips—all of it Wen Yining's blood.

He clenched his fist, his voice low and hoarse, "It's all her blood."

Standing next to Li Changjing, Yue Feng watched his expression and felt a pang of anxiety in his heart.

From the moment these two got together, including their first meeting, he had been watching them go through it all. He watched Li Changjing go from being completely at ease to being hopelessly infatuated, and now he knew Li Changjing's feelings for Wen Yining. Even as an outsider, he felt a pang of heartache seeing so much blood, let alone Li Changjing himself.

Li Changjing had no patience to deal with this, so he rejected the suggestion and stood guard at the door, chasing away all the people who were gathered around.

The others rushed over after receiving the news, bringing clothes. Yue Feng said in a low voice, "Sir, why don't you change your clothes first?"

He was covered in blood on his body, face, and hands, a shocking sight. And from the moment he left until now, he hadn't even bothered to wash the blood off his hands, having stayed right there the whole time.

Li Changjing didn't respond to him. Looking at the tightly closed white door, he suddenly said, "Don't you think it's too much of a coincidence?"

Yue Feng instantly understood his meaning and was startled. He dared not answer.

Li Changjing didn't expect an answer. After a pause, he suddenly looked up, a shadow crossing his eyes. "The surgery hasn't started yet?"

"Not yet. They will definitely contact you once the inspection is complete."

Li Changjing whispered a message to Luo Hao, who was standing guard nearby.

Both of them were stunned after hearing this. Luo Hao turned to look at the operating room, nodded, and quickly left.

When Wen Yining woke up, she looked at the ceiling above her head, still not fully conscious, feeling as if she had slept for a century.

She seemed to have many dreams, dreaming of the past, with fragments of the past flashing through her mind.

After the anesthesiologist and surgeon confirmed that she was truly awake, they stopped personally watching over her, got up and left, and arranged for dedicated medical staff to look after her.

"You're awake. You can leave in a little while. Don't worry, it's just a minor bandaging surgery. Our vice president performed the operation himself, and it was very successful," a round-faced woman wrapped up tightly, with only her face showing, whispered to Wen Yining.

Wen Yining blinked slowly. "Where is the person who brought me here?"

The round-faced woman smiled knowingly at her, "When you wake up, ask him, 'Your boyfriend,' right? Don't worry, he cares about you a lot. He's been waiting at the door the whole time. I heard that several of our hospital leaders tried to persuade him to leave, but he wouldn't budge. He should still be at the door now. Your relationship must be very good, right?"

Still a little dazed, Wen Yining smiled subconsciously, but the next second she realized what was happening and her smile faded. She slowly replied, "Yes, he cares about me a lot."

The round-faced woman clicked her tongue twice, "Sigh, I'm so envious."

Not long after, Wen Yining was wheeled out. As soon as the door opened, Yue Feng and the others immediately surrounded her. "Miss Wen, you're awake!"

Wen Yining's gaze swept across their faces, and she subconsciously looked for that familiar and reassuring figure. Turning her head, she saw Li Changjing making a phone call. Upon hearing the sound, he immediately hung up the phone and strode over.

She was undergoing surgery inside, and someone came out to report on each step of the process to him, so Li Changjing knew her condition better than she did.

Li Changjing looked at her face. Because of excessive blood loss, even though she had received a blood transfusion, her face was still as pale as paper, as if it would break at the slightest touch. She looked both adorable and pitiful.

Li Changjing gently held Wen Yining's hand and tidied her hair at her temples. "How are you feeling?"

Upon seeing Li Changjing's face, Wen Yining's heart immediately calmed down. She smiled and, seemingly unrelated to the question, said to him, "Li Changjing, I feel like I've had so many dreams."

Following her wandering thoughts, Li Changjing gently asked in a soft voice, "What did you dream about?"

Wen Yining thought for a moment, her voice very soft and weak, "So many, so many, I forgot."

Li Changjing smiled and said, "Okay, let's not think about it for now. We can think about it later, okay?"

Wen Yining turned to look at Li Changjing, feeling as if she had traveled through time.

In the past, they either didn't speak at all, or if they did, they would only say a few words and then start arguing.

He hadn't spoken to her so gently in a long time.

The hospital bed was taken into the elevator and then pushed into the ward.

As soon as I went in, a bunch of doctors came over and gave me a bunch of instructions.

Wen Yining was too dizzy to listen. She stared blankly at the buttons on Li Changjing's clothes. Anyway, with Li Changjing around, she could be a carefree couch potato without having to worry about anything. He would arrange everything, and with him around, she wouldn't have to worry about anything.

After the doctor left, a nurse came to administer an IV. Once they were all done and left, the ward immediately became quiet, leaving only the two of them.

Li Changjing felt a slight itch on her lips, frowned, and gently touched her dry lips. "You can't drink water now. You have to wait 6 hours."

Wen Yining shook her head. "I'm not thirsty."

She received a lot of fluids in the operating room, but she wasn't thirsty at all; now her mouth tastes like medicine.

As he spoke, there was a knock on the door.

Li Changjing withdrew his hand. "Come in."

Yue Feng walked in quietly. "Sir, have you found a caregiver? Shall we have her come in now?"

"Come in."

A woman in her forties, dressed in a clean and neat caregiver uniform, walked in.

Yue Feng looked at Li Changjing, "Sir."

Li Changjing glanced at him, saw the caregiver looking after Wen Yining, paused, then stood up and left.

Walking into the other rooms of the suite, Yue Feng closed the door. "They called and confirmed it was an accident. This person is just an ordinary person with a heart condition that he's had for over ten years. It just suddenly flared up, and Miss Wen happened to be there..."

The bodyguard who went with them in the morning, under Li Changjing's instructions, had been following the driver since morning and called Yue Feng in the afternoon.

Li Changjing was suspicious. "Keep an eye on him, try to get more information out of him, and see if he does anything unusual next."

"yes."

The caregiver applied lip balm to Wen Yining's lips. Wen Yining was not used to this kind of care and wanted to do it herself, but she couldn't refuse, so she could only let the caregiver do it while she was uncomfortable.

The aunt asked, "Was that your husband by the bed just now?"

Wen Yining was taken aback, suppressing the inexplicable disappointment in her heart, "No."

"Oh, I'm so sorry, I thought you two were a married couple."

Wen Yining forced a smile.

Li Changjing went back, glanced at the room, had the nanny explain the precautions, took the things from her, and then told her to go to another room to rest.

Wen Yining had just breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Li Changjing holding a cotton swab, preparing to do it himself. She immediately refused, "My leg is injured, not my hand. I can do it myself. Besides, I'm already healed, so I don't need to do this anymore."

Li Changjing stared at her moist, full lips, his throat moved, he nodded, and surprisingly put down his cup.

Wen Yining was somewhat surprised.

The two of them were left alone in the ward again.

Li Changjing put her hand under the blanket. "The bone wasn't broken, but the wound was a bit deep, so we stitched it up."

Wen Yining nodded.

The scene was one way in the morning, but in the blink of an eye, it turned into this. The marriage certificate was not obtained in a way that Wen Yining never expected.

This happened because she suddenly broke away from him and ran downstairs this morning. She had been waiting for Li Changjing to make sarcastic remarks about her, but he hadn't said a word about it yet.

How long was I inside?

Three hours.

"By the way, how's the driver?"

Li Changjing answered all questions with his good temper, "The driver has been taken to the hospital. He had a heart attack and accidentally hit you. He's fine now, don't worry."

She was really unlucky; perhaps it meant that even God was preventing them from getting their marriage certificate.

Li Changjing took her phone from a drawer and handed it to her. "I've already asked the school for leave, and I've also notified your friends. They might come to see you tomorrow. Don't worry about the school. Once you're discharged in a few days, I'll have someone come home to teach you."

Li Changjing gently tucked her hair behind her ear. "Don't worry, take good care of your injury."

Li Changjing's sudden change in attitude and his easygoing manner left Wen Yining feeling somewhat uneasy. It was as if one of the two sides, who had been holding swords, had suddenly lowered their weapons, leaving her feeling somewhat lost.

Author's Note: The ending was already difficult to write, and then I was coincidentally very busy three times. This morning I even cut my index finger. What a run of bad luck! [Clown] For everyone's reading experience, please wait until the ending is complete before reading. There aren't many chapters left anyway.
