Chapter 8

Given Li Changjing's status, the people she associates with are not ordinary people, and the topics they discuss are likely things she shouldn't be listening to.

She nodded quickly and got out of the car.

Li Changjing turned his head, but Wen Yining had already gotten out of the car. She didn't talk to him or turn around. She walked forward for more than ten meters until she reached the door of a shop on the side of the road and then stopped. It seemed that if she could go in, she would have liked to walk into other people's shops, which made the owners inside look at her frequently.

She stood in the bright sunlight, her small face with fair skin and clear, bright eyes.

She stood very straight, with a slender and delicate figure. Her long, soft, black hair hung down to her chest, turning golden in the sunlight. She looked soft and innocent, with a quiet and well-behaved student air about her.

With his hands in his coat pockets, he turned his head and stared intently at the people selling recyclables on the roadside, avoiding their gaze completely, as if trying to escape at all costs.

Li Changjing stared at her through the car window for a while, seemingly lost in thought.

As soon as Wen Yining got out of the car, she noticed the old man collecting recyclables by the roadside. Even though her own life wasn't much better than his, seeing elderly people like him always reminded her of her grandparents and maternal grandmother.

The thought of elderly people having to work so hard fills me with a sense of helplessness and bitterness.

The bodyguards quickly approached, and Wen Yining lowered her eyes and looked away.

There was a convenience store just a dozen meters away, but the bodyguard took four or five minutes to walk there, and the two didn't exchange a single word the whole way.

As they walked down the street, the bodyguard casually went into a convenience store. Wen Yining didn't go in; she waited at the door for a long time. The bodyguard came out empty-handed, but Wen Yining still didn't ask anything or even glance at him. The bodyguard raised an eyebrow and looked at her.

Walking to the car and looking at the tinted windows, she didn't dare to open the door rashly. It wasn't until the bodyguard opened the back door and gestured for her to get in that she was sure Li Changjing had finished his call.

Wen Yining got into the car, and Li Changjing turned to look at her profile. After a while, he spoke his first words after getting in the car, his pleasant voice a little hoarse: "Why have you lost weight? Have you been very busy lately?"

"..."

Wen Yining choked.

Every time he spoke, it was unexpected. This person seemed unable to speak normally; every word he uttered carried an ambiguous feeling, and every word challenged her sense of security, making her ears burn and her heart feel as if it had shrunk into a tight ball.

Yet his tone was casual and natural.

She began to wonder if it was because playboys and sons of high-ranking officials were used to flirting, or if she was just being too sensitive and conservative.

She nodded, speaking as if addressing a superior or elder: "Thank you for your concern. It's alright, not particularly busy."

Li Changjing glanced at her with a half-smile, making her feel completely exposed in front of him, as if his little thoughts had been seen through.

The car drove away from the city to a resort in the suburbs. It was unclear whether there was no one there to begin with or if he had cleared the place out, but apart from the staff, there were only the two of them in the huge resort.

Wen Yining looked left and right, nervously clutching the hem of her clothes.

The desolate wilderness is full of his men; what if he…

I didn't have time to think too much.

It was the height of spring, and the mountain scenery was beautiful. The sun was shining brightly, and the trees all over the mountain were turning a new green. Unknown wildflowers stretched their branches and bloomed profusely.

When Li Changjing said "walk," he really just meant "walk," taking gentle wooden steps up to the top of the mountain.

The bodyguards followed at a distance behind the two.

The mountain wasn't high, and they reached the summit quickly. Li Changjing hadn't spoken a word to her the whole way.

Wen Yining stood behind Li Changjing, looking at his back. He stood by the railing with his back to her, looking at the scenery below the mountain. The mountain wind blew by, making his clothes flutter.

He was only wearing a shirt, with the cuffs rolled up, revealing his slender yet strong wrists.

The bright sunlight shone on his profile and reflected off his clear glasses, making his face appear white and blurry, obscuring any expression.

Wen Yining followed his gaze and could see a green lake at the foot of the mountain, the pale yellow roofs of the villa buildings, and in the distance, the North City under the sun.

Li Changjing stood with his back to her for a long time, without saying a word to her.

At this moment, all his refined and elegant demeanor vanished, revealing a cold and distant air about him.

A sense of alienation, indifference, and undisguised coldness belonging to those in positions of power.

It was as if he had his own world, a layer of invisible barrier separating him from himself.

Even though he was standing right in front of her, they seemed to be very, very far apart.

Standing behind Li Changjing, Wen Yining looked at his back and suddenly felt that she was no different from the bodyguards following at a distance.

It was as if he wasn't the one who had just told her she had lost weight, gently called her Ningning, and asked her how she was doing in the car.

I thought being alone with him would be a tough battle, but it turned out to be so easy.

Wen Yining breathed a sigh of relief and silently prayed that he would stay like this until they got back and not speak to her at all.

Li Changjing stood there for a long time without turning around to look at her or speaking to her.

It wasn't until they reached the bottom of the mountain that he seemed to remember her. He turned around, a gentle smile curving his lips, and asked her as always, "Are you tired?"

With that smile, all his indifference vanished, and he transformed back into that refined young nobleman, as if the person who had been aloof just moments before was not him at all.

Sometimes close, sometimes distant; sometimes near, sometimes far.

Wen Yining shook her head.

We didn't stay long before heading back.

The street scene outside the window is becoming more and more familiar; I'm almost at school.

Staring at the streetscape and trees rushing past, she mustered her courage several times before turning to look at Li Changjing. Her clear black and white eyes were calm and firm: "The doctor said that my grandmother's condition was very serious. Given the medical technology at the time, her chances of survival were slim. So I am really, really grateful to you."

Li Changjing turned his face and stared at her leisurely for a few seconds, gesturing for her to continue.

Wen Yining's posture was very reserved, completely different from his casual and relaxed demeanor. Li Changjing's every move and gesture was very elegant, like a noble young master raised in a wealthy family, casual and natural but very handsome.

She clasped her hands together on her knees, feeling that her eagerness to distance herself made her seem like an ingrate.

"I am very grateful to you, but I don't have the ability to repay this favor. The only thing you want... I can't do. So, let's not see each other again. But I will remember this favor, and if there is anything I can do to help you, I will definitely do it."

Li Changjing raised an eyebrow.

The bodyguard, who had been like an invisible man, glanced at Wen Yining in the mirror and subtly slowed down the car.

Li Changjing thought she would continue to play the ostrich and try to appease him, but to his surprise, she directly rejected him this time.

Countless people have pulled strings and tried every means to meet him and become acquainted with him, but this is the first time in his life that someone has avoided him like the plague.

After Wen Yining finished speaking, she held her breath and watched Li Changjing's reaction.

He had no expression, revealing neither joy nor anger. He just watched her quietly for a while, then tapped his pale fingertips on the seat. Suddenly, he asked, knowing the answer already, "What do I want?"

Wen Yining opened her mouth, “…”

He suddenly leaned closer to her, his seemingly refined and handsome eyes, which were actually unfathomable, staring at her through his glasses. A wave of oppressive pressure washed over her. "Ningning, tell me, what do I want?"

Her face flushed slightly, and her usually calm eyes flickered with panic as she avoided his gaze.

"Do I want you?"

"boom!"

Wen Yining felt her entire face burn up. She pursed her lips and turned her face away from him, even her fair ears turned pink.

She wanted to say something, but when she opened her mouth, she had nothing to say.

She turned her head to the side, revealing delicate and elegant features, a fair and slender neck, and a few strands of soft, black hair falling onto her fair neck, making her stunningly beautiful.

Li Changjing stared at her profile for a few seconds, then stopped pressuring her and sat back down.

"I told you, it's just a small thing, you don't need to keep thinking about it, just consider it as you've already paid it back."

However, he avoided mentioning her earlier rejection.

Wen Yining didn't dare to continue. Even though Li Changjing acted very gentlemanly, she hadn't forgotten the personalities of those young masters. She was afraid of provoking his rebellious emotions and that he might force himself on her.

The car slowly came to a stop at the spot where I had picked her up that afternoon.

Wen Yining didn't dare look at his expression, staring straight ahead at the back of the passenger seat in front of her.

Li Changjing chuckled lightly, neither refuting her words nor getting angry. Instead, he seemed quite interested: "Ningning, this is the fourth time you've rejected me."

Wen Yining's heart sank heavily.

After getting off the bus, she walked dejectedly towards the school, almost bumping into someone in the process.

Inside the car.

Li Changjing lit a cigarette and turned his head to stare at the girl's back.

The bodyguard glanced at his expression and, quite perceptively, didn't start the car and leave.

"Miss Wen is very afraid of you."

After crossing the road, Wen Yining's slender and tall figure was exposed to the sunlight without any buildings to block it. It was dazzling, as if she was covered in gold. Her neck was slender, and her wrists were delicate and soft, as if they would break at the slightest touch.

Li Changjing narrowed his eyes and a faint smile appeared on his lips. "Her attitude is very soft, but the things she does are increasingly ruthless."

From the very beginning, she dared to turn around and run away. He found someone to transfer her to a different position, but she resigned immediately without saying a word. He went to the school to wait for her, and she made up a bunch of lies to deal with him. Now that he can't fool her anymore, he's starting to confront her directly. Every time, she finds various reasons and refuses him with a soft attitude.

This was the fourth time she had rejected him.
