Chapter 40 Because He Met Me
One of the four great churches on the Rhine, the city of Somme.
Corey closed his eyes and tapped the table with his fingers, making it impossible for the waiter beside him to guess what the archbishop was thinking. Corey had been in this state since he brought the news of Knight Commander Kelsey's death half an hour ago, as if he was asleep.
It was unknown how much time had passed, so long that the waiter was about to fall asleep standing, when Corey suddenly spoke up: "So, it was Uru who killed Kelsey?"
The waiter woke up from his trance and subconsciously raised his head. He found that Corey had opened his eyes and was looking at him. When he raised his head, his eyes met Corey's.
At this moment, the waiter felt as if he had fallen into an icy cave.
Corey's eyes seemed to have an inexplicable power. Just by making contact with that gaze, he felt that all the negative emotions in his heart were magnified at this moment, magnified again and again, to the point that he could hardly stand and staggered and almost fell.
Fortunately, Corey quickly looked away, allowing the waiter to stand firm.
The waiter didn't understand what kind of power that was. He just felt that he had an illusion because he didn't get enough rest, so he quickly apologized: "Sorry, I'm sorry, Bishop Corey, I..."
"Answer my question." Corey neither pursued nor explained, but simply repeated his previous words, "Kelsey, was it Uru who killed him?"
"According to the report from the Knights' adjutant - yes." The waiter knew that Corey hated ambiguous answers, so he said in a serious tone, "No one else was found at the scene."
"That's strange." Corey muttered, "Whether it's [Forbidden Item 24] or [Forbidden Item 29], the rules they contain are not combat rules. With Uru's level, how on earth can he defeat Kelsey?"
The waiter didn't answer because he knew Corey wasn't asking him either.
After thinking in silence for a while, Corey spoke again: "That is to say, we lost a Knight Commander, several knights, and a priest... After paying such a high price, we not only failed to recover the [Forbidden Item] in the hands of a rebellious little priest, but we can't even figure out whether the [Forbidden Item] is twenty-four or twenty-nine, right?"
The waiter broke out in a cold sweat instantly. Although he knew that this matter had nothing to do with him and Bishop Corey would not vent his anger on him, the pressure released by Bishop Corey at this moment was indeed not something a small waiter like him could bear.
After all, Corey is a bishop and can better bear the existence of "God's gift".
"Whatever." Finally, Corey sighed softly, and the waiter immediately felt the pressure on him dissipate. "It's okay if I failed. Even though it's Visas' body part, it's not that important after all. It's okay if I didn't get it. I just hope it doesn't fall into the hands of troublesome people."
The waiter asked curiously, "Isn't it in Father Uru's hands now? Why do you say..."
Corey glanced at him and said calmly, "Do you think he can keep it?"
The waiter choked suddenly.
"That finger will eventually fall into someone else's hands." Corey thought for a while, and then said calmly, "So, we are not without a chance. Uru was able to kill Kelsey, which means he has other means besides the finger. I hope these means can allow him to live a little longer, until... we finally find him."
The waiter asked, "Then why don't we continue to send two teams of knights into the town of Petain? Father Uru is likely still stranded in the town, right?"
"There is no time." Corey shook his head. "We have kept that town secret for too long. The other three major religions have also set their sights on that place because of Visas' body parts. Now everyone is watching. We cannot let more people die in that town."
Then, Corey paused, and then spoke slowly.
"'God's Choice' has ended, and 'God's Grace' should come."
…
"God's grace! God's grace!"
"The Rhine God has mercy on the world and brings food to the hungry believers!"
"Praise the Rhine God!"
Two days later, in the small town of Petain, everything changed.
New priests entered the town with knights in shining armor. They pushed cart after cart of food and reawakened the town that had been silent for many days.
The people who still had a bit of strength left rushed over like crazy and roughly snatched the food from the hands of the new priests, but the priests did not show any dissatisfaction or anger. They had kind and gentle smiles on their faces, and they really looked like messengers sent by the God of the Rhine.
They will end famine,
They will restore order.
When they come, everything is fine.
The little boy held his silly sister's hand and stood blankly on the street, staring at the hopeful scene in front of him, without moving for a long time.
A priest walked up to him, slowly squatted down, and spoke with compassion: "Oh, poor child, how come you are so hungry? Is this your sister?"
The little boy nodded slowly.
"It's so pitiful. This world is so unfortunate." The priest sighed softly, and then asked the little boy, "Do you want to enter the Rhine? Then let me take care of you and your sister?"
As the priest spoke, he reached out and gently stroked the little boy's head.
"From now on, I won't have to go hungry anymore... What do you think?"
No more...starving?
Looking at the priest in front of him, who was dressed in bright and beautiful clothes, had a kind face and made a promise to him, the little boy subconsciously agreed.
But at this moment, the image of another priest suddenly flashed through his mind.
He was dressed in rags, he was swearing, he punched and kicked himself, but...
The little boy slowly shook his head at the priest in front of him, which surprised the priest. He obviously did not expect the little boy to refuse. But before he could ask, the little boy trotted away with his silly sister.
And this scene was seen by someone not far away.
"Don't you want to go and meet him?" Bai Wei said calmly, "He probably won't report you, right?"
“Ahem… no… ahem, it’s not necessary.” Ulu, who was wrapped in a black robe, coughed up blood and shook his head slowly: “He and I… are not familiar with each other.”
"Yeah, you don't even know his name." Bai Wei asked, "Don't you feel regretful?"
"Regret...where is it?"
"Is this the first time in your life that you risked your life to save someone? Is this the end?"
Wulu was silent for a while and said, "I saved him just to prove one thing."
"Prove you're not a bug?"
"No, I'm the bug."
Bai Wei was a little surprised to see Wu Lu admit that he was a bug. This was the first time Wu Lu surprised him: "Then what do you want to prove?"
"I became a bug because I met Luggie."
Ulu took a final, deep look at the little boy, lowered the brim of his black robe, and turned away.
"But he became a flower because he met me."
It’s finally reached 100,000 words, and it can finally be recommended.
The performance of this book was quite unexpected to me. At the beginning, no one read it, and I wanted to give it up and write something more lighthearted (because this was the first time I wrote this type of article, and I didn’t know what was good and what was bad). But fortunately, more and more people read it, and although the performance was not very good, the evaluation was still quite high, which made me a little nervous.
Well, I have a lot to say, but I'll leave it in the comments. I hope the recommendation is good, and I hope everyone likes this story, that's it.
