Chapter 79 Chinese New Year

Qin Luo grabbed a handful of copper coins.

He took Jin Yan and left Longhu Temple.

The mountain is bathed in sunshine, tender buds are sprouting on the trees, and water droplets are dripping from time to time; all things are poised to burst forth.

A gentle breeze caressed my face.

Qin Luo and Jin Yan enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery.

Outside Baiyun Town, the City God Temple is bustling with worshippers. Local residents find it convenient, so many people come to the temple to offer incense and pray for blessings, making it a crowded place.

Upon seeing Qin Luo, Lu Xian took the initiative to greet him, bowing respectfully and saying warmly, "Immortal Master!"

The surrounding people could not see Lu Xian.

"Senior Lu, I heard you've been very busy lately."

Lu Xian nodded and said with a smile, "Every winter is very busy. It should be much easier after the cold snap in spring."

"Senior Lu, you go ahead with your work. We need to go to Baiyun Town to buy some things," Qin Luo said with a smile.

"Please take care, Immortal Master."

Lu Xian thought he was there to inspect the work.

Baiyun Town.

The people decorated their homes with lanterns and colorful decorations.

Children were playing hopscotch on the street, and a little girl with two braids handed Jin Yan candy.

"Little monkey, here's some candy for you."

Jin Yan was at a loss. Only after seeing his senior brother nod did he extend his hand, "Thank you, young benefactor."

You're welcome!

The little girl continued playing hopscotch.

Jin Yan put the candy in his pocket. He knew his junior sister liked candy and wanted to save it for her.

"Master, could you please write a '福' (fortune) character for me?"

"OK."

Qin Luo readily agreed.

The fat butcher selling pork took out a square piece of red paper.

Qin Luo picked up his brush and wrote a beautiful "Fu" character. The fat butcher who sold pork was very pleased when he saw it. "Immortal Master, don't go yet. I'll cut you two pounds of meat."

"It was nothing, don't mention it."

"No, you wait."

Qin Luo saw the pork bones on the stall and said, "If nobody wants these bones, you can give them to me, but forget about the pork."

"All right!"

The fat butcher wrapped the pig bones in straw paper and said, "Master, next time you buy pork, I'll give you a 20% discount."

Qin Luo nodded with a smile.

There weren't many vendors still operating on the street. Qin Luo found a flour shop and bought a pound of wheat flour and a pound of glutinous rice flour, which cost him a total of twenty-three coins. Prices were much higher than usual.

"Senior brother, what are you buying these for?"

"It's Chinese New Year, so we have to eat something good. I'll cook you a bowl of noodles tonight, and we'll have glutinous rice balls tomorrow morning."

"Uh-huh."

Jin Yan grinned foolishly.

This was his first time celebrating the Chinese New Year.

"Immortal Master! It's been a long time!"

An elderly man in a red robe approached.

Qin Luo saw the old man and chuckled, "Old Chen, the incense shop must be doing very well today. How come you still have time to stroll around outside?"

"The shop is being looked after by an apprentice, but the Immortal Master hasn't visited the incense shop in a long time, and I miss him very much."

"Then I'll go take a look around now."

"Immortal Master, please."

Chen Changshou beamed as he led the way. Ever since Qin Luo drew the house-protecting talisman for him, Longhu Temple hadn't bought any incense or candles from him.

Old Chen's Incense Shop.

Qin Luo walked into the incense shop. The Taoist temple still had many incense sticks and candles. He saw a large red lantern displayed high up and asked, "Old Chen, how much is this lantern?"

"Take it if you like, Immortal Master."

"Don't worry, I have money on me."

"These lanterns are cheap, only six coins."

"Then bring two cups."

Chen Changshou took down two large red lanterns.

Qin Luo placed the twelve copper coins in a row on the counter. "Mr. Chen, I'll come back to patronize your business again in the future."

"Immortal Master, please remember to visit often!"

Chen Changshou watched them walk away.

Qin Luo still had some copper coins in his hand. "Junior brother, is there anything you want to eat? I'll buy it for you."

Jin Yan shook his head, his smile simple and honest, "Senior brother, the fruit I want to eat hasn't come out yet."

Qin Luo saw an old woman selling red bean paste cakes for ten coins a pound. Qin Luo bought a pound of red bean paste cakes and then used the remaining money to buy a little over a pound of red dates.

"Junior brother, you should try it."

"Okay, senior brother."

Jin Yan picked up a piece of red bean paste cake, ate it, and then tilted his head back and said, "It's so sweet, Junior Sister should like it."

Qin Luo gently stroked Jin Yan's head, "There is an elderly man living alone in the mountains. I'm going to take him there."

"I understand."

Jin Yan suddenly realized.

He thought his senior brother bought it for his junior sister.

In the mountains, people were burning paper money at gravesites. Jin Yan asked curiously, "Senior brother, what are they doing?"

Qin Luo looked at the people in the mountains, "They are worshipping their ancestors! Praying for their blessings!"

Jin Yan nodded heavily.

Qin Luo and the others arrived at the earthen house piled with firewood, where Dong Jisheng was cultivating wasteland near his home.

"Old Dong."

Qin Luo shouted with a smile.

Upon seeing Qin Luo, Dong Jisheng quickly put down his hoe and rushed over to greet him, "Immortal Master, what brings you here?"

Qin Luo handed over red bean paste cakes and red dates, a bright smile on his face. "Mr. Dong, Happy New Year! This is a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it."

"I can't accept this."

Dong Jisheng couldn't refuse. He accepted the gift from Qin Luo, unsure how to repay it. "Immortal Master, there are some newly planted bok choy in the field. Please pick some to take home and eat."

"Then I won't stand on ceremony."

Qin Luo came to the vegetable garden next to the earthen house, where tender green bok choy was growing. He reached out and pulled up three bok choy plants.

"Pick more."

"Mr. Dong, this is enough to eat."

Dong Jisheng's eyes were full of gratitude. "Immortal Master, since I started using the method you taught me, my sleep has improved, I no longer cough, and I have more energy to work. Thank you so much."
