Chapter 10
I don’t know if the verbal battle just now consumed too much of Chen Shiman’s energy. In short, halfway through the journey, Gu Zhun felt that this person had become much quieter. He was playing with his mobile phone, not making any noise, and occasionally laughing, which made people happy.
But at a long intersection with a red light, the driver slowly stepped on the brakes. Gu Zhun had just taken out his cell phone to read a book when he heard Chen Shiman yelling next to him. He almost jumped up immediately, and his plump, round head hit the roof of the car with a "bang".
He shouted, "Driver, driver, open the door, I want to get off!"
Xiao Jiang in the back seat widened his eyes, wondering what Brother Chen was doing again.
Gu Zhun's heart was pounding, but he didn't look at him. The driver in front said that the traffic light was green, so how could he stop?
Then Chen Shiman said that they should stop at the traffic light because he had something urgent to do.
Xiao Jiang spoke up, saying kindly, "Brother Chen, what's the rush? If it's convenient, you can ask the driver to take you there. Brother Gu won't be busy soon anyway, so you don't have to take a taxi."
Xiao Jiang looked at Gu Zhun calmly, and only when he was sure that the other party was not angry or dissatisfied did he put his mind at ease.
Chen Shiman said firmly, "No!"
The car started.
"Master, please stop by the roadside!" Chen Shiman even stuck his head in front of the driver.
But the driver was also wavering. He didn't work for Chen Shiman, so he had to wait for Gu Zhun's order.
Chen Shiman looked at the driver anxiously, and then heard Gu Zhun say, "Stop the car and let him get out!"
Chen Shiman seemed to sense something strange in these words, and explained to Gu Zhun, "My brother asked me to go home. It's not that I don't want you to send me off, but it's mainly because my brother doesn't like me being in the entertainment industry. I'm sorry, thank you for your kindness."
After Chen Shiman said this, Gu Zhun threw him out of the car.
Chen Shiman took a taxi and wondered on the way if his brother had noticed that he hadn't been to the company for several days and was coming to question him.
But then he thought, his brother didn't like him doing these things in the first place, and if he found out that he didn't go, he might really beat drums and gongs and be very happy.
So he was happy all the way, and when he got home, he walked in with a swagger, without any guilt as before.
He saw Chen Mocheng reading documents, wearing a well-tailored suit, sitting in the sun, with a row of fruits and water in front of him. He seemed unaware of Chen Shiman's arrival and was still concentrating on his work.
Chen Shiman rushed over and hugged his brother's neck, avoiding the glands, and rested his chin on his brother's head, acting coquettishly: "Brother, why did you ask me to come back?"
Sensing the weight coming from him, Chen Mocheng put down the file full of notes, ruffled the other person's smooth hair with his backhand, and asked lazily: "I heard that you haven't been to the company for a long time?"
After that day, Chen Mocheng no longer paid attention to this matter until this morning when the editor-in-chief said that the young master had not been to work for several days. Only then did he realize that something was wrong.
Chen Shiman was a man of character, and while such things would disgust him, they wouldn't cause him to miss work for days. He initially thought his brother had finally seen through the wickedness of the entertainment industry, but then he realized that his brother had actually been in a better mood these past two days, seemingly possessing endless energy.
"Tell me, what have you been doing these past two days?" Chen Mocheng pushed the fruit in front of him to his brother with a very gentle tone.
"Well, of course I'm going to play around!" Chen Shiman's lying skills are now even more powerful.
Chen Mocheng smiled and said, "Since you have nothing to do, come with me to the company in a couple of days. I'll show you around. You're in your twenties now, you can't just sit around doing nothing all day."
Chen Mocheng now manages all of the Chen family's businesses. Since the Chen couple retired, Chen Mocheng hasn't had a single day off.
He had originally planned to wait for his brother to graduate and hand over part of the business to him, but he hadn't expected his brother to plunge headfirst into the entertainment industry and never get out. Now that there were finally signs of a stall, he naturally wanted to make a seamless transition.
In fact, Chen Mocheng didn't really want his younger brother to take over the family business. After all, business affairs were more complicated and dark. With his younger brother's temper, he was afraid that he would suffer losses.
But Chen Mocheng hopes that his younger brother can have a career to rely on. He won't be with his younger brother forever. He will also grow old and face danger. He hopes that before that day comes, his younger brother can grow strong enough.
Be strong enough to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Chen Shiman couldn't understand Chen Mocheng's good intentions. So he just retreated blindly, biting the cherry and said, "No, I don't like these. Besides, why would I join the company when my brother is here? Could it be that my brother thinks I'm troublesome?"
His lifelong dream is to be a little bug raised by his brother, and no one can enjoy it more than him.
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Chen Mocheng growled.
He stared at his brother for a long time, and his mind recalled the scene seven or eight years ago when his brother came home for the first time. He looked around in the same carefree way, his watery eyes fell on him, and he called him brother in a muffled voice.
So Chen Mocheng had to compromise. If he didn't want to go in, then he wouldn't go in. There were still many days to come.
The evening sun was still scorching, its golden glow burning Chen Shiman's cheeks. Seeing that his brother seemed to be in a good mood, he didn't know what was going on in his head, but mustered up the courage to speak: "Brother, I want to move out."
He had this idea a long time ago.
Last time, in a fit of anger, he bought the house opposite the one Gu Zhun gave him. Later, after thinking about it for a long time, he decided to move there.
This would not only make it easier for him and Gu Zhun to have an affair, but also make it easier for him to get to and from work. After all, he was living at home and the fact that he was still involved in the entertainment industry was impossible to hide.
Chen Shiman said this heartlessly, but it really dropped a depth bomb.
The beautiful weather seemed to have suddenly turned to winter, and the cold air swept in, drying out my smooth face. The water in the swimming pool froze, and the air became thin.
"Let's eat some fruit." Chen Mocheng did not answer the question directly, but his attitude was very clear.
This answer was within Chen Shiman's expectations. After all, his brother was always like this and would not allow him to leave his sight.
Even when he was working overtime and drinking, he would call at eleven or twelve o'clock to confirm Chen Shiman's whereabouts.
Chen Shiman used sweet words to play the emotional card: "Brother, I am 23 years old, and I am no longer a child. Other people's children have gone out to make a living, and I can't even stay out all night now..." The more Chen Shiman thought about it, the sadder he became, and he couldn't say anything.
"How dare you say that? I haven't settled the score with you for not coming back last time!" This matter was about to pass, but Chen Shiman actually brought it up now. He had to have a good talk with him.
Chen Shiman seemed to realize that he had said the wrong thing and quickly apologized for his life, but he was only apologizing for not coming home last time, not for moving out this time.
He seemed to be determined to make things difficult for Chen Mocheng on this hot afternoon.
"Brother, I can take care of myself, just promise me, I promise to call you every day and come home every weekend!"
Chen Mocheng remained silent, just staring at his brother, unable to speak.
He stared at his brother for a long time. His face had grown, becoming more handsome and endearing than when he was little. Time seemed to have brought nothing but gifts to his face, without even the slightest trace of damage.
Chen Mocheng thought, isn’t it always said that time is a good medicine? Why can’t he let himself go?
That was many years ago.
At that time, Chen Shiman was only 4 years old and Chen Mocheng was only 11 years old. They were children who had just begun to understand things.
He clearly remembered that it was a clear and crisp Sunday in autumn. At that time, the Chen family's business was not as big as it is now, and his parents were busy traveling in other cities all year round. So the four-year-old Chen Shiman lay by the door, looking at his brother who was doing homework, begging his brother to take him to the playground.
Chen Mocheng didn't like amusement parks. He hated those exciting and thrilling rides and always felt that they might cost lives, so he refused his brother and turned around to continue scratching his head and doing his homework.
But the younger brother refused to give in. He stupidly climbed up the chair and onto the table with his chubby body. He sat on Chen Mocheng's homework book, staring at him and said, "Brother... I want to sit on the rotating one! Go! Go, go!"
Little Chen Shiman didn’t know it was called a carousel. He only knew that his parents took him on one once and it was very fun.
At that time, Chen Mocheng put down his pen, held his chubby brother in his arms, and coaxed him: "Be good, little brother. I will take you there when mom and dad come back. You can't go there now. You have to be obedient, okay?"
Chen Mocheng, like a little adult, held his younger brother in his arms, scratching his head and clumsily solving math problems.
He thought his brother would be quiet for a while, but just as he finished a math problem, his brother grabbed his collar and said, "No! I want to go out and play!"
As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears, and his snot and tears were all stuck to Chen Mocheng's clothes.
At first, Chen Mocheng let his brother cry, thinking, "He's just a child, he'll get better after crying, everyone goes through this." But the truth is, his brother was crying so hard that his voice was almost hoarse, but he still didn't stop. Chen Mocheng had no choice but to call his parents.
My parents were attending a very important meeting at the time. My mother took a moment to comfort my brother and then hung up the phone, but it didn't work because my brother was still crying.
So Chen Mocheng had no choice but to discuss with the driver and take his brother to the amusement park.
He simply thought, how could he and the driver not be able to take care of a child?
So the two of them changed into clean clothes. Chen Mocheng carried a small schoolbag filled with snacks and took his younger brother to the amusement park.
He remembered that there were really a lot of people in the amusement park that day, shoulder to shoulder. He held his brother's hand, and the driver held his hand. Everyone held their hands very tightly, for fear that the crowd would separate them.
Chen Mocheng remembered that the driver's hands that day were dry and broad, and the overlapping palms conveyed a reassuring feeling to him, while his own palms were sweating a lot, and he looked at his brother's face full of worry.
On that day, the younger brother got to ride the carousel as he wished. Chen Mocheng held his younger brother and rode back and forth. The driver took a lot of photos of them below. They were laughing so happily.
Later, the younger brother said he wanted to eat popcorn, so Chen Mocheng carried his younger brother down and asked the driver to buy some while they waited there.
But the driver insisted on taking the two children with him, so they held each other's hands again as they did before.
But I don’t know if it was because the flow of people was too large at that moment, or maybe there were too many people wearing doll costumes, which blocked the entire road. The hands that were clearly tightly clasped together were gently loosened at some point in time.
When Chen Mocheng realized that his palms were empty, he quickly turned his head. His whole body was petrified and cold. His young heart seemed to have stopped beating. In his pupils, he only saw the sea of people in front of him and countless clowns making trouble.
He could not see his missing brother, nor could he hear the anxious cries beside his ears. He knew that he had lost his brother with his own hands.
