Chapter 15 Know When to Stop

"Why did you take so long?" Zhou Mingqian asked worriedly as he came out wearing his coat.

"Let's go inside and talk."

"What's wrong? You look so lost and confused. Honey, is your stomach upset?" Zhou Mingqian asked anxiously.

Shen Banxia shook her head. "Do you still remember Li Hua, the educated youth?"

"The one going back to the city?"

"Well, just now, when I passed by my little sister's room, I heard it, and then... in the end..." She looked at Zhou Mingqian with pleading eyes, "Do you think we can tolerate something like this? Why can such a scumbag get away with it?"

"This is intolerable! It's ruining the reputation of us men!" Zhou Mingqian and his wife were united in their indignation.

"So tell me, what kind of way should we come up with to deal with that Zhao Zhigao?"

"Hmm, how about we put a sack over his head and beat him up?" Zhou Mingqian offered his suggestion enthusiastically.

Shen Banxia laughed, "You're really something, why don't you just ask me why?"

“My wife is definitely not wrong,” Zhou Mingqian said without hesitation.

“She helped me,” Shen Banxia said. She wasn’t one to meddle in other people’s business, but she didn’t like owing anyone anything, whether it was a favor or something else.

"Okay, I'll go find someone to inquire about Zhao Zhigao."

The next day.

While eating breakfast, Zhou Mingqian spoke up, "Mom, don't keep those gifts to yourself. They're for thanking my wife, so you have to give them to her."

Zhou's mother was stunned for a moment, but quickly realized what she meant. "Get lost! We haven't separated the family yet, so where would your things come from?"

Zhou Mingqian was indignant. "Why should they give me such nice things? If it weren't for my wife, why would they give me such nice gifts?" He disliked Su Yu as a person, but the gifts were innocent.

Although Zhou Mingqian was also involved in some dealings, he did it legitimately. He valued his life and avoided the black market as much as possible.

"Since we haven't separated the family, I'm in charge," Zhou's mother didn't care about anything else.

If it were given to the eldest son and his wife, they would probably squander it all in a day or two.

They say birds of a feather flock together, and this couple is certainly cunning and scheming.

"I don't care, that's for my wife. If you don't give it to me, I'll go ask Su Yu who that thing is for!" Zhou Mingqian knew his mother's temperament all too well.

They're so stingy they probably won't even take it out for the New Year, so it'll most likely end up in the stomachs of those people in the provincial capital.

I don't know what my mother was thinking.

"You, you, you really have the nerve to be shameless. Tell me, how did I give birth to such a shameless thing like you?"

"Mother, just tell me whether you'll give it to me or not," Zhou Mingqian believed that what he had in his hands was truly his.

"Here, here, here," Zhou's mother said reluctantly as she took a handful of candy from the wooden box. "You all need to be careful with this; it's good stuff."

Zhou Mingqian was convinced.

"Mom, they brought quite a lot, so I don't need the meat." Anyway, I can't cook for myself. "Then you have to give me the milk candy, chocolate, malted milk powder, milk powder, and imported milk powder."

Every time Zhou Mingqian spoke of a dish, Zhou's mother's heart trembled.

After he finished speaking, he said, "No, we can't let you mess around. We still have to go to my uncle's house for the New Year."

Zhou Mingqian knew this would happen. "Mom, you're right. Uncle and the others can eat all sorts of good food in the provincial capital. They wouldn't even look at your stuff." This was pure nonsense.

"Get the hell out of here, and stop trying to fool me."

"My dear mother, why are you arguing with your aunt? Wouldn't it be better to keep the good stuff at home?"

The rest of the family felt the same way; they hadn't expected that it would all contain such good stuff.

Zhou Mingjiao spoke first, "Mother, this time my eldest brother is right."

"Yes, Mother," Zhou Laosan said, his heart aching the most.

"You guys, do you really think I'm trying to compete with your aunt? Don't you think about it? Your uncle's family is in the provincial capital. If you don't get along with them, how will you ask them for help in the future?"

Zhou Mingqian twitched his lips. "Mother, you really dare to think like that. Don't you know what kind of person Uncle is? He's the most upright and incorruptible man."

"What 'Ah' or 'no'? We're all family, why can't we help each other?" He then looked at Zhou Mingjiao and said, "Jiao, I plan to ask your aunt to help with your marriage."

Zhou Mingjiao also liked her aunt, but she had never thought about it that way before.

So this is how Mother planned things for me?

For a moment, Zhou Mingjiao couldn't tell whether she felt regret or joy.

My aunt knows people from the provincial capital. Will she have a chance to become a resident of the provincial capital in the future?

Zhou Mingjiao felt extremely conflicted. Looking at her mother, she couldn't help but feel resentful, wondering why she hadn't told her sooner.

In the end, he still didn't reveal his true thoughts.

Shen Banxia saw it clearly. She didn't expect that Zhou Mingjiao's true love in the script was actually her mother-in-law's plan so early on.

Mr. Zhou sighed and said, “Old woman, give half of those things to the eldest son’s wife. As for troubling the eldest sister-in-law, let’s just forget about it.”

Zhou's mother disagreed, saying, "Old man, don't worry about it so much. I have my own plans for those things."

Unable to win the argument, Zhou's father simply walked away with his hands behind his back.

Seeing this, Shen Banxia suddenly felt that some of the content in the script was actually quite good.

Zhou's father was indeed fairly fair in important matters, but quite muddle-headed when it came to handling trivial family matters.

“Mom, if you don’t give it to me, I’ll go ask around,” Zhou Mingqian refused.

Why should I not be allowed to eat what my wife earns through her own hard work? There's no such logic anywhere.

“Hey, debt collector, I’ll give you the imported milk powder, and that other stuff too,” Zhou’s mother believed her eldest son was capable of such a thing.

That thing, so dark and murky, she knew it couldn't be anything good.

As for the baby formula, forget it, at least the eldest son's wife is carrying the Zhou family's offspring.

Even though she doesn't say it, deep down she still hopes that her eldest son can have a child of his own.

Previously, she genuinely believed there was no hope and even planned to adopt one of her second, third, or fourth children at random.

They were all useless; now they're all just girls.

Seeing that his mother's eyes were practically spitting fire, Zhou Mingqian knew when to stop while he was ahead.

However, Zhou Mingqian volunteered, "Mom, where's the meat? Let's make some for lunch, braised pork. Why don't you give it to me?"

Despite his laziness, he's the undisputed best cook in the family.

"Get lost! With your big hands, the oil you use in one meal is more than I use in three days. With your cooking method, even burning a shoe sole would taste good."

Zhou Mingqian pouted, thinking that his mother was just stingy, and that she only used an oilcloth to dab food when cooking.

"You still complain about your mother? Every family has to calculate and scheme in their daily lives. With your big hands, you're a complete spendthrift. You'll understand when you move out and start your own family."

Zhou Mingqian was craving meat. "Yes, yes, you're right. When are we going to make meat? It would be a waste if it went bad."

Zhou's mother: ...

So all that talk was for nothing?

At dinner, Shen Banxia finally got to eat meat. As she savored the memory, the transparent script screen reappeared, with new changes on it.
