Mr. Zhou was completely bewildered. "Old woman, what on earth is going on?"
Zhou's mother sneered, "Hmph, you still have the nerve to ask what happened? From now on, I will never set foot in your elder brother's house again. As for you, if you still want to get involved with your elder brother's family, then we might as well get a divorce."
Shen Banxia was genuinely curious at this moment. You see, these days people think divorce is a shameful thing, let alone the generation of her mother-in-law.
Mr. Zhou's face darkened. "What kind of talk is this? Aren't you afraid of being laughed at? Just say what you need to say."
"You have the nerve to say that? It's all your fault. If it weren't for you, would I have had to beg your sister-in-law for help? And what happened?"
When Shen Banxia found out, her aunt refused.
But what Shen Banxia couldn't understand was that even if it was a rejection, she shouldn't have gotten so angry.
"Those poor relatives who freeload off others, don't they even look at themselves? What are they saying? That they have low moral standards? What kind of arranged marriages are these days?"
"Are you mistaken? My sister-in-law isn't that kind of person."
"Ha, she's not that kind of person. I am, you know. I'm not good enough for their family," Zhou's mother said, laughing angrily.
"Zhou Qianjin, I was really blind back then. I can't live like this anymore."
Zhou's mother was truly heartbroken. The elderly couple had lived most of their lives together, and in the end, they preferred to believe outsiders rather than themselves.
“Old woman, that’s not what I meant. I meant we should ask more clearly so as not to hurt everyone’s feelings,” Zhou’s father continued to explain.
But Zhou's father didn't realize that the more he said, the more mistakes he made; his words only added fuel to the fire.
Zhou's mother went inside, packed her things, and looked at Zhou Mingqian, "Eldest son, go and bring out the bicycle. I'm going to your uncle's house."
Seeing that the old woman was serious, he said, "Old woman, stop making a fuss. It's gotten to this point already!"
Zhou's mother didn't like listening to him. Seeing Zhou Mingqian standing there in a daze, she said, "Eldest son, you think I can't order you around anymore?"
Seeing his mother like this, Zhou Mingqian didn't dare to add fuel to the fire.
While Zhou Mingqian was pushing the cart, Zhou Laosan couldn't help but advise, "Mother, why don't we just give up?"
Zhou Lao Er nodded in agreement, but Zhou Lao Si had disappeared without a trace.
I haven't seen anyone since I finished work recently.
"Shut up, I don't want to hear you talk."
Mr. Zhou couldn't help but grab his hair, "Old woman, how could you... sigh..."
Seeing Zhou Mingqian push the bicycle out, the anger in his heart surged to the top of his head.
"Zhou Mingqian, don't you think things are getting out of hand? Tell me, how did you two old folks do things? Weren't we supposed to be taking good care of your mother? Tell me exactly what happened."
Zhou Mingqian never expected that he and his wife could be blamed for this.
It's all taken out on him, a classic case of taking one's anger out on someone else.
“My dear father, I’m a son, not a punching bag. My wife and I work hard every day, and we finally get to go to the provincial capital. Shouldn’t we go and see what it’s like?”
"Stop giving me this nonsense, just tell me what really happened."
Zhou Mingqian looked bewildered.
"Eldest daughter-in-law, you speak."
Shen Banxia pointed to herself, "Is there a part for me here?"
"Dad, we didn't know, we just went out."
"Dad, you still don't believe me, do you?" Zhou Mingqian complained, unable to hold back his anger. "No wonder Mom doesn't want to live with you anymore."
"Zhou Mingqian, I'm not deaf."
Even Shen Banxia couldn't help but take a step back.
"What are you yelling about? Do you think you're the one who's louder? Why are you asking them? No matter what I say, you still don't believe me."
Zhou's mother was practically steaming from her head.
Zhou's father's arrogance immediately subsided. "Old woman, it wasn't that information. I was just afraid that something might have been left unsaid."
"I've made myself clear enough, Zhou Mingqian, what are you dawdling for? Hurry up and send it to your uncle's house," Zhou's mother said impatiently.
"You're not allowed to go, Zhou Mingqian. If you dare to send someone, I'll break your legs."
“Zhou Qianjin, all you do is hit, hit, hit! If you’re so capable, why don’t you interrupt me?” Zhou’s mother glared at him.
“Mother, I am your own son,” he said, then looked at his father. “You can argue all you want, but don’t drag me into it. It wasn’t me who said it.”
Looking at Zhou Mingqian, who was like a rat in a bellows, Shen Banxia almost couldn't help but laugh. Who would have thought that in this real-life story of rural elderly people's hobbies, the one who would end up hurting was her own husband?
"Shut up," they both said in unison.
Shen Banxia covered her mouth, she couldn't take it anymore, she needed to calm down. This old couple, no one would believe it wasn't love, right?
My mother-in-law has such a fiery temper; if it weren't for my father-in-law's tolerance, she wouldn't be saying such trendy things like "I can't live like this anymore."
"Zhou Qianjin, what are you yelling about? I'm too lazy to listen to you anymore. You can go and spend the rest of your life with your older brother."
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Zhou's father said, his face darkening.
"Oh my, Cuihua, are you going back to your parents' home again? What did Brother Zhou do to offend you this time? You were like this when you were young, and I didn't expect you to still be doing this now that you're old. Only Brother Zhou would fall for this."
"Zhu Dazui, shut up! What's it to you?"
".
Aunt Zhu, holding her rice bowl, took a bite of rice and said, "Hey, who told you to be so loud? I could hear you even while I was eating in the house."
Upon hearing this, Zhou's mother glared at Zhou's father with hatred. It was all that old man's fault that she had been embarrassed again.
"By the way, I didn't hear you clearly just now. What exactly is going on here? It's getting dark, isn't it? I think you should go back tomorrow. Oh, and if you go back, you can bring me some dried mushrooms from my older brother's place. It's a good trip back for me."
Shen Banxia covered her mouth. Aunt Zhu was truly a brave person, not afraid of her mother-in-law's murderous gaze at all.
He continued, "I'm a person of principle, I won't let you make a wasted trip. I'll share some with you later."
"You, you, you..." Zhou's mother was furious. Why was Zhu Dazui everywhere?
"Oh, since you're going back anyway, why don't you bring me some too? I already said I'd share some with you, didn't I?" If she hadn't been so busy at home lately, she would have gone back by herself already.
"I'm so glad I came from the same village as you; nothing good ever comes from meeting you."
"Hehe," Aunt Zhu chuckled good-naturedly.
Shen Banxia watched with amusement. Aunt Zhu was truly a remarkable person, forming a gossip buddy with her and engaging in a love-hate relationship with the old woman.
Both women were from the same village, married into Zhoujiazhuang at the same time, and eventually became neighbors.
Zhou's mother turned her head away, not wanting to deal with these people anymore. "Zhou Mingqian, what are you still standing there for? Hurry up and ride your bike over here."
"Mom, aren't you worried about the bicycle right now?"
"Get lost, and stop grinning at me. You're no better than your father."
Zhou Mingqian rubbed his nose. Well, he really had been dragged down by the old man.
