Chapter 20: The Accumulated Disappointment

Qin's mother and Lu's mother were whispering something in the living room. When they saw them come back together, they couldn't stop smiling.

They exchanged a glance, their eyes conveying the message: Look, the two children are a perfect match.

The food isn't ready yet.

Lu's mother warmly took Qin Yue's little hand and sat her down on the sofa, then exclaimed in surprise, "Little Yue's hands are so soft, so boneless, like a piece of tofu."

As he spoke, he took Qin Yue's hand in his own and played with it carefully.

I absolutely love it.

Lu Yanci shifted his gaze from the delicate, slender hands to the exquisitely sculpted face, realizing he had been staring intently. He quickly picked up the tea the servant had placed in front of him and took a sip to cover up his distraction.

Qin Yue's face was practically frozen from smiling.

“Before you came back, your mother and I were talking about the show you participated in. What you said about attending your ex-boyfriend's funeral made me laugh.”

"They even asked me about my ideal type, and the criteria they gave were incredibly clear-headed. When looking for a partner, you need to find someone responsible, not someone with a carefree personality."

"People online often talk about being love-struck, which is really scary. Yueyue is a good example; she's rational and clear-headed, and she clearly states her attitude when facing someone she doesn't like."

Every time Lu's mother mentioned something, the smile on Qin Yue's lips would fade a little.

I didn't think much of it when I said it, but now that people are bringing it up for review...

Excellent, another castle is about to be built.

The smile shifted from her face to Lu Yanci's lips.

As he watched the person opposite him lower their head further and lower, the smile in his eyes deepened.

With great interest, Qin's mother asked Lu Yanci, "What kind of person is Yanci's ideal type?"

Lu Yanci glanced at Qin Yue subconsciously, then quickly looked away and said unhurriedly, "There aren't many standards. When it comes to feelings, it's all about first impressions."

As someone with experience, Qin's mother noticed Lu Yanci's gaze and sensed something amiss. It seemed that Tan Ying's words were true; this young man from the Lu family was indeed interested in her daughter.

Although Yan Ci was quiet and reserved, Qin's mother thought there was nothing wrong with that; the glib and talkative type was not suitable for her daughter.

Lu's mother also said that after dinner they would go to the mall together and Lu Yanci would carry their bags.

I received a phone call right after I finished speaking.

The call came from the Lu family's old residence.

Grandpa Lu went fishing with his old friend.

A fight broke out between a fish and a person.

No, it fell before it even started.

Tell them to go back and check on things quickly.

They didn't even have time to eat before the family of three hurriedly prepared to leave.

Just then, the Lu family received another phone call, and the old man's strong voice came through the phone.

Knowing he's alright puts my mind at ease, but I still need to go check on him.

As soon as the Lu family left, Qin's mother took Qin Yue to her room.

He seemed ready to have a long, heart-to-heart talk with her.

The conversation was originally about Lu Yanci, but after a few words, Qin Yue shifted the topic to Qin Xu.

When Qin Xu was mentioned, Lu Yanci was completely forgotten.

Qin's mother glanced at Qin Yue's expression, but saw nothing amiss, before tentatively saying:

"Those people online are really something. They know you and Xiaoxu are siblings, yet they still pair you up as a couple. It's ridiculous. It's not your fault, but they still have to scold you."

Qin Yue sensed that there was a question in her words.

Holding Qin's mother's hand, she looked up and asked, "Did you figure something out?"

Qin's mother sighed and said, "I know you treat Xiaoxu like a younger brother."

They only talked about her, without mentioning Qin Xu's attitude towards her.

Qin Yue held her hand, leaned down, pressed her cheek against her mother's soft palm, gently rubbed it, and said in a hoarse voice, "There's something I've been keeping from you. Xiao Xu confessed her feelings to me four years ago."

"What did you say?!" Qin's mother exclaimed in shock.

She gripped Qin's mother's sleeve tightly, her voice tinged with self-reproach and unease:

“At the time, I thought he was still young and couldn’t distinguish between romantic love and familial love, so I only said a few words to him and didn’t take it to heart. Over the years, I thought he had long since let go of it… I never expected…”

Qin Yue sat up straight as she spoke: "Mom, did I do something wrong? Should I not have come back?"

She said Yueyue had just returned, and in such a short time, how could Xiaoxu... It turns out there were clues all along.

She, as a mother, knew absolutely nothing!

This was their oversight as parents; how can you say it was her fault?

Qin's mother felt a sharp pang of bitterness. She held the uneasy girl in her arms, gently patted her back, and soothed her softly, "You did nothing wrong. No one would have thought of this, not even your father and I."

Qin Yue wrapped her arms around her mother's waist, rested her head on her shoulder, and said in a muffled voice, "After all, we're not blood siblings. Every move we make will be magnified and interpreted. It doesn't matter if I get scolded a few times, but it can't affect Xiao Xu's career."

Xiaoxu is still young, and I'm afraid he won't be able to handle what I said. I'll have to keep my distance from him from now on. Or maybe I should just move out altogether?

They watched Qin Xu grow up.

Qin Yue knew clearly that although Qin Xu was not their biological son, they were no different from each other. The feelings they had shared over the years could not be faked.

It's okay. Disappointment accumulates little by little, and when there's enough of it, it's enough to wear away all the love.

She would do everything in her power to erase all their affection for Qin Xu, leaving only disappointment.

While the majority of online comments praised the daughter's appearance, some irrational fans also hurled extremely offensive insults.

Especially those who are associated with Qin Xu.

Qin's mother saw many things this morning.
