Chapter 6: Suffering on the Road

Of course Jiang Sheng knew that his father had always disliked him. He had an elder brother who was a prodigy in both literature and martial arts, and an younger brother who was born with supernatural powers. He was the only one who could do nothing and was a waste who was neither good at literature nor martial arts.

If his father saw what he said, he would definitely beat him up.

But so what? At least he can't be killed. Compared with the disaster of the Jiang family being wiped out, this little pain is nothing.

As long as his father and brother are alive and well, the Jiang family will not fall. Only when he sees them well with his own eyes can he truly let go of his worried heart.

Qingshan and Qingmu looked at each other and felt that the third young master had changed. If it were before, he would definitely jump up and down and blame the master for favoring the eldest and second young masters.

It is unbelievable that he is so calm now. Could it be that he really broke his brain and that is why he is like this?

Thinking of this, he worriedly asked, "Sir, does your head still hurt?"

Jiang Sheng hummed, ate the dry food in his hand with big mouthfuls, looked indifferent and didn't want to say much. The firewood burned, making crackling sounds.

Qingshan looked at the bubbling water in the earthenware pot and asked curiously, "Sir, since you came out this time, you have never drunk water from the river. Why do you always boil it before drinking it?"

“…”

His eyes dimmed as if he was thinking of bad memories.

"I once saw someone who frequently drank raw water develop worms in their stomachs. It was a horrifying sight. From then on, I always boiled water."

Qingshan was a little unconvinced and said with a smile: "Sir, how is this possible? I have never heard of such a thing."

Jiang Sheng lowered his eyes, hiding the expression in his eyes, and said calmly: "That's because you have never been to the slums. You don't know how miserable the death of people who drink dirty water for a long time is."

After the three of them had eaten and drunk their fill, they continued on their journey.

It was not until dark that we found a place with water to rest.

Qingshan muttered, "Hey, I've never been in such a hurry since I entered the General's Mansion. We still have martial arts skills to rely on."

"You said the Third Young Master was weak, but he was traveling so fast all the way, and yet he never complained of being tired. After being whipped by the old lady, he seemed like a different person."

Qingmu had a cold personality. Seeing him chattering away, he just coldly spat out two words: "Noisy!"

Upon hearing this, Qingshan was choked. He glared at him fiercely and said unhappily, "Just wait, I'll go find the Third Young Master to judge the matter."

He trotted over to Jiang Sheng and saw him fiddling with herbs. He was puzzled: "Sir, what are you doing?"

"poison."

"Ah, what's the point of making poison? If you accidentally get poisoned, what will you do in the wilderness? Sir, don't play with such dangerous things."

Qingshan raised his hand to take the things away, but he met a pair of displeased eyes and heard a cold voice: "Be quiet, if you make any more noise, you will go back to the capital."

Jiang Sheng ignored him and crushed the medicine by himself.

"Sir, you have changed..."

"If you're bored, go hunting in the woods and catch a couple of pheasants. We'll roast them tonight and then go to the next town and stay at an inn."

When Qingshan heard that he could go to the town to rest, the resentment in his heart instantly disappeared, and he looked at him with bright eyes: "That's great, young master, we can finally go to the inn to rest."

"I've been traveling so much these days that I can't feel my butt anymore, and my thighs are rubbed raw. It's really painful. Don't you feel any pain, sir?"

Jiang Sheng shook his head and said calmly: "I don't know, I didn't notice it, it seems to be worn out."

"...I'll go catch the chicken right away."

Not long after, Qingshan picked up one in each hand, cleaned it and prepared to roast it on the fire.

Seeing this, Jiang Sheng walked over, took the chicken, picked a few lotus leaves, put seasoning salt on them, marinated them, wrapped them directly in lotus leaves, and then smeared them with mud.

They dug a hole, buried it, and set it on fire. Qingshan Qingmu squatted beside them and asked in confusion, "Sir, what are you doing?"

"Make beggar's chicken, it's delicious."

Far away from the capital, and covered by darkness, he didn't need to pretend to smile, and he really couldn't smile. He did his work with a blank expression.

Qingshan looked at his young master's expressionless face, feeling a little scared. He changed the subject: "Young master, when did you learn to cook? You look so good at it, so impressive."

Jiang Sheng threw firewood into the pit and said perfunctorily, "Just learn a little. When you're out there alone, it's good to learn a few things to keep you company."

"Young Master is truly amazing, but you are the legitimate son, and have been fed and clothed in fine clothes and waited on since childhood. You don't need to learn these things. A gentleman should stay away from the kitchen."

She raised her eyelids and looked at him with deep eyes.

He said meaningfully, "No one can do it better than you can do it yourself. It's better to learn on your own initiative than to be forced to learn one day. Besides, I'm not good at either literature or martial arts, so I should at least have a skill."

Qingmu looked at his expression, a flash of worry in his eyes, and he comforted him softly: "Sir, the old lady treats you very well. This time she may have been too angry that she whipped you."

"You...don't worry too much. You're the one who has a rift with the old lady."

Jiang Sheng nodded and said nothing more.

"Okay, let it sit for a while and then you can eat it."

The three of them ate the delicious beggar's chicken with satisfied smiles on their faces. Qingshan said vaguely, "Sir, your cooking skills are amazing. The chicken cooked this way is delicious."

"It's delicious, eat more. After you finish eating, boil some water and wash up. Then go to bed early. We have to travel at dawn tomorrow."

"Yes, sir."

In the dead of night

Jiang Sheng and others fell asleep, and they slipped directly into the space, looking at the things planted in the black soil, which were almost ripe.

A look of surprise appeared on his face.

"This black soil is truly precious. If we continue to cultivate it like this, we will never be able to eat all the food in the future. Only by having food can we survive."

Jiang Sheng felt a sharp pain in his thigh. He slowly walked to the edge of the pond, took off his clothes, poured the water on himself, and looked at the bloody wound.

There was no change in his expression. After a while, the friction wounds slowly healed and he let out a long sigh.

With this precious pool of water, even if his father and brother were injured on the battlefield, he could use the water to save them instead of just watching helplessly.

Jiang Sheng wiped off the water stains on his body and walked quickly into the bamboo house to read. He traveled during the day and read at night without delaying each other, and his impatient heart was at ease.

He discovered that the flow of time in the bamboo house was different from that outside. Three hours in the bamboo house was equivalent to one hour outside, which saved a lot of time.

Holding the book in both hands, I sat on the ground and forgot the time as I read.

It was not until he heard a call from outside that Jiang Sheng realized that he had not slept all night. He rubbed his sore eyes and went straight to the bushes.

He brushed off the non-existent dust on his body, and the noise startled Qingshan and Qingmu. They flew over with luck and were relieved to see that he was fine.

"Master, where have you been? We looked around but couldn't find anyone."

Jiang Sheng urged: "I just went to the bathroom. Let's go. We should hurry up."

At the foot of the mass grave mountain, gusts of cold wind blew.

Jiang Sheng dismounted and said without turning back, "Wait here! No one is allowed to go up the mountain without my order!"

After saying that, he ran along the path towards the mountain.
