New Green

New Green

Since the day he planted the flower seeds, Chen Bozhou had an unshakable job. Every morning and evening, he would appear in the Yun family courtyard on time, holding the small watering can, and carefully watering the land under the window as if he were caring for a newborn baby.

His movements went from being clumsy and stiff at the beginning to becoming gentle and even.

Yunwu devoted the little energy he had left after taking care of the medicinal fields to this newly cultivated flower garden.

In his breaks from work, he would often squat under the window, gently lift some loose soil with his fingers, check the condition of the seeds, or observe the moisture of the soil.

He didn't talk much, but Chen Bozhou could see the silent concern in his eyes.

The days passed quietly in anticipation. On the morning of the eighth day, Chen Bozhou arrived early as usual, with uncontrollable anticipation in his heart.

He carried the kettle, his steps brisker than usual. As soon as he entered the courtyard, his eyes eagerly cast towards the window.

I saw tiny, delicate green shoots sprouting from the dark brown earth! They were so tiny they looked as if they would break at the slightest touch, yet they had indeed broken through the soil, trembling slightly in the breeze, drenched in the morning dew, demonstrating their tenacious vitality.

"Yunwu! Come and see!" Chen Bozhou almost held his breath and shouted in a low voice, fearing to disturb these delicate little lives. His face was filled with undisguised ecstasy, "It's sprouted! It's really sprouted!"

Yunwu was originally sorting the herbs that were drying in the sun, and when she heard the sound, she hurried over.

When he saw the sparse but vibrant green, his calm eyes instantly lit up, like ripples on the surface of a lake where a stone was thrown.

He squatted down and looked closely, his fingertips hovering above the new shoots, but he was reluctant to touch them.

"Well," he said with a barely perceptible hint of levity in his voice, "it has sprouted."

Chen Bozhou also squatted down like him, and got so close that he could almost smell the fresh scent of soil and new plants.

He looked at the tiny green shoots and felt even happier than seeing a garden full of flowers. "Look at this one, it seems particularly strong," he said excitedly, pointing to a slightly larger shoot. "This one will definitely grow the best!"

Yunwu looked in the direction he pointed. The young sprout indeed stood taller than its neighbors. He nodded gently, his lips curled slightly. "With enough fertilizer and good sunlight, it will grow well as long as it is carefully cared for."

"Of course!" Chen Bozhou was full of confidence and immediately picked up the kettle next to him, "I'll water them now! They must drink enough water and grow quickly!" As he said that, he was about to water them as usual.

"Wait," Yunwu gently pressed his wrist, "The new sprouts are too tender, the water column can't be too fast, it will hurt the roots." He took the kettle from Chen Bozhou's hand, pressed the spout lower, almost touching the ground, allowing the water to penetrate into the soil extremely slowly and evenly, moistening everything silently.

Chen Bozhou watched intently from the side, memorizing every subtle movement. He discovered that Yunwu treated these seedlings with even more care than he treated some precious herbs.

After watering the plants, the two of them didn't leave immediately. Instead, they squatted side by side under the window, quietly gazing at the new green. The morning light gently enveloped these little lives, as well as the two people squatting beside them.

"Looking at them, I feel particularly at ease." Chen Bozhou suddenly said softly, his eyes moving from the tender buds to the side of Yunwu's face, "It's like... I see some kind of hope, which is gradually becoming a reality."

Yunwu did not respond immediately, his eyes still lingered on the trembling green buds.

After a moment, he whispered, "Plants are like this. As long as you treat them with care, they will always respond to you." His tone was calm, but with a kind of confidence that came from having experienced the vicissitudes of life.

"Just like you," Chen Bozhou blurted out, only realizing it was a bit abrupt after he finished speaking. His ears felt slightly hot, but he still mustered up the courage to look at Yunwu. "I used to think you were like this sunset flower, quiet and blooming only at certain moments. But now I think you're more like these new shoots breaking through the ground, looking slender, but with the most tenacious strength within. And..." He paused, his voice even gentler, "As long as you are given enough sunshine and rain, you will also show the most vigorous vitality."

He spoke haltingly, but every word came from the heart. He was telling Yunwu that he saw his fragility, but even more so, his resilience, and that he was willing to be the one to provide him with sunshine and rain, to protect him from blooming to his full glory.

Yunwu listened to his words, her long eyelashes trembled slightly, and she slowly turned her head to meet Chen Bozhou's sincere and passionate gaze.

In those eyes that were always calm, the figure of Chen Bozhou and a wave of deep emotion were clearly reflected.

He didn't avoid it like he did in the past, nor did he deny it, but just looked at him quietly.

The morning breeze blew by, bringing the fragrance of grass and trees from the distant medicinal fields, and also ruffling the loose hair on the two people's foreheads.

The air is filled with a silence and throbbing that is more powerful than words.

After a long while, Yunwu spoke very softly, her voice brushing against Chen Bozhou's heart like a feather: "They need to build a scaffold."

"Ah?" Chen Bozhou didn't react for a moment, still immersed in the eye contact just now.

"Evening Blooms are vines," Yunwu explained, her gaze returning to the seedlings, a barely perceptible blush tinging her ears. "When they grow a bit bigger, they'll need to climb. We need to prepare bamboo poles or branches in advance to build a trellis for them."

"Oh! Right! Build a scaffold!" Chen Bozhou immediately came back to his senses, nodded vigorously, and a bright smile bloomed on his face again. "I'm good at this, leave it to me. I'll go to the back mountain this afternoon to cut some suitable thin bamboos, and I guarantee they will be sturdy!"

His enthusiasm infected Yunwu, causing a faint blush to spread quietly to her cheeks. Yunwu gave a soft "hmm" in agreement.

The sunlight gradually grew brighter, enveloping the two figures and the new green that was full of hope.

Chen Bozhou looked at Yunwu's slightly flushed profile, then looked at the tender buds under his feet that symbolized their common expectations, and his heart was filled with an unprecedented sense of fullness.

He knew that what were breaking through the soil were not just flower seedlings, but also the growing affection between them.

He is willing to use all his patience and enthusiasm to water and protect them, waiting for the day when they are lush and full of flowers.
