Spring Rain

Spring Rain

The weather in spring changes suddenly. It was sunny yesterday, but it started to drizzle at night and didn't stop until early morning.

The rain was fine and dense, forming a hazy veil that enveloped the entire Linya Village.

Chen Bozhou woke up and listened to the sound of continuous rain outside the window. He was worried about the newly transplanted seedlings in the medicinal field and the person who never knew how to cherish himself.

He hurriedly ate his breakfast, and ignoring his mother's advice to wait until the rain subsided before going out, he put on a straw raincoat and a hat, and walked quickly through the mud towards the west end of the village.

In the Yun family courtyard, Yun Wu was standing under the eaves, staring at the dense rain curtain in a daze, with a hint of worry between his brows.

Hearing familiar footsteps, he turned around and saw the tall figure striding towards him through the rain, water droplets rolling down his straw raincoat, and a bright smile on his face under his bamboo hat.

"It's raining so hard, why did you come?" There was a hint of disapproval in Yunwu's tone, but a hint of relief flashed quietly in the depths of his eyes.

Chen Bozhou took off his bamboo hat, shook off the rain on the porch, and grinned: "It's raining so I can come here. I want to see how the seedlings in the field are doing, and to see if you've been disobedient and run out in the rain again." As he spoke, he naturally looked into the house, "Where's grandma?"

"I just took some medicine and went to sleep." Yun Wu answered softly, her eyes falling on Shen Bozhou's wet shoulders and trouser legs. "Your clothes are wet, come in and warm them up."

This was the first time that Chen Bozhou was formally invited into the Yun family's main house on a rainy day.

The house is not big and the furnishings are simple, but it is kept extremely tidy and clean. The air is filled with a faint herbal fragrance and a warm atmosphere of "home".

There is a small fire pit dug on the ground in the middle of the main room. The fire is burning brightly at this moment, dispelling the dampness and coldness of the rainy day.

The two sat down by the fire pit, the warm flames dancing and reflecting the red on each other's faces. Outside, the rain was murmuring, but inside the house, there was a rare tranquility and warmth.

"Are the seedlings in the field okay?" Chen Bozhou couldn't help but ask, leaning forward slightly and looking at Yunwu with concern.

"I checked this morning," Yunwu fiddled with the firewood in the fire pit to make it burn brighter. "The drainage ditch is clear, there's no water. But if it keeps raining, the ground temperature will be too low, and I'm afraid it will affect the rooting."

His voice was steady, but Chen Bozhou could still hear the underlying worry. He thought for a moment and said, "Don't worry too much. Wait until the rain subsides and I'll go clear the ridges. We've already piled enough fertilizer, and the soil is fertile, so the seedlings will definitely be able to handle it."

His tone was firm, with a power that could soothe people's hearts.

Yunwu looked up at him, the firelight dancing in his determined eyes like two warm stars. He nodded gently and said "hmm", and the worry in his heart seemed to be dispelled a little.

"The rain has really given us some time to relax." Chen Bozhou stretched his long legs, changed into a comfortable sitting position, and said with a smile, "I'm usually so busy, it's rare to have time like this to sit by the fire and talk."

Yunwu lowered her head, and the corners of her lips curved slightly, indicating her agreement.

He picked up the tongs and carefully pulled out a piece of roasted sweet potato from the edge of the fire pit and handed it to Chen Bozhou: "Try it, grandma put it there this morning."

Chen Bozhou took it with delight, not caring about the heat. He blew on it while peeling off the charred outer skin, revealing the tempting golden flesh inside. He took a big bite and squinted his eyes in satisfaction. "So sweet! Grandma Yun's skill in roasting sweet potatoes is truly amazing!"

Seeing him eating so sweetly, Yunwu's eyes also showed a faint smile. He silently pulled out another smaller sweet potato and set it aside to dry.

"Speaking of which," Chen Bozhou said, as he ate sweet potatoes and watched the dancing flames, as if remembering something, "after we harvest this batch of herbs, shouldn't we consider building a proper pharmacy? We can't always pile herbs in the house or under the porch. Not only will it get damp, but it will also affect the medicinal properties."

Yunwu considered his suggestion seriously and nodded, "It's time to consider it. I've found a place, right at the east end of the yard. It's sunny and well-ventilated."

"Yes! The east end is good!" Chen Bozhou agreed immediately. "The place is big enough. We can build a more spacious house. It should not only be able to store medicinal materials, but also leave space for you to prepare and dry them. The walls should be made of thick adobe, which will keep them warm in winter and cool in summer..."

He began planning enthusiastically, meticulously considering every detail, as if he already had a clear blueprint for the pharmacy in his mind. Yunwu listened quietly, occasionally adding a thought or two of his own.

"The windows need to be opened wider to let in more light."

"Yes! We also need to make some sturdy and durable medicine racks. I know a carpenter with excellent craftsmanship..."

"Drainage must also be done well to prevent moisture from returning."

The two of them chatted back and forth, discussing the future pharmacy in a harmonious and natural atmosphere.

The crackling of firewood in the firepit filled the entire cabin with a warm atmosphere. The sound of rain outside seemed like a distant background noise, not only not annoying, but also highlighting the precious tranquility inside.

As Chen Bozhou was talking, his eyes couldn't help but fall on Yunwu's profile, which was particularly soft in the light of the fire.

His long eyelashes drooped, casting a small shadow under his eyes. His nose was straight and his lips were a light cherry pink.

He listened attentively, and occasionally looked up at Chen Bozhou. The clear eyes reflected the firelight and his figure.

An indescribable sense of satisfaction and happiness filled Shen Bozhou's heart.

He suddenly felt that just like this, with the rain falling outside, they were sitting around a warm fire, planning their hopeful future together, which was the most beautiful scene in the world.

"Yunwu." He called softly, his voice unconsciously becoming softer.

"Hmm?" Yunwu raised her head and looked at him.

Chen Bozhou looked into his clear eyes, with a thousand words in his heart that he wanted to say, but in the end, it just turned into an extremely gentle smile: "Nothing, I just feel... It's really good like this."

Yunwu was stunned for a moment, as if she understood the unspoken meaning of his words. He didn't speak, simply lowering his head slightly. A faint blush crept up his ears, burning hotter than the flames in the fire pit. He didn't deny or avoid it, but simply gently passed the sweet potato in his hand, which was no longer so hot, to Chen Bozhou.

Chen Bozhou took the small piece of cake that was filled with infinite warmth, took a bite, and felt the sweetness spreading from the tip of his tongue to the deepest part of his heart.

The rain is still falling, continuously and heavily, as if to wash away all the dust in the world.

And in the Yun family's simple but warm little house, two young hearts are getting closer and closer under the nourishment of the spring rain.

They may not have too many sweet words, but this fire, some plans for the future, and a shared sweet potato are better than thousands of words.
