Chapter 45 Something on My Mind

"You are now—"

The words of help stuck in her throat. Li Ruo pursed her lips, and her eyes gradually became sore.

After a moment, she changed the subject.

"Have you just finished work? Are you going to rest?"

"Um."

"How was your workday?"

"Um."

"you--"

Before Li Ruo could finish speaking, the person on the other end spoke first.

"What's up."

The atmosphere was still.

She took a deep breath.

"There was an earthquake here."

"so?"

Two words, neither too heavy nor too light, conveying a sense of detachment and indifference.

She felt as if she had been doused with cold water; her hands and feet instantly turned icy cold.

Li Ruo suppressed a strong urge to sob.

She sniffled, her voice sounding like a mix of crying and laughing.

"But don't worry, although there was an earthquake, all the work has been completed, and we can go back to headquarters to coordinate tomorrow."

The call was disconnected.

The surrounding noise became real again.

Li Ruo's tears fell uncontrollably, and in the blink of an eye, she could no longer see anything.

Everything before my eyes was blurry, obscured by tears.

She had known Wen Huaiyan for a long time, so how could she dare to hope for even a little tenderness from him?

"Li Ruo, who do you think you are?"

Time passed slowly, and the crowd around them didn't return to the hotel in groups until the first light of dawn.

On the plane back to China, Li Ruo took the soft blanket handed to her by the flight attendant, and only then did she realize that she was safe.

Sleepiness came over her, and she took a short nap.

In just a short while, a nightmare could set in uninvited.

She dreamt of being imprisoned in her previous life, and of her eternal damnation.

Just as Li Ruo woke up, the plane landed.

Li Ru packed her things and went home. She took a hot shower, sent the last work document to her email, and only then did she feel at ease lying in bed.

Looking at the ceiling in front of her, her world became very quiet.

Faintly, Li Ruo could hear the sounds of people bustling about in the small restaurant downstairs.

It felt very homey, but she couldn't feel a trace of warmth.

"Knock knock knock—"

"Miss Li, dinner is ready."

Upon hearing the sound, Li Ruo got out of bed, her voice gentle and soft.

"I see."

Unbeknownst to them, Wen Huaiyan had already returned home.

It had been a long time since I'd seen him, but he was still the same as always.

Even when dressed casually, he gives off a mature-beyond-his-years vibe.

Those eyes were fixed on the tablet in front of them, probably looking at some online documents.

Li Ruo was already used to this kind of thing.

She obediently served the other person rice and prepared everything.

"Mr. Wen, we have your favorite stir-fried vegetables today."

Wen Huaiyan raised his eyes, and those eyes were still as bright as the stars in the sky.

At this moment, Li Ruo was frighteningly calm.

If a while ago, Li Ruo was immersed in Wen Huaiyan's imagination of his great changes because of his brief period of tenderness.

After what happened last night, Li Ruo is now fully awake.

The person in front of her was devoid of emotion; the kindness he showed her was nothing more than pity for a toy.

I can never truly get close to this man.

"I read the work report you sent, and it's very well done."

"I did do a good job, but I am also grateful to Mr. Wen for his appreciation and for giving me such a valuable opportunity, which has enabled me to contribute to the company."

Li Ruo's answer was watertight.

Her smile looked absolutely flawless.

Wen Huaiyan's eyes darkened, and he asked.

What are you unhappy about?

"Why do you say that, Mr. Wen?"

Wen Huaiyan stared at Li Ruo without saying a word.

Li Ruo smiled again.

"Did I do something wrong that made you uncomfortable, Mr. Wen? Please tell me, and I will change."

On the contrary, it was done too well.

It's as if after visiting Lihe, she turned into an emotionless robot.

Although Li Ruo used to present herself as perfect, she still expressed her emotions to some extent.

From the moment they met until now, Li Ruo has been so perfect that she seems like a robot; all her expressions and tones seem to be pre-designed.

It's not fresh enough, Wen Huaiyan is not happy.

He looked away. "It's nothing."

The dining table fell silent again, with only the sound of two people eating.

"The company has decided to promote you."

This was something Li Ruo had expected.

After a long pause, Wen Huaiyan suddenly asked a question.

"Was there an earthquake yesterday?"

Upon hearing this, a different kind of emotion appeared in Li Ruo's eyes.

The unease from last night resurfaced in her mind, and Li Ruo pursed her lips.

"Yes, but I'm fine. I just sat outside all night."

"It's good that everyone is alright."

That night.

Li Ruo nestled in Wen Huaiyan's arms, remaining his plaything as always.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and Li Ruo originally thought that tonight she would have a fierce battle.

But—Wen Huaiyan didn't touch her, he just held her quietly like this.

Wen Huaiyan's breathing was uneven and sounded disordered.

Is he preoccupied?

Li Ruo took the initiative to rub against her.

"Mr. Wen."

Seeing that the other party did not speak, Li Ruo spoke softly.

Do you want me?

As she spoke, a pair of soft little hands had already reached up to the man's shoulders.

She pressed herself against him, her body resembling a supple vine.

"Mr. Wen, I miss you very much."

"My heart and my body miss you so much."
