Yun Jin answered He Tingchuan's call: "Are you injured?"
He Tingchuan didn't expect her to start with this. He glanced at his injuries and said with a smile, "I took it, I won't die."
Yun Jin smiled: "It's good that you're not dead. I'm still waiting for you to come back and make me crayfish. Your daughter has been talking a lot lately, calling for her dad every day. She probably misses you!"
He Tingchuan felt a warmth in his heart: "And you?"
Yun Jin's lips curled up, knowing what he wanted to hear: "I miss you too, I miss you every day and every night. If you don't call me, I can't eat or sleep, and I'm afraid I'll have to remarry with Xiao Niangao."
He Tingchuan didn't like hearing the last two words: "What did you say?"
"Remarry!" Yun Jin was infuriating.
He Tingchuan's voice turned cold: "Don't even think about it."
"You don't think about it while you're still alive, but if you die, you can't control me!" Yun Jin just wanted him to live well, not for any other reason than that he had to live so that she wouldn't remarry.
He Tingchuan understood what she meant, feeling both warm and angry: "Don't say things like that again."
"Then you'd better live."
“Okay!” He Tingchuan agreed.
Yun Jin remained silent.
He Tingchuan didn't say anything either. The two listened to each other's breathing for two seconds. Then He Tingchuan suddenly spoke: "I miss you too. I miss you and the child."
"I know now, I didn't lose out." Yun Jin's lips curled up, her eyes moist, moved by his heartfelt words. She thought of something and asked, "Was Li Aiguo on the mission with you? How is he?"
"It's nothing, just a leg injury, he'll recover in a few months." He Tingchuan thought of the people he had brought out, and of Liu Xiaoguo, and his heart sank: "One of them will never come back."
Yun Jin was stunned for a moment, feeling a pang of pain in her heart. She comforted her, "Please accept my condolences."
"Okay!" He Tingchuan wanted to say something more, but seeing that someone was waiting for him, he felt embarrassed to continue making the call: "I'll talk to you when I get back. Take good care of yourself and Xiao Niangao. I'll be home soon."
Yun Jin nodded and reminded him, "Be careful."
Yun Jin hung up the phone, feeling relieved. Meeting Li Aimei's expectant gaze, she also lifted the weight off Li Aimei's heart: "Your brother is fine. He was on a mission with you, but he injured his leg and needs to rest."
Li Aimei breathed a huge sigh of relief: "It's okay that you're injured, as long as you're alive!"
Yun Jin thought the same thing. When she thought of the comrade He Tingchuan mentioned who had sacrificed his life, she didn't know what to say. This earthquake was too strong. Compared with the real world, the number of sacrifices was much, much less.
Yun Jin regretted it. If she had remembered the earthquake earlier and warned people to evacuate, would there have been no casualties?
Little Rice Cake seemed to sense her mother's slight mood, tugged at her ear, looked at her nervously, and called out, "Mommy!"
"Oh, what's wrong with my daughter?" Yun Jin was about to breastfeed.
Little Rice Cake snuggled into her arms, holding her without saying a word. After all, she was only eight or nine months old, and she was already considered to be speaking relatively early, babbling away.
Yun Jin composed herself and listened to He Tingchuan's advice that taking good care of the child was more important than anything else.
The radio has been broadcasting reports about the situation in Tang City for a while now. The rescue operation ended two days ago. It's not that they didn't want to help, it's that they simply couldn't.
The window for survival has passed. Wasting more manpower and resources could lead to more casualties. Now is the time for post-disaster reconstruction and comforting the displaced victims.
Meanwhile, Liu Xiaoguo's family also learned of his sacrifice.
Yun Jin had already heard about it from He Tingchuan, and now, hearing Gao's sister-in-law tell her about it, she saw Liu Xiaoguo's family breaking down in grief and finding it hard to accept the news of his sacrifice.
The atmosphere in the courtyard suddenly became heavy.
Yun Jin also went to offer her condolences.
He was grabbed by Liu Xiaoguo's wife: "Why him? Why?"
"Isn't it supposed to be a simple mission? How come they can't come back?"
"It's all fake, it's all fake, they're just making things up, aren't they?" Liu Xiaoguo's wife cried her heart out, ignoring her five-month pregnant belly.
After comforting her for a while, Yun Jin said, "Please accept my condolences. You still have a child. Even if it's for nothing else, you should think about the baby in your belly."
Liu Xiaoguo's wife stroked her large belly, suppressing the sadness in her eyes. Looking at her round belly, she thought about the unborn child inside and how painful it would be if she couldn't save this child either.
Thinking of what her husband said when he left, that after this mission, he would save up his vacation days like the team leader, so that he could take care of her and spend more time with her when she was in postpartum confinement.
Now, the man who wanted to be with her no longer has any holidays.
No more saving up for holidays.
Thinking of this, Liu Xiaoguo's wife lost control of her emotions: "Waaah, why are you doing this to me? Why!"
Yun Jin really wanted to see He Tingchuan at this moment.
I always feel like it's all fake when he's not around.
When He Tingchuan returned, he brought back Liu Xiaoguo's ashes.
They got off the plane, and Commander Chen and the others were there. Yun Jin was responsible for accompanying Liu Xiaoguo's wife to greet them. Besides her, Sister-in-law Gao was also there.
When Liu Xiaoguo's wife saw the urn covered with a red flag, she became so emotional that she could barely stand.
Yun Jin looked at He Tingchuan. He Tingchuan's expression was solemn, and his eyes were filled with sadness and self-blame. Looking at the tall man, who was thin, haggard and sad, Yun Jin almost did not recognize him.
She protected Liu Xiaoguo's wife to prevent her from fainting, and comforted her, telling her not to be too sad for the sake of the child. She said that the dead cannot be brought back to life, and if she didn't want anything to happen to the child, she had to take good care of him.
Liu Xiaoguo's wife listened to him, but when she finally held the urn containing his ashes, she didn't intend to go with him.
Liu Xiaoguo's wife said, "Wait for me. After I give birth to the child and raise him to adulthood, I will come to find you. Please bless our child so that he can grow up safe and healthy!"
