Yun Jin never expected that He Zizhen's visit would bring her such a big surprise.
It was clear that she had truly come to her senses; her eyes only showed guilt, embarrassment, and self-blame, without any hostility or scheming. Only then did Yun Jin pat her shoulder generously.
"Alright, it's all in the past. Who told me to be your aunt? I can't hold a grudge against a child. It's good that you've thought things through, I'm very happy!"
Upon hearing Yun Jin's words, He Zizhen breathed a sigh of relief: "Thank you, Auntie!"
"You're welcome!" Yun Jin glanced at He Ziqian again.
The one who was in charge of carrying the luggage gave him an awkward smile: "Auntie, sorry to bother you!"
"Don't be so polite, we're all family. You must be tired from the journey, hurry home. You're in for a treat today, we're having braised pork trotters and trotter soup at home, plus a vegetable dish!"
They were hungry.
He immediately followed Yun Jin toward her house.
It was their first time visiting the military base, and they were all very curious. They found that it was much smaller than the Beijing Military Region compound, but the landscaping was better and the air seemed much fresher.
The mountains are indeed different.
Knowing that Yun Jin's house wasn't big, fortunately the family building was built a few years ago and still looked new.
The tenement building doesn't look very big, but it's enough for a young couple to live in.
If there are more people, it will feel crowded.
Their refusal was somewhat narrow as soon as they entered.
Mrs. He, who was used to living in a small villa, felt a pang of sympathy looking at the cramped one-bedroom apartment. She felt sorry for the couple, thinking that at least they were military officers and received the same treatment...
Thinking about it later, it makes sense. Nowadays, everyone is struggling financially, and having a place to live is already a blessing. Being able to bring family members makes us much better off than others.
The house is very clean and comfortable to look at, plus Yun Jin likes to keep some flowers at home.
He Tingchuan would bring back any pretty wildflowers he saw and put them in vases for her to keep in fruit jars, which looked quite charming.
Yun Jin warmly invited them to sit down. Since there weren't enough enamel cups at home, she poured water for them in bowls and even made them a bowl of malted milk powder to sweeten their mouths: "Dad will be back soon, I'll go cook first."
Mother He stood up, knowing that Yun Jin was tired from taking care of the child and didn't want her to be burdened. She also knew that her son cared about his wife: "Mom is tired from the car ride and wanted to get some exercise. I'll cook, I know how to cook. You just need to watch the child. Where are the groceries?"
Yun Jin originally wanted to show off, but He's mother didn't give her the chance, so she could only go with the flow and watch He's mother cook. She accompanied her and occasionally praised her. He's mother happily cooked the braised pig's trotters.
I stewed a pig's trotter.
Yun Jin brought over the sweet potato leaves that He Zizhen had washed. He's mother made a stir-fried sweet potato leaf dish, and finally a tomato and egg soup. The three dishes and one soup were ready when He Tingchuan returned.
He could already hear on the way that his family had a guest, his mother.
He Tingchuan strode back and, seeing his mother and the others, asked in surprise, "Mom, what brings you here?"
“It just so happens that they haven’t started school yet, so they have time to come and visit me. What? Aren’t you welcome?” Mrs. He asked deliberately.
He Tingchuan shook his head and smiled, "I'm very happy that Mom is here. You must have had a long journey. I'll take the day off tomorrow to spend time with you."
Mrs. He shook her head: "No need for that trouble. You go about your business. Xiaoyun said she's going to take us fishing and crayfish catching. Just make us spicy crayfish. Xiaoyun said yours is delicious."
He Tingchuan looked at Yun Jin, who smiled and winked, her bright eyes hiding a hint of mischief.
Having been given all the instructions, He Tingchuan could only nod: "Okay, I'll listen to Mom and my wife."
After washing his hands, he took the little rice cake who wanted a hug, went to Aunt Gao's house to borrow two stools, and everyone had a good appetite and ate a meal. The braised pig's trotters were all eaten, and the pig's trotter soup was also finished.
Almost everything was on the plate. Little Niangao even had a bite of pig's trotter, which made her swoon with its aroma. She wanted more after eating it all.
Three people arrived at once, and there wasn't enough room at home. He Tingchuan went to stay in the army dormitory, while He's mother and He Zizhen stayed at home with Yun Jin. The cot that Li Aimei mentioned was still there.
He Ziqian stayed at a guesthouse.
Originally, we wanted He's mother to stay at the guesthouse as well, but she said she wanted to stay at home and didn't like staying at the guesthouse, so we had to let He Tingchuan stay in the dormitory.
He Tingchuan was thus driven away. As he left, he kept turning back to look at Yun Jin, hoping she would change her mind.
Yun Jin, however, remained unmoved, seemingly oblivious to the expectant look in his eyes. She took the little rice cake from his arms and waved, "Say goodnight to Daddy!"
Little Rice Cake happily exclaimed, "Daddy!"
He Tingchuan tried to make his presence known: "What if Nian Gao gets hungry in the middle of the night if I go to the dorm?"
"It's okay, I'll make her some milk."
What if you peed?
"I'm changing her diaper."
"if......."
He's mother saw through He Tingchuan's little scheme and asked, "How about I go stay in the dormitory?"
He Tingchuan gave his mother a resentful look, then stared at Yun Jin. Fortunately, when Xiao Niangao saw him about to leave, she remembered to call for her father from upstairs, hoping he would come back.
Yun Jin waved her hand, telling him to leave quickly.
He Tingchuan: "..."
It was the first time that He's mother and He Zizhen were living together. Little Niangao was very happy to have so many people with her, even though her father wasn't with her. She climbed around here and there, rubbed against them, and listened to them talk.
Mother He said she was relieved to see that He Tingchuan was alright.
They also brought a lot of clothes, fabric, milk powder, candy, pastries, and small toys for Xiaoniangao.
He Zizhen even took out her childhood toys.
Finally, he gave Yun Jin a bracelet, and she said shyly, "I bought it with my own pocket money. Although it's not jade, it's jade, and I think it looks nice."
