After He Ziqian got married, the He family became much more lively.
Yun Jin is doing well; she leaves early and returns late, and rests on weekends.
I can't take care of Xiao Niangao during the week, so on weekends I usually take Xiao Niangao and Aunt He out for a walk and let them experience the outside world.
If it's hot, go to the park.
There are several parks in Beijing where you can also take a boat ride.
Little Rice Cake sat on the boat, missing her father: "When is Daddy coming back?"
"Let's go see Dad when Mom has her vacation!"
"When does Mom get her vacation?" Little Rice Cake asked.
Yun Jin patted her daughter's head: "Less than a month, it'll be over soon."
"I miss my dad. When I was little, he took me boating, fishing, and playing in the water." Little Rice Cake asked, "Will he take me out to play with him again when I go to see him this time?"
Yun Jin nodded firmly: "I will definitely bring it."
Little Niangao was overjoyed and hugged Mother He's hand, saying, "Grandma, come too!"
Yun Jin smiled and looked at Mother He: "Okay, Grandma will go too, Grandpa will go too, everyone will go, let's go find Dad together!"
Mrs. He was somewhat tempted. That evening, she went home and said to Mr. He, "Xiaoyun said she's going to the military base and will take us with her. Do you want to go?"
Mr. He shook his head: "What would I do at my age go to the post? It would only cause trouble for the locals. I'm not going. If you want to go, you can go and have some fun for a few days."
Mother He's good mood was extinguished: "If you're not going, what am I supposed to do? Besides, there's a pregnant granddaughter-in-law at home. If I leave, there will only be a few of you left at home, and you won't be able to take care of yourselves at all."
Mr. He thought about it and agreed: "This family can't do without you, thank you for your hard work."
These words warmed He's mother's heart. She said regretfully, "I can only let Nian Gao and her mother go to the post. Alas, I don't know how the third brother is doing."
Mr. He said irritably, "What could happen in peacetime? It's not like our time, when there was always war going on here or there. I've fought all the wars I needed to fight. Don't worry, our country has become strong, and those people won't dare to come at us openly."
Mrs. He thought to herself, "They don't dare to do it openly, but they're certainly up to something."
Otherwise, arresting so many spies every year would just be part of the schemes orchestrated by those bad guys.
Mother He barely slept that night.
Yun Jin and Li Aimei discussed returning to their base. They decided to buy train tickets together and ask Aunt He for help. If they could get sleeper tickets, Yun Jin would buy one for Li Aimei.
Li Aimei was reluctant to part with the money; sleeper berths were expensive, and you couldn't buy one without connections.
She had a seat ticket when she came, but her brother had to pull strings to get one. Originally, she had a standing ticket, which would have been even more tiring.
Yun Jin said, "Nian Gao wants you to come with him. If you come with us, we can look after each other. You don't need to pay for it; your sister-in-law will buy it for you."
"Thank you, sister-in-law!" Li Aimei didn't stand on ceremony with Yun Jin, knowing that Yun Jin didn't care about the ticket money, and that if she kept refusing, it would only create distance.
Knowing that Yun Jin and her mother were going to spend their summer vacation at the garrison, He Zizhen was originally going to go too, but since her mother wasn't going, she had to stay at home. Her sister-in-law said that she had enrolled her in a class at the Children's Palace so that she could attend an interest class.
He Zizhen almost cried, feeling wronged: "Nian Gao must miss her sister!"
Little Rice Cake nodded: "Sister, wait for me to come back and bring you something delicious."
"crayfish?"
The little rice cake nodded.
"Barbecue?"
Little Rice Cake nodded again.
"Grilled fish?"
Little Rice Cake's mouth watered: "Great!"
Yun Jin watched the two sisters talking about food and almost cried with envy. Before leaving, she discussed it with Mother He and they had a barbecue at home the night before, with everyone helping out.
Grilled meat, grilled fish, grilled shrimp, and grilled chives are all on the menu.
With such a commotion in He's mother's yard, many people in the neighborhood came over after smelling the aroma. If they didn't have enough meat, they would have plenty of roasted eggplant, roasted potatoes, and roasted corn. Brushed with oil and sprinkled with barbecue seasoning, it smelled amazing.
Father He invited a few old friends over, and as they drank some wine and ate roasted potatoes, he recalled how, during the war, potatoes would freeze solid, and if you took a bite, you'd almost lose your teeth.
I almost choked after taking a bite of the bean noodles.
As he talked, looking at the children gathered around, eager to try grilling the meat, he sighed, "Kids these days are so lucky."
Yun Jin brought them some grilled meat skewers and said, "We are blessed with good fortune now, all thanks to you guys who fought for it. We're so grateful to you all. Come on, eat more and enjoy this blessing!"
"I love hearing that!"
"That guy from Sichuan married a wonderful wife!"
"You're a lucky guy, you have a good wife and a filial daughter-in-law!"
The praised father took a sip of wine with a happy smile. Looking at his filial son, knowing that he had bad teeth, he specially brought him a roasted eggplant: "Grandpa, try it, the eggplant is delicious!"
"Good boy, Grandpa likes eggplant!" Dad He was very obliging and took a bite of the garlic eggplant. And you know what? Eggplant tasted really good when grilled like this.
Others were envious.
When everyone's having barbecue, how could Sun Sijia be missing? Even though she's pregnant, she doesn't want to squeeze in with the others, and when she wants something, she directs He Zizhen: "Zizhen, I want grilled corn!"
"Are the chicken wings cooked? I want to eat them!"
"Is it okay to eat the grilled fish now?"
Why did you give me mutton?
He Zizhen was being bossed around, and after being criticized for giving Sun Sijia chives that she didn't like, He Zizhen exploded: "Take whatever you want to eat, I don't have time to serve you!"
Sun Sijia said aggrievedly, "I'm pregnant."
"It's not my child. Whose child are you carrying? Go find them." He Zizhen resigned herself to her fate.
Sun Sijia's eyes turned red with anger as she looked towards He's mother.
