Little Rice Cake clenched his fist: "Yay! When I grow up, I want to learn to fly an airplane!"
They watched for an unknown amount of time. After the plane flew away, they were reluctant to look away and sat in the square watching from a distance as a flock of peace doves flapped their wings and flew into the sky.
Little Niangao was overjoyed: "Mom, Grandpa Li's pigeons are here too. He raises a lot of pigeons, and he even gave me pigeon eggs to eat. They were delicious!"
"Let's go back and see if the pigeons have returned yet?" Yun Jin knew that Grandpa Li's pigeons had been selected, and the old man had been showing them off in the courtyard for several days, so it was hard not to know.
Among that flock of peace doves, there must be one belonging to Grandpa Li's family.
Yun Jin asked, "Would you like to raise pigeons?"
Little Rice Cake nodded and then shook her head: "Bean Bun doesn't like pigeons."
Yun Jin patted her head. This child knew what she was doing. Between the dog and the pigeon, she didn't get bored and chose Doubao.
Doubao's life has been made worthwhile by this resolute choice.
After watching the pigeons, Yun Jin and the others didn't stay to watch any longer. They knew that once everyone left, the roads would be full of people, so they left early to avoid traffic jams.
Back home, Xiao Niangao excitedly told everyone about seeing airplanes and pigeons, and how she even went to Grandpa Li's house to see the pigeons.
Grandpa Li, who was counting pigeons, said proudly, "My pigeons have all flown back. Good pigeons, they know the way home. They're all clucking and coming to eat. They must be tired from flying!"
Little Rice Cake cupped her face: "What an amazing pigeon! It's as smart as Bean Bun. Bean Bun will come back even if it runs away!"
Grandpa Li was in a good mood and teased Little Rice Cake on purpose: "Can Bean Bun fly?"
Little Rice Cake shook its head.
"Do steamed buns lay eggs?"
Little Rice Cake shook her head again.
Grandpa Li said deliberately, "It seems that Doubao is not as smart as the pigeon!"
"Doubao is smart too. Doubao can wag its tail, sit down, roll around, and even understand what I'm saying. Our Doubao is so smart!" Xiao Niangao argued vehemently, hugging Doubao and showing off.
Grandpa Li was overwhelmed by her adorable boasting. Looking at her big, bright eyes, wagging her tail, and tugging at his trouser leg with her paws, not allowing her to say that she was not as smart as a pigeon, Grandpa Li admitted, "Your Doubao is indeed very smart."
Little Rice Cake's face beamed with joy.
Little Bean Bun let out a satisfied bark.
Mr. He returned home very late that day.
Little Niangao was still awake, waiting for her father to come back. She asked him when he would be back when she saw the tall, handsome man supporting her grandfather as he returned, looking so radiant.
Little Rice Cake rubbed her eyes, thinking she was seeing things.
She recognized him from his eyes; he was the one she had been waiting for.
Little Nian Gao excitedly leaped out, shouting joyfully, "Mommy, come quick! Daddy's back! It's Daddy!"
