Once He Tingchuan returned, Li Aimei was able to retire gracefully.
Yun Jin asked Li Aimei to take five fish back. The apprentices had a good harvest today. She had scraped the fish meat off the fish that were brought over and made fish balls. There were still several fish left, so she asked Li Aimei to take them back and braise them or pan-fry them.
The vegetables I stole from my other sisters-in-law will take another meal to finish tonight.
Fish balls are made into soup, which Yunjin will eat tonight.
He Tingchuan cooked the fish ball soup for dinner. Knowing that Yun Jin didn't like scallions, he added some greens. After boiling it, I tasted a sip of the delicious fish soup, and it was indeed very tasty.
Yun Jin praised the food as she ate, making anyone who didn't know better think that He Tingchuan was an excellent cook.
He Tingchuan drank some himself, but it wasn't anything special.
However, since no one else complained, he had no reason to complain about his cooking skills.
After a satisfying meal, the young couple went for a walk.
He Tingchuan inquired about Yun Jin's condition these past few days, and Yun Jin replied, "I've been eating, drinking, and sleeping all day. I just wonder what my husband is doing now, whether he's eaten or drunk anything."
Is he still alive?
Ha ha!
Yun Jin certainly wouldn't dare say those words aloud.
He Tingchuan paused, a warmth spreading through his heart. He had thought she was heartless, but thankfully she still had some sense and knew to care about her man.
He was pleased inside, but said aloud, "Don't worry, I'll take good care of myself while I'm away from home, and I eat on time every day."
If Yun Jin hadn't seen the smug smile on his lips, she would have almost believed his lies.
Sure enough, all the male protagonists in novels are the same—stubborn and unyielding.
“Even if you can take care of yourself, it’s not like I’m not around. I’m bound to overthink things. After all, you’re the father of my child!” Yun Jin’s virtuous wife and loving mother demeanor warmed He Tingchuan’s heart, a warmth he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Just as He Tingchuan was about to say something, he saw Yun Jin point her flashlight at the lotus pods in the lotus field: "What are those? They look edible. I haven't eaten lotus pods this year!"
He Tingchuan followed Yun Jin's gaze and saw a lotus field that their leader had dug out in his private plot. It was said that the division commander's wife liked to eat lotus roots, so she brought them from her hometown and planted them in this field.
Yun Jin had been eyeing it for a long time, but she was too shy to make a move.
Others might not know, but Yun Jin did: the division commander's wife was only remotely related to He Tingchuan's family.
He certainly dares to do what others wouldn't.
Sure enough, seeing that Yun Jin wanted to eat, He Tingchuan immediately reached out and picked a lotus seedpod, and then picked the remaining dozen or so, and put them all in front of Yun Jin: "Eat up, it must be my daughter who wants to eat, right?"
Yun Jin almost burst out laughing: "Yeah, your daughter wants to eat it."
She knew how to play the innocent, so she peeled the first lotus seed and gave it to He Tingchuan.
He Tingchuan shook his head, indicating that she should eat it herself.
Yun Jin didn't stand on ceremony; she held a lotus seedpod in her hand and ate it as she walked.
He Tingchuan took the rest.
As the two approached the compound, they saw someone coming towards them with a flashlight. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was the owner of the lotus pond, the division commander, and his wife.
The elderly couple had just finished eating and were out for a stroll. They hadn't checked on their lotus roots and flowers for a while, and thinking that the lotus pods should be ready by now, they decided to take advantage of the relatively late hour to see if there were any edible ones while they were walking.
When they encountered He Tingchuan and his group on the road, He Tingchuan remained completely calm.
Yun Jin acted as if she knew nothing at all, and even enthusiastically handed a lotus seedpod to the division commander's wife: "It's not too old or too young, it's delicious, try it!"
The division commander's wife couldn't refuse his hospitality, so she ate one and her eyes lit up: "It's really good, the grains are plump and the lotus seeds aren't bitter. They'll be too old in a few days, so it's perfect to eat them now."
"Right? If you like, take some more home to eat. I can't finish it all by myself." Yun Jin said, feigning politeness.
The division commander's wife had no right to compete with a pregnant woman for food, so she smiled and waved her hand, saying, "No need, no need. We grew some ourselves. We'll just pick a few later. You can keep them to eat slowly."
Yun Jin nodded, half-heartedly.
The division commander's wife asked curiously, "Where did you pick these lotus pods? They taste almost the same as the ones at my house. I guess the ones I grow at home are ready to eat too."
Yun Jin looked at He Tingchuan, who showed no remorse for stealing someone else's lotus pods.
Yun Jin smiled awkwardly: "It seems to be the division commander's family."
Division Commander's Wife: "!!!"
Division Commander: "???"
Yun Jin put on her acting skills and slapped her mouth: "It's all my fault. I saw lotus pods and wanted to eat them, so I couldn't resist picking one to try. Who knew he would pick them all in one go?"
He Tingchuan, who was taking the blame, nodded: "I'll dig lotus roots for the division commander to apologize in winter."
"No need, I can dig them myself." What a joke! If you let this kid dig lotus roots, someone else's wife might just say she wants to eat lotus roots and dig up all the lotus roots from his yard.
The division commander's wife persisted, "Are there really none left?"
"There should still be some, after all, it's dark, there must be some we didn't see." Yun Jin didn't want to disappoint her division commander's wife.
The division commander's wife thought about it and agreed.
He Tingchuan looked away guiltily. While others might have poor vision in the dark, he was different; his eyes were like rulers.
"How about these lotus pods..." Yun Jin said with a reluctant expression.
The division commander's wife, who was a distant relative, had no right to take it back: "If you like it, keep it for yourself. It's just a few lotus pods. You can pick them and that's fine. There are still more in the ground anyway."
Yun Jin was just waiting for her to say this: "I'd be so sorry. When we're digging lotus roots, please make sure my husband helps out, otherwise I'll feel too embarrassed to eat the lotus seeds."
"Alright, we'll ask Commander He to come and help with digging lotus roots." We'll have to send out quite a few sections.
Didn't everyone say that He Tingchuan didn't like this wife from the countryside?
