Chapter 86 Little Rice Cake

Looking at He Tingchuan, who was home every day, Yun Jin asked curiously, "How long did you take maternity leave?"

He Tingchuan boiled an apple and pear for her to avoid making her feel uncomfortable from eating something too cold: "I'll return to the team after you finish your postpartum confinement. Don't worry, I've made all the arrangements!"

Yun Jin was surprised: "You can take a month off?"

He Tingchuan nodded and used a fork to feed her the hot apple: "Yes, I'll take my annual leave and family visit leave together."

"That's fine too." Yun Jin will be in confinement for a month, and even with Sister Li's help, she still hopes He Tingchuan can be by her side.

Did you call your parents about me giving birth?

He Tingchuan was stunned.

Yun Jin urged, "How could you forget something so important? Go call Mom and tell her, she's waiting for this!"

He Tingchuan said calmly, "It doesn't matter if it takes a little more time. You eat the fruit first, and I'll go out again after you fall asleep."

Yun Jin let him go, and since no one else was in a hurry, she wasn't either.

While eating fruit, she watched He Tingchuan skillfully change her daughter's diapers. This child eats, drinks, and poops; she eats until she's full, sleeps until she's full, poops when she's full, and cries when she's hungry—she's never still.

He Tingchuan was exhausted, but he was happy to do it all. When he came back, he went to see his daughter. When he held his daughter, his eyes were gentle and tender, even more so than when he looked at her. Yun Jin was so jealous: "Have you thought about what name to give your daughter?"

He Tingchuan thought a lot about it, but he always felt that those names were too common and not good enough for his well-behaved and lovely daughter.

"What do you want to call me?"

Looking at her apple-shaped little girl, Yun Jin asked, "How's Little Apple?"

You are my little apple, I can never love you enough...

Yun Jin almost couldn't help but start singing.

He Tingchuan frowned: "There seems to be a child downstairs named Little Apple."

Yun Jin's daughter certainly can't share the same name as someone else: "Little Pear?"

"Li Aiguo's younger sister is named Li Zi."

Yun Jin: "...How about Little Pomegranate? I like eating pomegranates, so how about that name?"

He Tingchuan said with disdain, "The nickname is fine, but if the formal name is He Shiliu, it's similar to my sister's name, which is He Ximei."

Yun Jin gave up: "This won't do, that won't do, so what do you suggest we call it?"

He Tingchuan looked down at his adorable and cuddly daughter, and then, as if remembering something, asked, "How about rice cake?"

Yun Jin: "...New Year's cake?"

Yun Jin thought, "It's not impossible."

“The nickname ‘Nian Gao’ is fine, but we need to think of a new formal name. Ask your parents if they have any ideas. We’ll choose the formal name from the nickname to give them a chance to participate.” Yun Jin felt that she was quite easy to get along with.

He Tingchuan nodded.

After Yun Jin fell asleep and Xiao Niangao also fell asleep, he asked Aunt Li to look after her while he went to call Mother He and the others.

When Mrs. He answered the phone and heard He Tingchuan's voice, she excitedly asked, "Did your wife give birth? What did she give birth to? Is it a granddaughter or a grandson?"

"Congratulations, Mom! It's a granddaughter named Xiao Niangao. She's incredibly well-behaved and adorable. Mom will definitely love her." He Tingchuan's face couldn't hide his fatherly love when he talked about his daughter.

Mrs. He was already prepared, so she wasn't too disappointed: "My daughter is good, my daughter is good too. Are you and your daughter safe and sound?"

"Mom, don't worry, they're both safe and sound. We've given them the nickname 'Nian Gao' (meaning 'New Year Cake'), and your daughter-in-law said she'll save their formal names for you and Dad to choose together." He Tingchuan still knew how to flatter Yun Jin.

Sure enough, Mrs. He immediately felt valued: "Your father has already chosen a name. If it is a granddaughter, she will be named He Zizhu, with the character 'Zhu' meaning pearl, which, together with your eldest brother's name 'Zizhen,' makes 'pearl.'"

He Tingchuan had no objection to the name; he would ask Yun Jin when he got back.

Mother He continued, "If it's a grandson, we'll name him He Zirong, meaning the prosperity and flourishing of the nation."

He Tingchuan listened without saying anything. He was afraid that this name would not be used. He Tingchuan realized after having Nian Gao that he only had so much fatherly love. If he gave it to Nian Gao, he probably wouldn't have any other love to give to the other.

All he wanted to do was to take good care of the rice cakes.

Mother He inquired about Yun Jin's situation and learned that she had gone home to recuperate after childbirth. She instructed He Tingchuan to take good care of her during this time, not to let her do any work, not to make her angry, and not to make her cry, and so on and so forth.

If it weren't for the high cost of phone calls, Mrs. He would have talked for one or two hours.

"Do you still have the bird's nest and sea cucumber I sent before? Mom will send some donkey-hide gelatin to your wife later so she can have some nourishment." Mother He thought that since she had given birth to a daughter for the He family, she couldn't treat her poorly.

He Tingchuan didn't refuse, and after chatting for a few minutes, he hung up the phone.

He was afraid that if he left for too long, Yun Jin and the others would wake up and look for him.

When He Tingchuan rushed back, Yun Jin and her daughter were fast asleep, while Sister Li and Sister Gao were chatting at her doorstep.

After returning home, He Tingchuan couldn't get enough of the mother and daughter, looking at the older one and then the younger one, his face full of love.

When Yun Jin woke up, she saw He Tingchuan staring at them with a tender expression, which made her blush: "Don't you get tired of looking at me every day?"

He Tingchuan shook his head, poured Yun Jia a glass of warm water, watched her drink it, and then helped her get down and walk around.

Yun Jin saw the sweater that she hadn't finished knitting and said regretfully, "I originally wanted to finish knitting it before my confinement period, but who knew that the baby would come more than ten days early, catching me off guard. I can only wait until after my confinement period to finish it."

He Tingchuan glanced at the sweater, which was only a third of the way through knitting, and raised an eyebrow.

In the afternoon, after Yun Jin and Xiao Niangao finished eating, the two of them fell asleep again. He Tingchuan took the sweater that Yun Jin hadn't finished and went to Sister-in-law Gao: "Sister-in-law, how do you knit this sweater? I'm at home with nothing to do anyway, can you teach me and see if I can do it?"
