When I first met Qin Bai, I didn't understand why anyone would rummage through such a dirty trash can.
A small black dog followed behind him, with only a patch of white on its forehead and between its eyebrows.
She looks quite nice, but there seems to be something wrong with her legs; she walks with a limp.
Sometimes, Qin Bai would have to turn back and wait for it for a while before continuing forward.
Driven by curiosity, I followed him for a short distance.
Every time he saw some old cardboard boxes and beverage bottles, he would carefully put them in his bag as if they were treasures, and then continue walking.
"Qin Bai, here's some scrap paper you don't need, do you want it?" An auntie from a shop waved to him.
"Aunt Zhang, I'm here."
That's how I learned his name.
After watching him bow to that aunt, I mentally labeled him again.
A polite but dirty child.
Then, I got a little bored and left.
When I got home, I told my dad about it.
"Yaoyao, not everyone has money to eat their fill. The little kid you saw today is actually very good."
"Perhaps he was going through some difficulties at home, which is why he went to scavenge through those garbage, just to exchange them for some money at the recycling station."
"So you can't look down on him, you know? There are very few sensible children like him anymore."
I nodded vigorously.
I never knew he was so amazing. In my mind, his image has changed.
A polite and well-mannered child.
For a long time afterward, I didn't see him.
I guess he's from another elementary school, and it was just a coincidence that he came here that day.
Before we knew it, it was the dead of winter, and snowflakes began to fall from the sky.
On the playground, I grabbed a handful of snow and threw it at Shen Muyao.
She just stood there dumbfounded, not knowing how to fight back.
"Come and have a snowball fight with me!"
"It will freeze your hands."
"That's how snowball fights are done, right? You mean...?"
Then, I saw that familiar figure.
He was wearing a thin down jacket, but no hat or gloves.
His little face was red from the cold, and he was still carrying that big bag on his back, but it seemed he hadn't gotten anything today.
The little black dog was still following behind him, but it was shivering from the cold.
"Ring~~~"
It was time for class. Shen Muyao saw me spacing out and tugged at my sleeve.
"You go to class first, I'm going to the restroom."
Then he ran towards the school wall.
I nimbly jumped out; this kind of thing is still very simple for me.
Then, he followed behind Qin Bai.
Actually, I don't know why I followed him. Maybe I just felt sorry for him.
I walked over as he rummaged through the trash can.
Why aren't you in school?
Qin Bai was surprised that someone would call him. He paused for a moment and then turned to look at me.
Upon realizing the person was a stranger, he turned back and continued rummaging through the trash can, taking out a bottle and putting it in his bag.
Why aren't you saying anything?
Then......
He actually left without even turning his head.
At that time, I felt very embarrassed.
At school, because of my cute appearance, my classmates treat me like a little princess. I've never encountered such a situation before.
I caught up with him and asked in a huff, "Why aren't you in school? Are you off today?"
He remained silent and continued walking forward.
"Hey, don't go!"
That's just how people are sometimes; the more unattainable something is, the more they want it.
Especially at that age, I just wanted to ask about his situation, since my dad had said that he might be having difficulties at home and that he was a very good kid.
I ran up to him, took off my gloves, and handed them to him.
"This is for you."
I was quite pleased with myself. Since you didn't want to talk to me, I figured you'd definitely accept the gift.
After all, in such cold weather, how could anyone refuse a pair of warm gloves?
Although I'm a little reluctant to part with the pink cat pattern on it.
But the grateful look I had imagined did not appear.
He stopped and simply said, "Thank you."
Then they walked past me and continued forward.
I was stunned. How could there be such a strange person? Does he not accept other people's kindness?
I turned around and continued following them.
"Your name is Qin Bai, right? Are you cold?"
Have you had lunch yet? Are you hungry?
"Is there any difficulty in your family? Can you tell me about it?"
I followed behind like a shadow, but all I got in return was a silent response.
Finally, I set my sights on that little black dog.
I went to the supermarket and bought two sausages.
After peeling it, I placed it in front of it and said, "Eat up, it's delicious."
The little black dog looked at the sausage with anticipation, but it didn't eat it; it just turned to look at Qin Bai.
"Little Black, let's go."
The man and his dog walked away without looking back.
I stomped my feet in anger and looked down at the sausage on the ground.
Why is this person so stubborn? They've already peeled it off and put it on the ground, and you still won't let Little Black eat it? Really...
I'm so angry!
When I returned to school, I was scolded by the teacher again, which made me even angrier.
Qin Bai, don't let your aunt see you next time.
I swore through gritted teeth.
Perhaps it was from that time onward that I, without even realizing it, began to keep him in my heart.
