Luo Hongqing picked up his wine glass and drank it all in one gulp.
His forlorn expression was tinged with sadness.
"During my years in the Luo family, let alone living a carefree life, even having enough to eat and wear was a problem."
"Qin Bai, do you think I'm exaggerating a bit?"
"No, often the people in big families are more ruthless than you think."
“They don’t want to talk about me, they won’t let me go out, and even when outsiders talk about me as a fool, they take it out on me, feeling that I’ve embarrassed them.”
"Over time, all the servants who wanted to take care of me were driven away, and the entire Luo family wanted me to fend for myself."
Qin Bai wasn't too surprised; his childhood experiences weren't much better than Luo Hongqing's.
The only thing that comforted him was that he still had his mother, who was with him through thick and thin.
"Second Uncle, doesn't Luo He know about this?"
Does knowing or not knowing matter?
A simple sentence made Qin Bai understand a lot.
The entire Luo family was under Luo He's surveillance; it was impossible for him to be completely unaware.
In his eyes, only those who could contribute to the Luo family were useful.
As for people like Luo Hongqing, once they die, that's that.
Even sons are the same.
Pieces that are no longer useful cannot be placed back on the board.
Luo Hongqing picked up his wine glass again, the spicy liquid going down his throat, bringing a blush to his face and a gleam to his eyes.
"It was at that moment that a little angel dressed like a doll appeared in my life."
“I remember it very clearly. It was New Year’s Eve. Everyone was sitting in the main hall, listening to my father’s earnest teachings.”
"Meanwhile, I hid in a corner outside, wearing a tattered sweater, drooling over the food inside that I couldn't name."
“I dare not go in. If I disturb their enjoyment, they might throw me into the lake.”
"Hunger is a terrible feeling, especially for someone who hasn't eaten for two days."
"Just as I was watching them longingly, the little angel came out carrying a chicken leg and two steamed buns."
"She didn't say anything, she just stuffed the things into my arms, then turned around and ran back inside."
"At that time, I didn't quite understand what she meant. My mind couldn't process it at all. I was just terrified, thinking that someone had discovered us."
"After a while, I don't know where she found a brand new down jacket and put it on me, and she even helped me put it on very carefully."
"After she finished doing all that, she smiled at me and then ran back."
"That night, I realized that chicken legs could taste so delicious."
"Hehe, you might not believe it, but that was the best meal I've ever had in my life."
Luo Hongqing looked out the window at the locust tree, its dark brown branches swaying in the cold wind.
Qin Bai didn't speak; he understood the feeling of falling into an abyss and then being pulled out.
Just like Pei Wanyin back then.
A warm smile graced Luo Hongqing's lips.
He continued, "For a long time afterward, that little girl would always find me in a corner of the Luo family compound."
“Every time they come, they bring some food and then sit quietly beside me.”
"I wasn't thinking straight at the time, and I didn't know why she was so nice to me, so I asked her."
Do you know what she said?
She said, "Because you are my second uncle."
"Hehe, Second Uncle, so I'm those people's Second Uncle." Luo Hongqing burst into laughter, laughing so loudly that tears welled up in his eyes.
After a long while.
Luo Hongqing looked at Qin Bai: "Now do you understand why I helped Qingyan? Because during the darkest period of my life, she was the one who kept me alive."
"In her eyes, it might just be a trivial matter, and she may have even forgotten that she once helped a fool."
"But in my opinion, this kind of kindness must be repaid with one's life."
......
It was already late at night when Qin Bai returned to the villa.
When he got off the bus, he was swaying unsteadily, so the driver quickly ran down to help him steady.
He'd met his match at the dinner table today. If He Lingyu hadn't stopped him at the last minute, neither he nor Luo Hongqing would have been able to walk out of the table standing up.
Qin Bai looked up at the house number, and after confirming that it was his home, he opened the door.
The living room was pitch black, but a faint scent of sandalwood lingered in his nostrils, which helped him regain some of his senses.
He tiptoed off his shoes and glanced at the sofa.
A few minutes later.
Qin Bai slowly exhaled.
He threw the leather shoes on the ground, turned on the light in the entryway, and swaggered inside.
"I thought my vengeful mother would be waiting for me. Sure enough, I was right to come back at this time. She's probably been dragged away by some girlfriend."
Qin Bai muttered to himself as he walked toward the refrigerator.
After drinking so much liquor, all I want now is a glass of ice water to dilute it.
The moment he opened the refrigerator door, a chill swept over his entire body.
He couldn't help but shiver, a bad feeling welling up inside him.
Really?
Could it be...?
Before he could continue thinking, a gust of cold wind whistled and whipped his buttocks.
Snap!
Qin Bai couldn't dodge in time, and this hit him right in the bullseye, making him wince in pain.
"I'll let you run, let's see where you can run to this time?"
Cheng Jing knew her son too well; given his cautious nature, she knew she would definitely be discovered if she sat on the sofa waiting for him.
