Chapter 22 I'm Here

Early morning on May Day.

It rained sometime last night, and it's quite cool and the air is very fresh.

Chen Lu got up with a yawn, drew back the curtains to let in fresh air, and then went to wash up.

Li Sinian and Zheng Haoyu are from out of town, so they left early to catch the high-speed train.

Only Jiang Chao was still sleeping like a log.

"Boss, what are your plans for May Day?" Chen Lu slung his bag over his shoulder, intending to kick Jiang Chao, but in the end he only pushed him.

"Going on a trip with Liu Yan, taking the high-speed train this afternoon."

Fuck you.

The kick still went out.

Chen Lu was sending messages to Liang Zhirou as he walked down the street.

Chen Lu: Good morning, what are you doing?

Liang Zhirou: I just got dressed and am getting ready to go to my part-time job.

The girl replied quickly; Chen Lu received a reply immediately after sending the message.

Whenever Chen Lu asked her what she was doing out of boredom, she would answer earnestly.

Chen Lu: You found a new job?

Liang Zhirou: Yeah! Still handing out flyers, over at the China World Trade Center.

Chen Lu smiled and continued tapping the screen: It's good.

He was typing as he walked when he almost tripped and twisted his ankle.

He then put on his Bluetooth headset thoughtfully and made a call to Liang Zhirou.

He was certain that Liang Zhirou was looking at her phone, but for some reason it took more than ten seconds for the call to go through, and then a gentle voice came from the phone.

"Hello--"

The girl's voice sounded muffled, as if she had just woken up not long ago.

"I almost twisted my ankle while typing with you just now, it scared me to death. Let's talk on the phone instead," Chen Lu complained. It's really scary to trip and fall when you're not paying attention.

Liang Zhirou's voice became somewhat anxious, "I...I'm sorry, are you alright?"

This left Chen Lu completely confused. How did he end up being wrong again?

"It's okay, I reacted quickly." Chen Lu yawned lazily, secretly relieved that he had almost twisted his ankle.

This was the first time the two of them had ever talked on the phone.

The person on the other end of the phone seemed relieved and then asked, "Have you had breakfast?"

"No, the food at the breakfast shop isn't as good as yours."

Chen Lu joked, without directly saying that he didn't go to eat because he was too lazy.

Modern college students are lucky if they can eat two meals a day on time; nobody wants to sacrifice their sleep-in time to eat breakfast.

"No...you have to eat on time. Or should I bring it to you?"

The naive girl made a rather unwise suggestion.

Chen Lu smiled and said, "Then bring it to my house. Remember to give some to my family."

"Then, never mind."

Liang Zhirou, who had already run to the kitchen to start cooking porridge, sat back down on the bed.

Chen Lu is cunning; I didn't realize for a moment that he was going to use this opportunity to bully me.

They both fell silent for a while, a moment that was not uncommon when they were alone together.

But no one felt awkward; on the contrary, both of them enjoyed it, even just quietly feeling each other's presence.

"I don't think I've made any progress."

After a long silence, Liang Zhirou spoke first.

"When I was looking for a part-time job yesterday, the store manager asked me questions, and I still couldn't say a word..."

Chen Lu chuckled softly, his tone gentle, "Don't rush, just take it one step at a time."

Self-confidence needs to be gradually increased as your self-worth improves.

Otherwise, it wouldn't be called self-confidence, it would be called ordinary self-confidence.

In other words... you just need to work hard to improve yourself, and take it slow.

Noticing that the girl was still listening attentively, Chen Lu continued, "You've made significant progress. You definitely wouldn't have worn that school uniform before."

"I just feel like this isn't the same thing..."

"It's the same thing."

"Really..." Liang Zhirou was still a little doubtful.

He continued righteously, "How about you try wearing ancient costume next time? You really suit this kind of clothing."

You don't want your friends either...

"Can you please stop bullying me..." the girl interrupted him softly, her voice sounding aggrieved.

Chen Lu revealed a satisfied yet wicked smile, but it was quickly replaced by a serious expression. "Anyway, just relax and take your time. I'm here for you."

"Okay," Liang Zhirou replied softly, her suppressed emotions dissipating considerably.

She couldn't explain why, but hearing Chen Lu say "I'm here for you" really reassured her.

......

I always feel like time flies when I'm on the phone; the half-hour drive seems to pass in the blink of an eye.

After reluctantly hanging up the phone, Chen Lu scanned the QR code to pay and got off the car briskly.

As expected, there's still no difference.

That's the downside of going to university near home; during holidays, it doesn't feel like going home.

Other parents treat their children like treasures when they haven't been home for a long time—at least that's how it is for the first few days after they come home.

As soon as I opened the door when I got home, I heard the adults talking.

A relative I couldn't place was talking loudly, and I had no idea which of my many aunts or uncles she was.

Chen Lu's father, Chen Guanglin, and mother, Wang Xiaoxia, sat quietly to the side, listening with smiles on their faces.

His sister, Chen Mo, was also there.

Both "路" and "陌" mean road, and Chen Lu didn't know why his parents liked driving so much.

The girl was seventeen years old, in the prime of her life, and had grown into a beautiful young woman. She sat quietly to one side, occasionally responding with a polite chuckle, appearing well-behaved and sensible.
