Chapter 9 Chapter 9 Goodbye, Goodbye
The face of the person in the mirror was flushed, his hair was curly and scattered beside his ears, his hair was a little messy, his collar had marks from lying down, the blue veins on his arms showed through his fair skin, and there were several short red marks on the surface.
She didn't even realize when this was left behind.
She turned on the faucet, the rushing water washing over her heart like white noise. She reached out to smooth out her collar, but the moment she loosened her grip, the fabric shrank back. Frustrated, she decided to give up. She gripped the deodorant bottle, pressed the nozzle, and doused herself from head to toe.
I feel guilty like I was caught by my parents when I was in middle school secretly going to the Internet cafe.
She stretched out her hand and touched the water column. The air in the room was a little stuffy and the yellow light was flashing. It was the first time she saw it. She looked around in surprise, trying to figure out what was going on.
Bruno stood up and walked towards her. The bat opened its eyes, flapped its wings, and flew in. It looked around and found nothing unusual, so it hung upside down on the towel rack next to the door.
Something must have happened, but it wasn't serious. Bruno stayed by her side all the time.
"careful."
Perhaps because of nervousness, the water flow suddenly increased, and inadvertently, the wrist tilted upward, and the water rolled along the forearm, spilling onto the chest, wetting the shirt, and water droplets hung on the abdomen and thigh fabric.
The sting of cold made her cry out, and she retracted her hand, subconsciously leaning back. Someone grabbed her arm, and she looked down to see that she had only splashed water. The man pulled a brand new towel from the clip and handed it to her. His other hand reached across her waist and turned off the faucet.
"Wipe it off, be careful not to catch a cold."
She sighed and took the towel. The fabric was soft and fuzzy. She wiped the water away. Perhaps she was a little dizzy and too careless. Every time she touched it, she felt a little dazed, and today it was too long.
Her light-colored top clung to her body because it was wet, revealing her inner contours and a hint of flesh color. Bruno looked at her frown, her eyes fixed on the soaked clothes, probably troubled by it, and walked into the room in silence.
He came out with a new dress, exactly her size, and asked if she needed a change.
"No, I'll go back and change."
She was worried that doing so might cause a bad misunderstanding, as if the two of them had done something.
Seeing that she was unwilling, Bruno did not force her and instead took out a black cloak, which was originally used to keep out the rain and was a bit long for her.
She did not refuse, nor did she want others to see that she was soaked, so she turned around. The man put his hands around her shoulders, tied the laces in front of her neck, crossed the two pieces of fabric, and buckled them at the waist.
She was very cautious in this rare opportunity of close contact, willing to accept their spirit bodies, but if the sentinels got too close, they would stare at each other warily. Therefore, they didn't have much chance to get close.
Bruno stared at the work in his hands, almost tying the ribbon into a flower. The fabric hung down, the hem of the clothes touching the ground, wrapping her like a black dumpling.
"Thanks."
Without any unnecessary movements, after finishing, Bruno took a step back, looked up and down at the results, and confirmed that there was no problem. Then another urging voice came from outside the door.
She put the towel back on the clip and spread it out flat, then looked at her face in the mirror, made sure it wouldn't show, and turned to leave.
Bruno followed behind her. She bent down to pick up her laptop and handbag while walking along the coffee table. Her hair hung down by her ears, resting on her smooth jawline. She walked towards the door without stopping.
Bruno: "Will you come again?"
Her hand on the doorknob, she turned back in confusion after hearing this, tilting her head in confusion, "Of course."
Seeing him like this, as if he was about to be separated from her forever, she was a little amused and teased in a light-hearted tone, "Why, you can't bear to leave me?"
"right."
The sudden revelation of her inner thoughts left her at a loss for words. Just then, a little bat flew in front of her. She reached out to catch it, pretending to touch her head to divert her gaze. "What are you thinking about?"
"I have to return your cloak tomorrow, so of course I'll see you later."
Bruno: "I won't be here tomorrow. I have to go on a mission. This time I'm going to a very far place."
There are three people in the team, one person is in charge of the outside support, and the other two have their own responsibilities. He needs to explore the water part of the cave that stretches for hundreds of kilometers alone.
"Ah..." She didn't expect the sudden farewell to happen so soon. "Is it dangerous?"
He felt awkward inside. He wanted to tell the truth and see that she was sincerely thinking about him, to prove that she cared about him, but he also didn't want to make her worry.
"No, it's just too far. It takes a long time to go back and forth."
He was afraid that if he left for too long, the other party would have forgotten him when he came back. After all, the guide never lacked suitors, and they had only had a few contacts.
He needed to take responsibility for his own actions, so he had to leave.
But he also had his own selfish thoughts, "If I die, my..."
Hearing his bad start, Xu Shanshan immediately interrupted him and said, "Don't make random promises!" She said solemnly, "Don't die. Come back alive."
Even after returning from the danger zone, she still didn't have much of a sense of reality. Rationally, since so many guides were accompanying the team to consolidate and expand the border, it was clear that the world wasn't very safe.
The last time she said goodbye to Xia Guangli, his attitude was as relaxed as if they were going out for an outing, and she didn't realize that he would be going on a dangerous mission.
Today was the first time that someone she knew said goodbye to her. Although she was not very familiar with him and even had some opinions about him because of the unpleasantness of their first meeting, it did not mean that she would be indifferent to the danger he was in.
Death is a serious matter.
Seeing him stunned, she couldn't help but repeat herself, "I won't forget you, so come back alive, understand?"
Holding the hem of his clothes with one hand, he said, "I'll return the raincoat and cloak to you when you come back. I'll also treat you to some fruit. Don't you like that?"
"Let's go to the orchard together and pick and eat. At night, we'll play the game of 'tossing the ball'. I'll throw it out and see if it can catch it."
The little bat in his hand opened its mouth, revealing two small fangs. It obviously understood and was very interested. He looked down and thought that the other party was about to leave, so he took the spirit body back.
Bruno imagined that scene, and her words undoubtedly gave him a dose of reassurance. The corners of his mouth gradually raised, "It's a deal."
She pretended to be relaxed and said, "It's a pity that I have to treat them to a dinner this weekend, so you can't take advantage of me."
The harmless jokes made the interaction more natural. She had been overly polite and reserved when they were together before, but perhaps this proved that she was beginning to regard him as a friend with whom she could talk.
"Then I'm at a big loss."
He was well aware that he lacked advantages over others, whether it was his direct superior who he worked with day and night, his savior, or the gentle and decent captain.
Spirits can be either fierce and majestic, noble and elegant, or petite and adorable—he's not one of them. He's witnessed her gaze fixed on the ethereal red-crowned crane, caressing its long, white feathers, her eyes sparkling, and he's also heard of her preference for birds.
She was even more interested in small insects than he was. Bats had always been considered ominous, a symbol of darkness, terror, evil, and uncleanliness. He anticipated that she would not choose him.
He had fought hard for this opportunity and was punished by the captain just because he hoped that she would look at him more among the sentries.
When his spirit body appeared in front of her, his eyes trembled, his fingers shook, and he shrank back unconsciously. She was also afraid, but still stretched out her hand and let it lie in her palm.
She treated everyone equally, without favoritism or exclusion. Even to the person who saved her life, she was mostly just grateful. But her reaction to her superiors was different.
Because the spirit body had just come into contact with the guide, he was unable to control his possessiveness and jealousy, so he felt mentally distorted by the extra preference, developed a desire to destroy, and could not help but provoke the relationship between the two.
Why can you, but I can't? If she remained indifferent, he could still deceive himself and explain it to her, but if this kind of partiality was exposed, it would make people want to intervene and make that person their own.
She opened the door. Today, there were no clever little animals blocking the door. Instead, they surrounded her, trying all sorts of tricks to attract her attention and invite her to play with them.
As she walked out the door, the yellow lights in the rooms and corridors stopped flashing. What happened? She was just a little overdue.
Xie Yifei stood behind the door, not knowing how long he had been there. When he saw her dress, he looked at Bruno behind her with a scrutinizing gaze, his face distraught.
Ignoring him, Xie Yifei walked closer, leaned over and asked softly, "What happened?"
She shook her head. "It's okay."
"Boom, boom, boom..."
Steady footsteps emerged from the distance, and she heard the voice of her superior. He was asking others where she was. After getting the answer, the footsteps gradually approached.
Until he walked up to her and saw her outfit for the first time, he looked her up and down. Seeing that she was intact, he was obviously relieved. He dropped his hand from his waist and turned to look at the man beside him.
"Commander Shan Hao."
"Captain Xie Yifei."
She thought he would blame her in public, but he didn't. He just habitually put on a sour face and said, "Let's go, let's go eat together."
It seems that the prejudice between people is a huge mountain, and she misunderstood him.
The woman nodded and walked over. Shan Hao turned around and said goodbye: "We have other things to do, so we'll leave first."
Xie Yifei paused and said, "I'll go with you."
For some reason, Shan Hao's gaze lingered on his eyebrows and he actually agreed.
No way? Wouldn't that mean she'd be scolded in front of Captain Jie Yifei? She'd lose all face. Not to mention whether or not it existed, the sight of three people eating at the same table was also very strange. The stern commander and the approachable and considerate captain, and whether she should speak or not, she had no idea.
The three of them arrived at the elevator lobby one after another and pressed the down button. As they watched the floors gradually rise, Shan Hao suddenly remembered something. He walked to the left, heading for the guide's exclusive elevator, and waved to her, "Come here."
She didn't understand why she had to take this ride, but she just followed it over. Soon they arrived and the three of them followed her inside.
Something was absolutely wrong, why did he go against the norm?
She looked at the floodlight on the elevator wall and clasped her hands nervously. The man raised his hand and looked at his laptop, staring at the floor and the elevator entrance without saying a word.
Seeing that they were about to miss the cafeteria, she looked up at Captain Jie Yifei, who lowered his head and asked softly, "What's wrong?"
Thinking that her superior might not have noticed and the elevator was still going down, she couldn't help but quietly remind him, "We're almost at the cafeteria."
"We're not going to the cafeteria."
So where are we going to eat? She turned to look at Captain Jie Yifei, who gave her a soothing look. "Where are you taking her?"
Shan Hao saw the two people interacting through the mirror, frowned imperceptibly, turned his head, and the two people's eyes met. He responded coldly: "It has nothing to do with you."
The elevator clanked.
She was startled to find herself in someone's arms. After listening carefully, she realized it was the sound from next door. Curious, she wanted to move closer, but was held by the waist, unable to move. She wanted to ask him to let go, but the captain just shook his head.
The officer looked over and the elevator door slowly opened. "We're here."
"I won't move." She explained, hoping he would let her go. After all, it was embarrassing in front of her superior. After he let go, she immediately stood up and walked to her superior.
Xie Yifei walked out of the elevator, stopped, looked around, and then followed the two of them.
She always felt that they were making a bit of a fuss today.
Walking forward, the gate is not far away. The sunset dyes the outside into orange, which looks very special.
Suddenly, a low roar sounded, and then the ground shook, as if some huge monster was rushing towards her. She was stunned and saw the guards standing on both sides of the hall running towards her. Her heart suddenly stopped beating.
She turned slowly and looked back. A sturdy black rhino was running towards her. Its skin was rough and gray, and its hair was sparse. It had two horns on its forehead. The front horn was like a scimitar, and the back horn was straight. It looked like it was long enough to pierce her and hang her up.
Panic spread from my chest, time seemed to slow down, and I felt like I was about to be trampled by this "armored vehicle".
But clear, loud, and continuous gunshots rang out one after another. Seeing the distorted sentries going crazy, several of them drew their guns, and two gunshots rang out at the front.
She looked up and saw that it was her superior and Captain Jie Yifei. Almost subconsciously, they drew their pistols from their waists and fired at it without hesitation. The muzzles flashed until the magazines were empty and a wisp of green smoke came out.
They stared intently at the giant beast. She was not surprised by the commander's decisiveness, but she was surprised by the captain. He was always kind and considerate, but she didn't expect him to have such a tough attitude.
Her throat was choked and she couldn't speak. She turned around and saw the black rhino kneeling on the ground. Behind it, several guards holding a man with his head covered with a black sack also knelt down and fainted on the ground.
Without blinking, she deeply engraved the image in her mind. She felt her shoulders being pressed down, and a force urged her to turn around. The hat was lifted up and put on her head, blocking her sight.
"Walk."
Seeing that she was frightened, Xie Yifei gestured to Shan Hao, indicating that he would stay on the scene and let the two of them leave first. The man nodded, put his arm around her shoulders, and led her away half softly and half hard.
Even after she walked out of the door and was bathed in the orange light, she still felt as if she was in another world. She turned her head and tried to look back, but a pair of large hands blocked her sight, and her palms supported her cheeks. Cold and hard words came to her ears.
"Don't look, just keep going."
