Another Nansong and another Ma Tuan were pointing in their direction.
"How vicious! Is he trying to drive us both crazy?"
The hair on Nansong's tentacles were all stretched straight, like a frightened jellyfish.
But when she blinked, the rooftop was empty.
Ma Tuan also laughed when he heard this.
"I don't know much about him, but I don't think he would do this to us. This time, neither Broll nor Bai Di are with us. What we need to do is to get out of here as quickly as possible."
"But what are we going to do? We've searched this city all over, but we don't have a single clue. Do we have to wait until they both come?"
Nansong was a little depressed.
Ma Tuan also fell silent. They really couldn't find any related clues.
The two fell silent.
In the distance, a strange humming sound came from underground, like the trembling of some huge machine before starting.
Nan Song felt that all the hairs on his tentacles stood up in the same direction, as if sensing some invisible force field.
"Hey! Wait, aren't we in the same time?"
Nansong suddenly understood.
"Maybe not even in the same world...."
Ma Tuan:? ? !!
She reached out to grab the ball, but immediately found her fingers piercing his arm.
Ma Tuan also tried to touch her, but failed as well.
Their hands overlapped like holograms, yet there was no sense of substance.
"It's already started... How strange, we've encountered something different today."
Ma Tuan's voice began to become intermittent, and his body flickered like a TV screen with poor signal.
"Nansong, listen to me, no matter what happens, remember to—"
He didn't finish his words.
A dazzling white light burst out from between the two of them, and Nan Song instinctively covered his eyes with the tentacle hair.
When the light faded, she was alone on the roof.
"Ma Tuan?"
She called out, her voice piercing the suddenly silent air.
"Well, hopefully we can leave after this is over for today."
No response.
Nansong slowly stood up and found that the cityscape in the distance had also changed - the blue apartment building disappeared, replaced by a green area she had never seen before.
The sky was an unnatural purple-red, an eerie blend of dusk and dawn.
All her tentacle hairs suddenly pointed to the north, and she felt a strong pulling sensation.
Nansong knew that no matter what was there, she had no choice but to go there.
Before jumping off the roof, she took a last look at the place where Ma Tuan had just been lying - there were a few shiny fish scales left on the iron sheet, and a shallow water stain that was evaporating rapidly in the sunlight.
On the rooftop of another time and space, Ma Tuan sat alone, looking at a strand of indigo tentacle hair that had been entangled between his fingers at some point in his hand. It was turning into ordinary human hair at a speed visible to the naked eye.
In the distance, the outline of the city began to distort and reorganize, like clay being kneaded by invisible hands.
After thinking about it, Ma Tuan felt that it was useless for him to stay here.
Turning over, he suddenly thought of a place.
As I pushed open the creaking iron door, the damp and moldy smell immediately hit me.
This basement on the ground floor of the old building was their first stop when they first arrived in this city.
Several exposed wires hung from the peeling ceiling, and rusty bicycle parts and a few empty paint cans were piled in the corner.
"This place is still so trendy,"
He muttered, his webbed feet making small splashes in the puddle on the ground.
"Even cockroaches have to wear wellies."
The only light bulb in the basement flickered, casting swaying shadows on the mottled walls.
The graffiti and stickers they once thought were odd now looked like faded band posters and blurry children's drawings.
"Hey! What are you doing here?"
Nansong's voice suddenly came from behind him. Ma Tuan turned around and saw her standing at the stairs, her indigo-colored tentacled hair trembling slightly from running.
An inexplicable yellow halo leaked in from the crack in the door behind her, outlining a furry halo around her.
"Come and see if you've left anything behind."
Ma Tuan patted the dusty old sofa with his webbed hands, raising a cloud of dust.
"As expected." Nan Song said,
“They’ve been forcing us to come back here. Anyway, since we’ve arrived here, we can meet and talk.
"Tell me, I feel like you know this place?"
Nan Song raised his eyebrows and walked inside.
"It feels like you are really familiar with this place."
"No way," Ma Tuan squatted down and rummaged through the cardboard box, his webbed fingers leaving strange marks in the dust.
"You see, this is indeed where I lived as a child. I lived with my oldest brother."
His voice suddenly became low, and the gills under the mask twitched nervously.
"I don't know why the Lord brought me here."
Nansong's tentacle hair gently curled up a yellowed photo, which was a photo of two little boys standing at the door of the basement.
The young Ma Tuan didn't have a mask yet, and he was hugging another boy with a slightly gloomy face with a bright smile.
"Is this... your eldest brother?" she asked cautiously, her tentacles shrinking unconsciously.
Ma Tuan didn't answer, but suddenly pushed open the old wardrobe in the corner. With a sharp friction sound, a rusty iron ring was revealed on the floor. Nan Song's hair immediately stood up in alert - the iron ring was covered with a strange mucus, and in the dim light it glowed an eerie blue-green luster.
