Some people started to have doubts.
If we let them deal with the bandits the same way they did before, those people outside definitely won't have a chance!
However, doing so would require all the able-bodied men in the family to be mobilized, leaving the women to do all the housework.
“No need for that. Weiming is a thoughtful child. We just need to build a watchtower at each of the four corners of the village, and have four people guard it every day. If anything happens, we can beat the drums and gongs, and then the whole village will know.”
"However, Wanwan also said that she's afraid this watchtower can only keep out people, not evil spirits..."
Before the village head had even finished speaking, the people below were already whispering among themselves.
"What are we going to do? That little girl from the Lin family is right. Even if we can see people, we can't stop ghosts."
Wang Dazhu was especially worried, and he sighed along with the people next to him, saying, "Those starving ghosts ate all of my family's food. We have to be careful, we absolutely have to be careful!"
News travels fast in the village, and the story of the Wang family's encounter with a ghost could not be kept secret.
The villagers all nodded in agreement.
Those starving ghosts who devoured all of the Wang family's grain looked even more terrifying than bandits.
At least those bandits didn't eat all their food in two days, so they're not starving to death yet.
It was also thanks to this year's decent harvest that those starving ghosts, although they ate a lot, didn't have any interest in eating silver.
In order to survive, the Wang family had no choice but to reluctantly take some money from their savings and buy some grain from other people's homes.
But when they thought about all the money they had spent, Wang Dazhu and Zhao Chunniang felt heartbroken.
Now that they'd heard about the need to ward off ghosts, Wang Dazhu was the first to step forward. "Grandpa, how do we ward off ghosts?"
“Wanwan said,” the old man from the village headman straightened his expression and continued, “that she will draw up a blueprint in the next couple of days and ask us to build a sewer pipe on the ground according to the blueprint.”
"The...the drainpipe?"
"Yes, on the one hand, it will make drainage easier for our village. Even the water used for washing faces can flow back into the pond, so there won't be a shortage of water for irrigation. On the other hand, it can also be considered some kind of... formation? I'm not quite sure what it is, but Wanwan said that those ghosts won't dare to come near!"
"Great idea!" The villagers were overjoyed and praised the idea, saying, "This is a good idea! We won't waste water, and we can keep those evil spirits away!"
They have already experienced two years of drought, and no one can say for sure whether there will be a third year of drought.
Repairing the drainpipe can accumulate water, which seems like a good thing!
“Great! That’s the right thing to do. I’ll go dig the ditch in a bit!” Wang Dazhu said happily.
It was freezing cold, not a good time to work, but since it was all for the village and for themselves, no one objected and everyone was willing to work with Lin Weiming.
Lin Weiming arranged for all the men, women, and children in the village to participate. Except for some people who had to stay behind to take care of their families, he included all the other people who could work.
The men did the most strenuous work of digging ditches, and the mud they dug out, along with some of the mud left over from digging the ponds, was sent to the women to be fired into coarse pottery shards.
The village was poor and didn't have enough money to buy stone, so they could only use these rough pottery shards instead of stones to install in the sewers. If they had simply dug a ditch in the ground, it would have been washed away by mud and water in less than a year and quickly filled in and disappeared, thus losing its purpose.
Another group was assigned to cut down trees and build watchtowers.
The watchtower serves as a pedestrian surveillance system, and anyone, regardless of age or gender, can perform this task if they are attentive enough.
As Lin Wanyue watched the watchtower gradually rise higher, she pondered that she could retrieve a few telescopes from her spatial storage so that everyone could see further.
But... how is she supposed to explain this thing?
The telescope looked like something from this era.
But before she could think for long, her father grabbed her by the collar from behind and picked her up. "What are you thinking about, Wanwan? You seem so engrossed in your thoughts?"
"Father, isn't it almost New Year's?" Lin Wanyue asked, hugging her father.
Lin Weiming has been so busy these past few days that he completely forgot that the Chinese New Year is just over ten days away.
“Yes.” He took out a handful of fragrant roasted pine nuts from his pocket and handed them to Lin Wanyue. “Here, have some. By the time we finish our work, it will probably be around the New Year, and then we can relax and have a good holiday.”
Okay.
Lin Weiming has been quite happy lately.
He was busy assigning tasks to everyone. He wasn't physically exhausted, but he was certainly mentally drained.
But when he thought about how he arranged for Wang Hu to paste ceramic tiles every day, and how the busy boy had no time to go see his own little girl, he couldn't help but secretly chuckle.
Wang Hu was afraid that his house would be haunted again, so he worked almost as fast as a strong young man, and was also very hardworking and conscientious.
The one who receives the most praise among the children!
Wang Hu was a little shy at first, but after being praised a lot, he started to walk with his chest out and head held high, and he worked even faster.
Lin Weiming was very satisfied with this.
"Father." Lin Wanyue held fragrant pine nuts in her hand, and then rummaged through her bosom to pull out a hand warmer, which she gave to Lin Weiming: "It's cold, this will keep you warm."
"Huh?" Lin Weiming found it amusing. "What is this thing? Can it even keep you warm?"
