The villagers were eager to see what was going on.
But the Lin family home was just too quiet.
Lin Zhongyuan did take the exam, but after the exam, he remained the same as before, staying at home every day to read and write, and not going out to play.
They couldn't go directly to the Lin family to find him and ask how he did on the exam.
We're going to miss out on the excitement!
Although they couldn't watch the excitement, quite a few families were still chatting.
"Speaking of which, is Lin Zhongyuan capable of passing the exam?" Many people unconsciously ask this question in their own homes.
“It would be strange if he passed the exam! No matter how smart that child is, how old is he? Have you ever heard of someone becoming a scholar at the age of ten? That would have to be a child prodigy!” someone said with a shrug.
"But... what if he is the child prodigy?" Seeing how calm the Lin family was, I had a feeling that he was someone who could achieve great things.
The person next to him laughed and said, "Even if he is a child prodigy, it's all for nothing without a teacher. Our village teacher has been working as an accountant in the county town for so long, I wonder how he's doing now."
"By the way, speaking of which, my son used to study with Zhongyuan. Now he's covered in mud every day and can't be bothered to write a single word. I think the Lin family just has too much money now and can't stand not spending it!"
"Besides, given Lin Weiming's personality, if he doesn't show off and gloat a bit, there's definitely no hope for him."
This quickly convinced most of the villagers.
That's right!
Given Lin Weiming's attention-seeking nature, if he didn't show off, he probably didn't pass the exam.
Some people are relieved, while others are disappointed.
...
By the time the results were released, it was already the end of February. There was still a lot of farm work to be done, and all sorts of things that needed to be planted had to be put on the agenda.
However, Lin Zhongyuan's exam was a big deal, and even though he was extremely busy, Lin Weiming still made time to take him to the county town to have a look.
Fearing that the young lads might come along, Lin Weiming hung the cart frame on his own cow early in the morning.
Now that we have oxcarts, it's much more convenient than before when we had to walk to the county town.
Yesterday, when they heard that they were going to see the results, the kids got quite excited.
With so many people around, he dared not bring so many children along, fearing he wouldn't be able to take care of them all.
"Zhongyuan, let's go." Lin Zhongyuan had woken up early in the morning. Lin Weiming took some breakfast and water with him and was about to walk across the yard to knock on the study door to urge him to leave.
As soon as I got to the yard, I saw a lot of people gathered outside the gate.
Lin Weiming opened the door curiously and saw several men and women from the village.
"!!!" Alarm bells rang in Lin Weiming's mind as he looked at them in confusion: "What's going on here?"
The villagers smiled broadly: "Weiming, you're going to the county town today, right?"
Lin Weiming didn't answer, his eyes gradually becoming wary. "Auntie, let's not beat around the bush, shall we?"
Could these people have found out when the results will be released and want to come along with me to watch the excitement?
Lin Weiming also mentally assessed these people's love of watching a spectacle and thought they were actually capable of doing such a thing.
"Oh, it's nothing... It's just that we're short of some needles and thread, and our hoe is mostly broken. We're planning to go to the county to get a new one. I figured you'd have to go to the county town too, so I thought I'd go with you so we could save ourselves some walking."
Several uncles and aunts from the village smiled, but their eyes kept glancing towards the Lin family's study.
They had visited the Lin family's new house when it was built and knew the location of the Lin family's study.
Lin Weiming's lips stiffened slightly.
These people said they were going to buy things, but judging from their eyes, they clearly wanted to come along and watch the excitement!
But Lin Weiming really couldn't refuse. Most of these people were uncles and aunts who had watched him grow up, and they were all very familiar with him.
Even if they wanted to just watch the drama unfold, Lin Weiming could only agree with tears in his eyes.
However, he was quick-witted and came up with a compromise. He said to the uncles and aunts, "Uncle, aunt, look at you, you've wasted most of your time on this round trip, and you've even missed some work in the fields..."
"Why don't you tell me what you want to buy? I'm going to the county town to bring it back for you, so you don't have to go there yourself and waste your time."
February and March are the busiest time for farm work.
There's nothing we can do about it; it concerns our son's future.
But for these people to abandon their work just to watch the excitement is really going too far!
Most importantly, Lin Weiming was a little worried. What if his son didn't pass the exam? If these people went to watch the spectacle, wouldn't that make him a laughing stock?
But these uncles and aunties didn't care about any of that. They came up with all sorts of reasons and excuses, insisting on going with them.
"Sigh, fine, fine." Lin Weiming could only agree helplessly.
The oxcart was faster than a person, and they arrived at the gate of the county town where the results were posted shortly after sunrise.
But the number of people surrounding the notice board was more than the amount of rice in their rice bin!
Whether it was the villagers who wanted to watch the excitement, or Lin Weiming and Lin Zhongyuan themselves, no one could squeeze through.
Lin Weiming felt both troubled and pleased.
The results won't be released on just one day. He could come back tomorrow. He doesn't believe that these uncles and aunties would waste two days just to watch the excitement.
"Ahem..." Lin Weiming said with a troubled expression, "I'm afraid we can't squeeze through like this. Uncle and Aunt, I see you want to buy something, right? How about I take you to buy it first? I won't trouble you here."
"Weiming, thank you for your help all this way. Let's go and see. Zhongyuan is a smart kid; he'll definitely pass the exam!"
The uncles and aunties originally came to watch the excitement, so why would they be scared away by this small crowd?
They immediately rolled up their sleeves and squeezed into the crowd.
They were all used to working in the fields; they looked thin, but they were actually quite strong.
They quickly broke through several layers of encirclement and arrived directly in front of the notice.
"Hey!" However, not many of them could read. After squeezing through with difficulty, one of them shouted, "I think I saw Zhongyuan's name! Wow, he passed the exam! He passed the exam!"
The man excitedly turned around and said to the people behind him.
As a result, he got so excited that he was pushed out by the increasingly excited people next to him.
"Really? What rank did he get? Did you see it?" everyone asked excitedly.
Even Lin Weiming and Lin Zhongyuan perked up their ears and looked at the uncle.
The man's expression froze.
"Um... I was just about to look when I got pushed aside by the people next to me. Didn't you guys squeeze in? Did you see him? Did you see where he was in line?"
The expressions on the faces of those who squeezed into the middle to see were even more interesting than his. They had managed to squeeze in with great difficulty, but they couldn't read!
It was all for nothing.
However, they did not come away empty-handed. Now that they had confirmed that Lin Zhongyuan had passed the exam, it didn't matter what his ranking was.
At least I passed the exam!
