Rong Ning was speechless for a moment; she didn't know what to say.
Whether it was her older sister or her older brother, they all did their own thing to leave her a way out.
She was naturally frigid, that was true, but she couldn't help being moved. She lowered her head, carefully put the things away, and sincerely said, "Thank you, brother!"
The Crown Prince patted her head again, smiling but saying nothing. He truly hoped that Rong Ning could have the ability to protect herself, so that he would have one less weakness.
"Ah Ning... if you leave the palace tomorrow, please see Father Emperor first!" the Crown Prince instructed before leaving.
"knew!"
...
The next day, Rong Ning got up early, but the emperor was holding the morning court and she couldn't see him, so she went to the palace drill ground to stretch her muscles and happened to run into Luo Chuan training the imperial guards.
Luo Chuan took the initiative to greet her. Rong Ning was in a good mood today and didn't pick a fight with him. After looking around, she said, "Interested in sparring with me?"
"If Your Highness is interested, I will certainly accompany you!"
Rong Ning liked his straightforwardness and said loudly, "Then please..."
The morning mist had not yet dissipated, and a thin layer of frost clung to the blue bricks of the drill ground. Rong Ning rolled up her sleeves with her bare hands and drew a longsword from the weapon rack, while Luo Chuan drew a long spear. The imperial guards, who were training, stood in neat rows, but all looked on expectantly, waiting to see a spectacle.
"Your Highness, please forgive me."
Luo Chuan leaped into the air and struck with his palm, Rong Ning spun around and took a step, brushing past the spear shaft with the gale, the tip of her sword aimed straight for his throat.
Luo Chuan twisted his waist and swept his spear horizontally, but she used the spear to spring up, and as her skirt fluttered, she unleashed twelve cloud-piercing kicks, causing the fine iron spear shaft to hum and tremble.
"Impressive footwork!"
A fighting spirit ignited in Luo Chuan's eyes, and the tip of his spear suddenly transformed into a dragon, unleashing seven cold stars. Rong Ning formed a sword with her fingers and actually met the blade head-on with her bare palm. With a crisp clang, frost-like energy spread along the spear shaft towards her tiger's mouth. Luo Chuan roared, shattering the ice crystals, abandoning his spear and switching to his fist. The wind from his fist, carrying sand and stones, rushed straight at his face.
Two figures, bathed in the morning light, leaped onto the watchtower. Rong Ning's longsword suddenly flashed like a silver snake, slashing straight at him. But Rong Ning hooked his toes on the railing, hanging upside down like a golden hook, and deflected the longsword back towards the beam.
";when--";
The longsword was embedded in the beam and could not be pulled out. Rong Ning was not flustered at all. She flipped over and used the momentum to fly behind Luo Chuan. She kicked Luo Chuan in the back and then quickly landed back on the ground, stopping her attack and not planning to fight anymore.
Seeing this, Luo Chuan also landed back on the ground, threw the spear back onto the weapon rack, and said loudly, "I have long heard that Your Highness is highly skilled. Today I have witnessed it firsthand. Your Highness has such skill at such a young age. Given time, I will no longer be worthy to spar with you!"
Rong Ning ignored his flattery. Luo Chuan was her father's confidant, and having served by his side for so many years, he was definitely not a fool. She said calmly, "Alright, stop flattering me. If I can't beat him, I can't beat him. I can afford to lose!"
"Your Majesty is telling the truth!"
Rong Ning took the handkerchief handed to her by A Ying and wiped her sweat. She joked, "Commander Luo, with such skills, why didn't you show them off at my coming-of-age ceremony? If you had made an appearance, wouldn't all those noble sons from aristocratic families have had to step aside?"
"Yesterday was for choosing a consort for His Highness, why should I get involved!"
Upon hearing this, Rong Ning narrowed her eyes. "Oh~ You look down on me that much?"
here we go again!
I'm going to tease him again!
Luo Chuan replied seriously, "This humble subject is just a crude and uncouth warrior. It is this humble subject who is unworthy of Your Highness. This humble subject is ashamed and therefore dares not go on stage to offend Your Highness's eyes!"
Listen to that! Listen to that!
Rong Ning sometimes liked Luo Chuan's meticulous way of speaking and acting, but other times she found it annoying. She glanced at him and said irritably, "Are you really afraid that I will become dependent on you? You can rest assured, you are a pillar of the Emperor, how could I bear to harm you, so there is no need to belittle yourself like this."
"Your Highness is wise!" Luo Chuan said respectfully.
"This is boring!"
Rong Ning rolled her eyes at him, waved for A Ying to bring her horse over, then mounted her horse and went to practice riding and archery. Luo Chuan watched from the side, and couldn't help but admire her riding and archery skills.
Luo Chuan felt that although Rong Ning was not raised in the palace, she was skilled in both literature and martial arts, and most of the men in Nanyang City could not compare to her.
A girl like this, with such a noble status, would be an absolute step up for anyone who becomes her husband.
Rong Ning ran two laps around the training ground and noticed that Luo Chuan was still watching, so she asked, "What? Do you want to compete with me in archery and horsemanship?"
"Your humble servant wouldn't dare!" Luo Chuan replied with a smile.
It's impossible to compete; it would be impolite to win against her again.
He bowed deeply, clasped his hands in a respectful gesture, and withdrew.
After watching him leave, Rong Ning ran a few more laps, and when she saw that it was almost time, she returned to Zhaoqing Palace, tidied herself up, and went to find the Emperor.
The morning court session hadn't ended yet, but it was almost over. Rong Ning didn't have to wait long before the emperor returned, so she was able to freeload a breakfast.
"Judging from your posture, you're about to leave the palace again!"
Rong Ning nodded, "During the time I've been in the palace, the concubines haven't been going out much. I'm afraid if I stay any longer, your beautiful concubines will get moldy from staying cooped up in their own palaces!"
"You're so unserious!" the emperor laughed and scolded, dismissing the servants around him and comfortably enjoying his breakfast.
Nothing serious. Rong Ning didn't want to talk much while eating, so she just ate in silence. After she finished eating, she sat obediently and watched the emperor eat.
Seeing her like this, the emperor knew she had something to say, and it was no small matter. In order not to spoil his appetite, he did not ask directly.
After he finished eating and put down his chopsticks, he leisurely rinsed his mouth before asking, "Speak, what is it?"
Rong Ning sat up straight. "Father, I have chosen a consort!"
