Chapter 69 Adorably Stupid

"Go check the study."

Rong Ning had a bad feeling, but she forced herself to stay calm and gave instructions to A Ying.

After navigating through winding corridors, the group arrived at the prefect's study, where he usually handled official business.

The door was half-open, letting in a faint sliver of light, and there seemed to be a shadowy figure moving about.

Rong Ning pushed open the door and entered, only to find the study in a mess, with books scattered all over the floor, clearly showing signs of being hastily searched.

She looked around, her gaze finally settling on the tightly closed hidden door behind the desk, and she had her answer.

"Chase!"

Rong Ning gave a low shout and rushed towards the hidden door.

Beyond the hidden door was a narrow secret passage leading to an unknown direction. Rong Ning, relying on her extraordinary courage and agility, swiftly traversed the passage.

"We absolutely cannot let him get away!"

At the end of the secret passage, a ray of sunlight pierced through, and the figure of someone could be vaguely seen moving ahead.

Rong Ning quickened her pace and finally burst out of the secret passage, revealing a desolate back mountain. The prefect was running frantically ahead of her.

He wanted to run for his life, feeling that as long as he ran away and no one could find him, these things would be none of his business.

But he was a civil official after all, and his physical strength was lacking. Rong Ning and her men quickly surrounded him.

Rong Ning looked at him with a half-smile and said, "I just came to pay a simple visit to the Prefect, how did I end up in this state?"

The prefect slowly turned around, a complex smile on his face, a smile that held both despair and resentment.

"Your Highness, at a time like this, why say such unimportant things?"

The prefect's voice was hoarse, with a hint of sarcasm, "When you sent Princess Zhaoqing to marry a foreign ruler, you didn't return to Nanyang City immediately. I knew this day would come, but I didn't expect it to be so soon."

"Fast?" Rong Ning sneered. "But when I look at those people and those appalling accounts, I only feel that I am too slow."

"Iwagai Prefecture has been dealt with thoroughly. General Shiro, who worked for you, has confessed to all his crimes and committed suicide out of fear of punishment. You cannot escape, and neither can the people behind you."

"Oh...is that so?"

The prefect laughed heartily, "Your Highness, do you think you can change anything by yourself alone?"

Rong Ning looked at him as he went mad, her eyes blazing. "Prefect, you are wrong, you are all wrong. You all think that I did these things just because I was angry and wanted to seek justice for those soldiers and to prove myself."

So you think I'm stirring up trouble in the North all by myself, but little do you know, what I'm doing is what the people want. People like you will die without a burial place sooner or later.

But you guys... never thought of it.

So adorably stupid…
