Chapter 91 Rebellious Spirit

"Then this servant will send someone to keep a close eye on them."

"Well... but there's really not much we can do in the Ministry of Justice prison. Let's do our best! The prefect is going to die eventually. If someone can't sit still and wants to take action, I can follow the clues and wipe them all out. That would be a fitting end for him."

So how he died was entirely up to fate.

But his family needs to keep a close eye on things. Just because the prefect doesn't say something doesn't mean his family won't.

"Yes, Your Highness, Ah Ying understands!!"

Rong Ning gently placed the ledger in her hand on the table, her eyes revealing a thoughtful expression.

She continued, "Furthermore, it seems that the governor's luxurious mansion in Nanyang City was also thoroughly searched. As far as I know, although the mansion was confiscated, it seems that nothing of real value was found. At least, Father and my elder brother did not mention any important discoveries in their conversation."

She recalled the search of the prefectural governor's mansion in Kangye City, a thorough and meticulous operation.

She personally oversaw the entire process, leaving no corner unchecked, from the study to the secret chamber, from the garden to the cellar. However, despite the enormous amount of manpower and time she invested, she ultimately gained nothing.

No evidence of any dealings between the prefect and officials in Nanyang City could be found.

"This is really abnormal," Rong Ning frowned, her heart filled with doubt.

"As a high-ranking official, and deeply involved in the high-risk business of arms smuggling, how could he possibly have no connections with officials in Nanyang City? That's simply impossible."

She knew all too well that no high-ranking official could be completely isolated in the bureaucracy, especially when it came to such a sensitive and dangerous deal. The prefect's residence and mansion should leave some clues, even the smallest ones, enough to reveal his connection with his accomplices.

However, the reality was unusually clean, so clean that it was unsettling.

"There's always something fishy going on when things seem unusual; the cleaner something is, the more suspicious it is."

Rong Ning muttered to herself, the words echoing in her heart. She believed that behind this unusual cleanliness lay a greater secret.

Aying stood aside, listening to Rong Ning's analysis, and wholeheartedly agreed. All the clues they had gathered seemed to come to an abrupt end when they traced them back to the prefect.

The prefectural governor's office search yielded no new breakthroughs, and they now urgently need to find a new entry point, a new direction, in order to continue their in-depth investigation.

“We need to re-examine all the evidence,” Rong Ning leaned back. “Perhaps we’ve missed some details, or our interpretation of certain information isn’t deep enough. It’s impossible for the prefect to be without flaws; we just haven’t found them yet.”
