Chapter 45 The Forty-Fifth Day of the Beginning [Second Update] "Yanjing Seventh Team"
Day 45 of the story [Second Update]
"I never expected your 'trip' to be so unusual." After everyone had left, He Lianzhou walked to Yin Yu's bedside and said.
This was the first time since they arrived that they had such a long period of time alone together.
Yin Yu glanced at him and said coldly, "But I see you accepted it very smoothly."
It wasn't just smooth sailing; he felt completely at home. He was comfortable communicating with his doctors and teammates without any awkwardness.
He really wanted to pinch He Lianzhou's skin to see how thick it was, whether it was made of city walls.
“Of course, many scientists believe that the universe is diverse and complex, and I think that’s true.” He Lianzhou looked at Yin Yu, leaned back in his chair, and said lazily, “We have never figured out what kind of existence the world we live in really is.”
Yin Yuping raised his eyebrows and scoffed at He Lianzhou's words.
These scientists' research was irrelevant to him. Incredible things happened, but he didn't investigate the reasons for their occurrence. He only cared about what they would cause and what he should do.
He Lianzhou didn't seem to like the topic either. He fiddled with the things that Yin Yu's men had brought, and then changed the subject, saying, "Speaking of which, I didn't expect you to be a fire brigade captain here."
“But it doesn’t seem too surprising.” He Lianzhou quickly added, then said in a tone that Yin Yu didn’t like, “After all, noble character and a lofty spirit of selflessly saving lives, this profession suits you very well.”
Yin Yu looked away.
If that's the case, then it should be his past profession that shaped him, not his current profession that suits him.
Seeing that Yin Yu didn't speak, He Lianzhou raised an eyebrow: "What's wrong? Seventh Team of Guanshan Special Zone, you started to get distracted after hearing this. Is that a place you used to work in?"
He Lianzhou said in a low voice, with a hint of coaxing, "You want to go to that place, you want to be with your team, right?"
Yin Yu said coldly, "No, I know they can handle it. They don't need me there."
“But you haven’t answered my question yet. Do you want to or not? It’s not about whether they need you or not.” He Lianzhou smiled.
Yin Yu gave He Lianzhou a cold look. He hated that this man always had such a confident look on his face, as if he could see right through him.
"Let's escape," He Lianzhou said with a smile, revealing his true intention.
Yin Yu scoffed, but still glanced outside the ward.
He did intend to go out, but not for this reason.
At 11 p.m., Yin Yu finished all the IV infusions. With the data records for several hours remaining very stable and good, the monitoring equipment was removed.
This was a great opportunity, and Yin Yu certainly seized it.
After he and He Lianzhou ran out of the hospital, Yin Yu suddenly realized how much the outside world had changed.
The buildings that collapsed in the aftershocks still remain ruins, with only a little-used cordon around them. The original high-rises are broken in two, with one end of the spire running into another building. The area around the hospital is covered with sheds to house patients with minor injuries.
At 11 or 12 o'clock at night, Yanjing is usually a bustling and brightly lit place, but now, apart from the lights on the rooftops of the streets near the hospital, which are as bright as day, the other streets are as quiet as a dead place.
It seems like everyone has disappeared.
Yin Yu's breath hitched slightly; he hadn't expected things to be like this outside.
When he fell into a coma and passed away, everything had just begun, and Yanjing still retained its original appearance.
What drastically changed this city was the lingering effects of the disaster. Aftershocks and the collapse of related infrastructure were like a broken pearl necklace, crackling and breaking, leaving the city vulnerable.
Yin Yu took a deep breath, strode forward, and walked quickly towards a care hospital two streets away, which had been temporarily requisitioned as a resettlement point. According to Xue Ping, his mother was currently being housed there.
Two streets away, the only bright spot was Yin Yu's destination.
“I’m looking for Ms. Yin Rong,” Yin Yu said to the volunteers at the scene. “She is a mental patient, a high-risk individual, and should be identified separately.”
He was wearing the clothes that Qian Yingduo had given him. It was a set of regular clothes that he kept in the fire station's wardrobe. In Qian Yingduo's words, it was more comfortable to wear his own clothes and he would recover faster. He felt bad whenever he saw the blue and white striped clothes in the hospital.
Upon seeing this, the volunteer checked the information and quickly gave Yin Yu the exact location.
Yin Yu's heart raced slightly, and he thanked him.
Yin Rong still had her own room, a very small space with only a simple wooden single bed, a quilt, and a spittoon in the corner. Other than that, there was nothing.
Yin Yu kept He Lianzhou outside the door; the distance was definitely less than twenty meters, so it was very safe.
He closed the door, and Yin Rong curled up in the corner, her forehead pressed against the moldy wall, as if talking to herself.
Yin Yu's heart skipped a beat upon seeing this: "Mom."
Yin Rong did not react, as if she had not heard.
Yin Yu walked up to Yin Rong and carefully touched his mother, afraid of disturbing her: "Mom, it's me. I've come to see you."
Yin Rong slowly raised her face. Her eyes were sunken, and her cheekbones were so prominent from being so thin that she looked quite emaciated.
Before he entered the house, the volunteers told him that his mother had not eaten for two days and had only drunk a little water. They planned to force-feed her nutritional supplements and protein if the situation remained the same tomorrow.
Yin Yu hadn't expected Yin Rong to undergo such a dramatic change in just a few days. The last time he saw her at the stadium, she was still able to communicate and hadn't become this thin.
He didn't know if it was because he was forcibly taken away for treatment in front of Yin Rong that her condition suddenly worsened.
Yin Yu carefully brushed aside Yin Rong's matted hair, revealing her eyes so that he could clearly see his own small reflection in his mother's eyes.
However, Yin Rong still didn't speak. Her body was swaying back and forth unconsciously, and her lips were moving constantly, as if she was saying something, but you couldn't hear anything.
Seeing this, Yin Yu didn't say anything more. He simply put the device he had brought back on Yin Rong's wrist. The device seemed to dissolve into Yin Rong's skin and quickly became completely invisible.
But Yin Yu heard the system notification in his mind.
"Negative status freeze device activated. Current remaining usage time: 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds."
Current user evaluation status:
Spirit: Red Alert
Body: Yellow Alert
Survival time: Yellow alert
"Recommended treatment: Negative state freezing device combined with chronic mental relaxation agent to improve the user's mental environment. Deep treatment can be carried out after the mental state turns to yellow alert."
Hearing the reminder in his mind, Yin Yu paused slightly, then looked at Yin Rong with almost joyful surprise. This meant that he could not only delay his mother's death, but perhaps even cure her completely! Completely?!
When he realized this, the image that came to his mind was of him, his mother, and his father in their yard. They had built a grapevine and finally managed to grow two bunches of grapes. One bunch was pecked by a bird, which angered his father so much that he made a small cage to protect the last few grapes. His mother stood aside, smiling and handing him tools, while looking at online tutorials and asking him to lend a hand.
That was the last day of his leave before he enlisted in the army, and it was also the last time the three of them were together.
Yin Yu sometimes felt it was unreal. One day, he suddenly received a notice from his class monitor telling him that he had to go home and that his father was missing and his mother was not doing well. He thought it was a prank. Just two days ago, they were talking on the phone. He knew they had gone on a trip and that they had gone to the beach. He could even hear the sound of the waves in the background.
He thought it was a shipwreck, but the truth was that no one knew what had happened, because the only person who knew what had happened was his mother, who had gone insane.
Yin Yu was unaware of how long he had been lost in thought, only to hear a very faint shout.
"Yuyu? You're here? Are you alright?"
Yin Yu suddenly came to his senses and looked over, only to see Yin Rong slowly reach out and stroke Yin Yu's face, stroking the stitches on his forehead, just like any normal mother would do.
Yin Yu had waited for this for far too long, so long that his eyes almost welled up with tears.
He lowered his voice: "Mom, you look so much better."
He was speaking, but before he could finish, he was interrupted by a series of heavy gasps and a low growl. He heard Yin Rong grab his arm and shout, "Run! Run! It's dangerous! It's collapsed! It's all collapsed!"
"A really loud sound! Yu Yu, run! Run faster! You have to get out of here! Don't look back! You absolutely can't look back! There's a huge, huge hole!"
Seeing this, Yin Yu quickly comforted Yin Rong: "It's okay, it's okay, I didn't fall down. I was on the edge of the cave. I found you later, and we're alright now."
"No, no!" Yin Rong shook her head violently in terror, her yellowish eyes staring at Yin Yu with despair and fear. "We're all going to fall in! Don't you understand? We're all going to fall in! Run! Run!"
She screamed almost at the top of her lungs, so much so that the volunteers and caregivers outside rushed in, and Yin Yu was pulled away once again.
He walked weakly to the door and slowly slid down onto the porch.
He Lianzhou walked over to him, looked at him quietly, and sat down beside him.
"Is that your mother?" he asked after a long silence.
Yin Yu nodded slowly after a few seconds.
"I heard what she said, that was it."
Yin Yu interrupted He Lianzhou, lowered his head and pinched the bridge of his nose, and said in a low voice, "That was an aftershock. There was a sinkhole at the temporary site where she was, and a very deep pit appeared where she was originally standing."
“But luckily, she was taken away, but I didn’t know that. At that time, I thought she was down there. I almost…” Yin Yu paused. He didn’t speak again. After a long time, he took a deep breath and continued, “So much so that when I saw her again, I couldn’t control my emotions and physical condition. I fainted and then went to the hospital.”
“I was taken away right in front of her, my fate unknown. I think that’s what triggered her. That must be it,” Yin Yu murmured softly.
He Lianzhou looked at him, his brows furrowing slightly, but from what the woman said, he felt that she wasn't referring to the earthquake.
"Let's go back." Yin Yu stood up, glanced at He Lianzhou, paused, and said, "Tonight..."
“It’s a secret between the two of us, I understand.” He Lianzhou blinked. “Sharing a secret is the key to an intimate relationship.”
Yin Yu chuckled: "This is no secret, and I never intended to hide anything. I just want to say that what I needed to do tonight has been done, and I don't want to get caught by the nurses."
He Lianzhou paused.
This person really doesn't play by the rules.
He had no choice but to follow Yin Yu back towards the hospital: "I didn't realize you were still such a patient who listened to doctors' orders."
Yin Yu gave a noncommittal hum. He just didn't want to cause trouble. He could imagine how suffocating he would be if the nurses noticed that he had slipped out of the hospital and told Cui Lu and the other members of Team Seven about it.
So he preferred to obediently return to the hospital.
At this time, Yin Yu and He Lianzhou could only enter through the hospital's emergency room entrance.
The hospital was quiet. Just as the two were about to cross the emergency room to the inpatient ward, they suddenly heard a series of hurried footsteps in the corridor. Doctors and nurses rushed out, calling to each other.
"Get the neurosurgery team ready; the ambulance will arrive in five minutes!"
"All available doctors and nurses are on standby. The injured are being transferred from the 307 Expressway breeding base. Firefighters and police officers are among the injured."
“”
Yin Yu stopped abruptly and looked at the team of doctors and nurses waiting at the entrance of the emergency room.
He instinctively held his breath. Soon, a bright red fire truck approached from outside, followed by an ambulance. Stretchers were unloaded from both vehicles, and several people with minor injuries jumped out of the vehicles themselves.
Yin Yu quickly scanned the person on the stretcher; it wasn't one of his teammates, nor anyone he knew.
But soon, he heard a surprised shout: "Captain Yin?!"
He looked over and saw a young man with a bleeding ankle wrapped tightly in gauze walk over in a few steps. The young man's eyes widened in surprise and delight: "Captain Yin! What are you doing here!?"
"Lin Xu? You were on this mission?" Yin Yu recognized him as one of his former teammates from Guanshan. He unconsciously held his breath, his gaze falling on the young man's injuries. "What happened?"
Lin Xu was about to speak when he suddenly stopped: "Captain Yin, um, I can't say."
He glanced again at the strange man who was always by Yin Yu's side. If it were just Yin Yu alone, he would have said it quietly, but there were too many ordinary people here.
Yin Yu paused for a moment: "Yes, I'm no longer there regarding Guanshan's rules."
"Team Leader Yin," Lin Xu opened his mouth hesitantly.
"Go get it bandaged up quickly." Yin Yu didn't say anything more.
"I'm fine! Those firefighters were the ones who were seriously injured," Lin Xu said, shaking his head. Suddenly remembering something, he paused for two seconds and looked at Yin Yu, "Captain Yin, did you switch to firefighting?"
Yin Yu nodded: "My team went to support the 307 breeding base, but the people they sent were not them."
Lin Xu's expression changed slightly upon hearing this.
Seeing this, Yin Yu's heart, which had just been at ease, immediately tightened again. He looked at Lin Xu and asked, "Are there still people on the 307 Expressway?"
“Yanjing Team Seven, they were the first team to arrive at the scene to respond, but they have gone missing and we can’t contact them.” Lin Xu looked at Yin Yu.
